Xkcd and the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

[edit]

(I apologize. I let this message get really long. Tldr ShouldThe Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald even have an “In Popular Culture Section” to begin with?)

Vigilantcosmicpenguin,Thank you for your edits onThe Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Most of them were reasonable and significantly streamlined the article.

However, I have mixed feelings on the removal of Xkcd from the “In Popular Culture” section. For one, the reference not removed was rather obscure - when I search for the parody, there are few secondary sources on it. In fact, the album it is one does not have a page on the wiki. Additionally, I do not totally agree with your appraisal ofXkcd as obscure - there are many secondary sources on it, and Wikipedia itself has multiple articles covering it.

However, I somewhat agree with your removal of Xkcd on different grounds. Due to the vast subject matter of the web comic, its frequent direct mention of Wikipedia, and its shared computer-literate audience with many amateur Wikipedia editors (including myself), it can cause problems with article quality (seeWikipedia:Xkcd in popular culture for a more in-depth explanation of the problem and why I might agree with your removal).

At the same time, the article’s “In Popular Culture” section is very short. This leaves me with two possible conclusions for what would result in the best article.

The first would be to return the Xkcd mention. I feel that due to the short “In Popular Culture” section and the overall relatively brief length of the article, returning the reference would not hurt the article. If this were another article (of which plenty of examples are provided in that article I linked), I would say no, but in this case, the song itself is a part of popular culture and has few other examples, running little risk of an “In Popular Culture Section” getting too long and making the article convoluted.

The second, and perhaps more reasonable solution, is to wonder whether the article even needs an “In Popular Culture Section” in the first place. The other reference is very obscure, and from what I can tell, most other articles on major (a.k.a #1 charting or otherwise notable) singles (e.gDancing Queen,Indiana Wants Me) even have this section or anything similar except for very good reasons; the closest I can find is the “Legacy” section inNever Gonna Give You Up, which itself is just a brief overview of Rickrolling that links to the dedicated article. As much as I love Xkcd personally and would love to have both references, I’m not sure there’s a reason for the article on “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” to have an “In Popular Culture” section at all.

Anyhow, thank you for your time. I apologize for this long-winded message. I just felt I should err on the side of etiquette and discuss this with you, as I didn’t feel it would be right for me to romp straight over your edits without a word.

Have a wonderful evening.

Respectfully,DexcubeDexcube (talk)01:45, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think you're right that the song parody isn't notable. If I were you, I would go ahead andWP:BOLDly remove that from the article. When I was editing the article, I didn't check the source for that claim; I just saw The Washington Post (clearly reliable) and didn't bother looking any further. Now that I read the article, I see that it barely even mentions the song, so it's definitely not relevant to the article.
As for the XKCD comic, I think it was clearly not notable because there was no secondary source cited. It failsWP:IPCV—any "in popular culture" information should be verified by a source that establishes notability. (Which also applies to the song parody, in this case, because it was only mentioned in passing.)
And don't worry about the long message. I'm also prone to writing way too much sometimes. Though I would suggest discussing this on the article's talk page rather than mine, for future reference.

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

[edit]

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be foundhere. If you have not yet signed up, you canadd your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to theWikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implementedseveral changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receivetournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are:Cwmhiraeth (talk ·contribs ·email),Epicgenius (talk ·contribs ·email),Frostly (talk ·contribs ·email),Guerillero (talk ·contribs ·email) andLee Vilenski (talk ·contribs ·email). WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receivetournament points at the end of each round. Unlike theround points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seenhere. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it onWikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome onWikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Hi! I noticed you’ve cleaned up the article, which seems fine. You’ve also removed quite a bit of information — including some details that help establish notability, like collaborations with other notable science communicators. Was this intentional or was this an oversight?

