Vasily Nikolayevich Karasev (Russian:Василий Николаевич Карасев; born April 14, 1971) is a Russian former professionalbasketball player andcoach. He was most recently thehead coach ofZenit Saint Petersburg.
For several years, Karasev was the startingpoint guard of theRussian League clubCSKA Moscow, in theEuroLeague. He also ledCSKA to the1996 EuroLeague Final Four, where he was named to theEuroLeague All-Final Four Team. He was selected to theFIBA EuroStars team in the years 1997, 1998, and 1999. He is widely considered to have been one of the best European point guards of the 1990s.
Karasev was the starting point guard of the senior men'sRussian national basketball team, between 1993 and 2003. With Russia's senior national team, Karasev won twoEuroBasket medals, the silver medal at theEuroBasket 1993 and the bronze medal at theEuroBasket 1997. He also won twoFIBA World Cup silver medals, one at the1994 FIBA World Championship, and one at the1998 FIBA World Championship.
At the1998 FIBA World Championship, he was selected to theAll-Tournament Team.
After he retired from playing professional basketball, Karasev began working as abasketball coach. He became thehead coach ofTriumph Lyubertsy (later renamed toZenit St. Petersburg), in 2012.
Vasily is the father ofSergey Karasev. Sergey has been a seniorRussian national basketball team player, and has played with the pro clubsTriumph Lyubertsy,Canton Charge,Cleveland Cavaliers andBrooklyn Nets (NBA), andZenit Saint Petersburg.
