Valdemārpils (pronunciationⓘ;German:Saßmacken,Yiddish:שאַסמאַקען,romanized: Shasmaken) (calledSasmaka until 1926) is atown in theCourland region ofLatvia, inTalsi Municipality. The town is named afterKrišjānis Valdemārs, born in nearbyValdgale parish (then part of Ārlava parish), who was one of the leaders ofthe First Latvian National Awakening.[3] He is celebrated in the town with a memorial stone. Famous Jewish bibliographer and book collectorEphraim Deinard was born here in 1846.