Cheers,Nux(talk)15:55, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the statement about her collabs because it was unsourced; the article body did not mention the fact. I plan on expanding this article with better sourcing, so I might add this information back if I find sources for it. I think you're right that Cowern's collabs are a significant part of her notability, so it's likely that they are covered in reliable sources.— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)19:32, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I madesome edits to the top paragraph. Then I noticed that you were working on thearticle in your sandbox. I've spent some time in Niamey. I'd love to help you improve the article but I won't touch your sandbox unless you let me know if you'd like to collaborate. Hi, I'm glad to see this message! I'd be happy to collaborate on this article; feel free to make changes to my sandbox. Since I only have some knowledge of French, I might send you some French sources if that's okay with you. Besides that, my draft could use copyediting, and, since you're familiar with Niamey, you could do a sanity check to make sure there's nothing completely false.
PS: I'm working on this article as part of

Thanks - those ideas all take advantage of my skills and interests. I'm also happy to translate any French sources! If you feel like my contributions are significant enough to merit, please list me as a collaborator atWP:The Core Contest. When you reply to me here, would you please {{ping}} me? -tucoxn\talk18:33, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There is a nice graph of the temperature in Niamey atSemi-arid climate#Hot semi-arid, in case you want to add that to the article. -tucoxn\talk13:36, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nice catch; I wouldn't have noticed that graph myself. I think it's that's a good visual for the climate section.
Also: do you think you could try finding a map of the quartiers of Niamey? I can finda source that lists the quartiers, but I can't find a map, which would be a useful visual.— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)19:07, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Tucoxn: forgot to ping sorry— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)22:14, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the source showing the list of 90 quartiers. I'm not certain any online map is going to show all 90 of them. Probably quartiers that are divided (i.e., Bobiel, Bobiel II, Bobiel III) will often (not always) show as one quartier on maps. Furthermore, I'm not sure any of these maps are open source:Gifex map, Carte 1 in thisarticle, Figure 1 in thisarticle, Carte 1 in thisarticle, Figure 2 in thisarticle, and finally Carte 3.2 in thismess. Hope these are helpful! -tucoxn\talk16:54, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think you're right that there's no map with all of the quarters, but it was worth a shot. Seems that quarters are added or divided often enough that the best maps online are outdated. Guess I'll have to leave the map out of the article; bit disappointing when information isn't available.— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)21:48, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would recommend theGifex map. It's the newest and clearest of the bunch. While the boundaries of neighborhoods change and new neighborhoods are added, I would suggest including a map of the quartiers because it's illustrative and useful. There is a map of the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh atPittsburgh#Cityscape but there's no map of the neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. at eitherWashington, D.C.#Geography orGeography of Washington, D.C.. In Africa, I am finding relatively few neighborhood maps in Wikipedia articles --Dakar,Maputo#Administrative subdivisions,Cairo#Metropolitan area and districts, andMonrovia#Neighborhoods are some exceptions. Unfortunately, searching GA capitol cities in Africa also doesn't provide much guidance:Bangui#Geography and climate has a neighborhood map butFez, Morocco does not. -tucoxn\talk11:58, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good point that a map would be useful. I'll add a map of neighbourhoods, and then I can update it in the future if an updated source is available. I'll probably base it off of the map you found from Gifex (which appears to be copied fromthis 2014 map from ReliefWeb, which is reliable).
As for the terminology of the quartiers, I think you're right, I'll change it to "quartiers".— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)19:14, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would also recommend using "neighbourhoods" or "quartiers" (as used inBamako#Communes and neighborhoods) to describe these urban entities, as opposed to "quarters." -tucoxn\talk12:13, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Tucoxn: My sandbox draft is very close to being complete. It'd be great if you could give it a final readthrough and point out any issues before I move it to mainspace. Thanks for your help so far!— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)06:29, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receivetournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

In addition, we would like to recognizeGeneralissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.

The full scores for round 2 can be seenhere. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. The 2025 Core Contest Winners!

[edit]

The winners of the 2025Core Contest are announced 🎉. An great turnout with a impressive variety of articles and laudable improvements. The judges (Aza24,Femke andCasliber) would like to thank everybody who joined and congratulate the winners.

