Valevåg is a village inSveio municipality inVestland county,Norway. The village is located on the northern end of the Sveiopeninsula, along the southern shore of theHardangerfjorden. Historically, Valevåg was theadministrative centre of the old municipality ofValestrand until it was merged into Sveio in 1964.Valen Chapel (built in 1707) is in the village of Valevåg, and just outside the village to the south is the much largerValestrand Church (built in 1873).[2]
The village lies on theEuropean route E39 highway, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north of the village ofFørde. The village was once a major ferry port connecting the mainland of Sveio to the island municipalities ofStord (to the north via theSkjersholmane–Valevåg Ferry) and toBømlo (to the west via theMosterhamn–Valevåg Ferry). The ferrys are no longer in operation since the opening of theTriangle Link bridge/tunnel network. TheBømlafjord Tunnel runs directly beneath the village before going under the fjord to the nearby islands.[citation needed]
