V518 Carinae (HR 4196) is anaked eyevariable star in theconstellationCarina. It is a member of the brightopen clusterIC 2602 near theCarina Nebula.

Location

[edit]

V518 Carinae lies in theopen clusterIC 2602, 5arc minutes from its brightest memberθ Carinae.

Variability

[edit]
Alight curve for V518 Carinae, plotted fromHipparcos data[10]

V518 Carinae was discovered to change in brightness after analysis ofHipparcos photometry.[11] The amplitude of the variations seen is 0.2magnitudes, with possible periods of 100 and 971 days.[12] It is classified as aγ Cassiopeiae variable.[13][4]

Spectral peculiarities

[edit]

V518 Carinae is classified as a B-typemain sequence star between B3 and B5.[14] It is also catalogued as ahelium star, achemically peculiar star with abnormally strongheliumabsorption lines in its spectrum and relatively weakhydrogen lines. It is possibly ablue straggler.[15]

V518 Carinae is also aBe star, a hot star withemission lines in its spectrum due to a disk of material around the star. Be stars that show irregular brightness changes due to the disk are grouped as γ Cassiopeiae variables. V518 Carinae is known to produce disk outbursts lasting several hundred days.[16]