  • First place (and a prize of £120) goes toPhlsph7 (talk ·contribs) for his systemic overhaul of thePolitical Philosophy article. What was once an unwieldy entry—dominated by a sprawling history section of nearly three dozen subsections!—is now an accessible and well-structured survey of a complex and often polarizing subject. We particularly commend Phlsph7’s global, inclusive, and comprehensive approach. He has once again demonstrated exceptional skill in handling core topics with clarity and balance.
  • Second place (and a prize of £100) goes toDracophyllum (talk ·contribs) for their outstanding work on bothTrunk andFlower. The former was reimagined from a ~200 word stub into a richly detailed and impeccably sourced overview—an effort truly worthy ofits dedicatee, the late and much-missedVami IV. Meanwhile, their improvements to the Flower article transformed an already strong entry into an exceptional one, now well on its way topassing FAC.
  • Third place (and a prize of £80) goes toVigilantcosmicpenguin (talk ·contribs) for his major development of theNiamey article. The entry now proudly stands among the finest city articles on Wikipedia—from thirty scattered references to nearly 400 high-quality academic sources. We particularly commend his inclusion of numerous French-language sources and thoughtfully comprehensive approach to the topic.

Barnstar

Hello Vigilantcosmicpenguin,

I've noticed how often people receive Barnstars for their contributions, and I truly admire the culture of appreciation in this community.

I've been trying to give back too — supporting other editors, improving pages, participating in discussions — and I try to contribute with care and passion.

It may sound a bit emotional, but I would truly appreciate a Barnstar, if you ever felt that I deserved one. Even a small recognition means a lot to me — it helps me stay motivated and feel like I belong in this big and awesome community.

Thank you for your time, and thank you for everything you do here!

WikiCup 2025 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 29 August. The penultimate round saw three contestants score more than 800 points:

Everyone who competed in Round 4 will advance to Round 5 unless they have withdrawn. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far, while the full scores for Round 4 can be seenhere. During this round, contestants have claimed 9 featured articles, 12featured lists, 98 good articles, 9good topic articles, more than 150 reviews, nearly 100 did you know articles, and 18 in the news articles.

In advance of the fifth and final round, the judges would like to thank every contestant for their hard work. As a reminder, any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed in Round 5. In addition, note that Round 5 will end on 31 October at 23:59 UTC. Awards at the end of Round 5 will be distributed based on who has the most tournament points over all five rounds, and special awards will be distributed based on high performance in particular areas of content creation (e.g., most featured articles in a single round).

Questions are welcome onWikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges –Cwmhiraeth (talk ·contribs),Epicgenius (talk ·contribs),Frostly (talk ·contribs),Guerillero (talk ·contribs) andLee Vilenski (talk ·contribs) – are reachable on their talk pages. İmage issue

[edit]

Hello, your articles about abortion has received quality article status. Congratulations, but why are there no representative images? For the richness of the article, it should at least be enriched with relevant images, right? Thank you.88.236.103.126 (talk)11:27, 31 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your interest in my articles! The point about images has come up a few times in Good Article reviews, but I simply cannot find images that are relevant to most of these articles. I thinkAbortion in Morocco,Abortion in Senegal,Abortion in Madagascar, andAbortion in Africa are the only ones where I could find images relevant to the text. If you can find free images related to abortion in other countries, or have other suggestions for images to add, let me know!— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)19:31, 31 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your Biringan GA review seems very positive

[edit]

I noticed that you were reviewingBiringan for GA status.

In my opinion, it should be at the very least put on hold. The grammar is poor, and the sources are sparse, blog-style, and not very reliable. What made you pass those two points?OmegaAOL (talk)08:35, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging@TheNuggeteer to make him aware of your comments. I agree that the grammar has flaws (and TheNuggeteer has received comments about this in the past), but the GA criteria explicitly state that it's okay to have a few grammar mistakes. As for the sourcing, you are correct; a few unreliable sources were already removed during the review, but I think there is only one unreliable source remaining (the journal listed on ResearchGate). Vital Signs 2026

[edit]

Hello there!

