Vamlingbo is a populated area, asocken (not to be confused withparish), on the Swedish island ofGotland.[2] It comprises the same area as theadministrative Vamlingbo District, established on 1 January 2016.[3]
Vamlingbo is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding themedievalVamlingbo Church,[4] sometimes referred to asVamlingbo kyrkby. Vamlingbo is situated on the south tip of Gotland.[5]
As of 2019[update], Vamlingbo Church belongs to Hoburgparish in Sudretspastorat, along with the churches inÖja,Hamra,Sundre andFide.[6][7]
Two of theasteroids in theAsteroid belt,9372 Vamlingbo and10105 Holmhällar, arenamed after this socken and the stack area.[8][9]
Holmhällar is a beach and arauk area along the Vamlingbo south coast, right across fromHeligholmen island. At Holmhällar is the Holmfishing village with stone fishing huts that are several hundred years old. Adjacent to the stack area are the beaches of Skvalpvik and Austre.[10][11] The coastline is also a 6 ha (15 acres)nature reserve formed in 2008.[12]
Some of the most iconicViking jewelry on Gotland has been found at Vamlingbo. Many of these discoveries are fashioned from gold.[13]
Vamlingbo has attracted several companies and industries.[14] The most noted is the textile company, Vamlingbolaget, founded in 1983[15] in the tradition of Swedish design collective "Mah-Jong", a noted brand during the 1960s and 1970s.[16]
The Holmhällar pension is south of Vamlingbo right on the sandy beach.[17]
