Uzbekistan first participated at theOlympic Games as an independent nation in 1994, and has sent athletes to compete in every Games since then. Previously,Uzbek athletes competed as part of theSoviet Union at the Olympics from 1952 to 1988, and after thedissolution of the Soviet Union , Uzbekistan was part of theUnified Team in 1992.
At the1996 Summer Olympics inAtlanta ,Armen Bagdasarov earned the distinction of becoming the first athlete to win an Olympic medal for independent Uzbekistan, claiming silver in themen's judo middleweight division . Four years later, at the2000 Summer Olympics inSydney ,Muhammad Abdullaev made history as the first Uzbek athlete to win Olympic gold, triumphing in themen’s light-welterweight boxing event . In the Winter Games, Uzbekistan debuted at the1994 Olympic Winter Games inLillehammer . During those Games,Lina Cheryazova captured gold in thewomen's freestyle skiing aerials , becoming both Uzbekistan’s first Winter Olympic medalist and the country’s first Olympic champion overall.[ 1]
At the2024 Paris Olympics , Uzbekistan achieved its most successful performance in history, securing a total of 13 medals: 8 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze, and finishing13th overall among 206 participating countries. The nation dominated in men’sboxing , winning five gold medals, whilejudo ,taekwondo , andfreestyle wrestling also contributed significantly—includingDiyora Keldiyorova making history as the first Uzbek woman to win Olympic gold at the Summer Games, triumphing inwomen's half lightweight judo event .[ 2]
Uzbek athletes have won a total of forty nine medals at theSummer Olympic Games , mostly in wrestling, boxing and judo. The nation has also won a single medal at theWinter Olympic Games . TheNational Olympic Committee for Uzbekistan,National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan , was created in 1992 and recognized by theInternational Olympic Committee in 1993.