First of all, thanks for your series of abortion articles. Really important to have great articles in that space. I was wondering if you'd like to help out with theWikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Vital Signs 2026 campaign. The goal is to get all top-importance articles of WikiProject Medicine to B-class or above. Many of these highly-read articles are dreadfully out of date, meaning we're doing a disservice to our readers. In the campaign, the plan is to check all articles (including those now assessed at B or higher), and get them up-to-date and understandable to a wide audience. Will you join in, perhaps to address the maintenance templates in the mainabortion article and make sure the rest of the text is still accurate and devoid of systemic bias?

—Femke 🐦 (talk)08:32, 16 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Best of luck on this project, but I don't think I'll want to work on this. The topic of abortion would be beyond my subject area—I've written about the social/legal/political aspects of abortion, but I'm not familiar with writing about medical topics, plus I'm not used to working on broad topics like this. But if members of the project choose to work on the abortion article, I'd be happy to provide some input on the information about social factors while others handle the medical information.— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)02:49, 17 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's fair, yes. The social sections are the one I always struggle with. I always feel a bit of an imposter translating social science papers in medical articles (and it's why my work on endometriosis has stalled a bit). So even contributing just a single section or with suggestions is very welcome! No worries at all if not.—Femke 🐦 (talk)15:39, 20 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Seasons Greetings

[edit]
Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours.Buster Seven Talk (UTC)15:47, 19 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!

[edit]

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be foundhere. If you have not yet signed up, you canadd your name here, and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to theWikiCup talk page.

For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receivetournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.

I also found a newspaper article (Indy Star 10/19/2018) that discusses Hoosier cabinets and mentions Sneath, but am having trouble accessing it. With my real world job, I am responsible for several large data sets. I typically look for any data points that may be questioned, and research the answer to the question before it is asked -- it makes me look smarter when I already have the answer to questions. I tend to do that with Wikipedia too. Don't worry, it is good for me to work with someone with a way different background. I will try to finish things up tomorrow (providing we have electricity) to everyone's satisfaction.TwoScars (talk)01:29, 26 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Panipuri Red Links

[edit]

Thanks for sharing that policy on red links in your edit summary, I did not know of that policy. However, I am thinking that still, according to that policy, some links could still be removed. For example: do readers really need a red link for "Indian street foods" or "street food of Delhi"? It is not jargon or a technical term, so I don't see why it needs a link to a page that does not exist.Oraclesto (talk)14:52, 23 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Even if a term is not a technical term, there is still more context that readers may want to know. What matters is that an article could exist to provide more context, andIndian street food andStreet food of Delhi are both notable topics (they easily pass GNG, by a lot). These links can also be useful if someone creates a redirect. (For example, it would maybe make sense to redirectStreet food of Delhi toDelhi#Food, which very briefly mentions the subject.)— Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk |contribs)18:09, 23 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Vigilantcosmicpenguin:

This month, February 2026,WikiProject Women in Green is participating in theFebruary 2026 GAN Backlog Drive, in which we're aiming to review as many outstanding Good Article (GA) nominations about women and women's works as possible. If you want to help out, you can check out theproject talk page for a list of nominations in need of review (including some WiG originals). If you haven't reviewed a GA nomination before, be sure to check out thereviewing instructions andguidelines and feel free to ask for amentor to check your work.

We are also working together with a wikithon hosted on 5 February by Wikimedia UK, which will focus on writing and improving articles about women involved in sustainable development. If you want to join the event, feel free tosign up at the eventbrite page; or if you would be interested in providing a 20-minute assessment and/or a full GA review of the submitted articles in the weeks following, put your name down on theproject talk page for updates as the event progresses.

We hope to see you there!
