WP:ERRORS

[edit]

Hello! I reverted you onT:ITN. The use of "COP28" was explicitly discussed and not opposedat ITNC,so if you'd like to see that changed please feel free to start a new discussion atWP:ERRORS so I've just started a discussion about it onWP:ERRORS.Ed [talk] [OMT]20:38, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've just reverted back to your original, to let Errors decide.WP:BOLDLEAD is an article guideline to include the article name in bold near the start, not sure why you're using that to justify the removal of the specific 'The' rather than the general article?Stephen21:05, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for not being clear enough there. I've linked that because none of the examples have "the" bolded, and I've not seen a good reason or consensus for why ITN would differ from all our articles.Ed [talk] [OMT]21:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Because there's a difference between theUnited Nations Climate Change conference andthe United Nations Climate Change Conference that ran this year. The examples wouldn't have "the" bolded because the guideline is about including the article name in bold in the lead of an article. ITN is not an article.Stephen21:32, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, ITN is not an article. What I don't understand is why it would choose to differ from our article guidelines. We wouldn't typically bold or link "the" in either circumstance there, especiallywhen the context is clear.Ed [talk] [OMT]05:15, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ARBPIA ITN question

[edit]

Does ARBPIA apply to ITN? i.e., is that IP comment qualified to be considered in determining consensus? Or does "broadly construed" mean non-ECs can't even vote in I-P ITN nominations? I noticed you removed my SPA note but I'm still wondering if as an IP it's still supposed to be struck.JM (talk)20:05, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it applies site wide as far as I can tell.Stephen20:09, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, there's an IP who has now made 6 edits to that nomination, including two separate votes, both left unsigned. I've left the notice on their talk page and pointed out their edits but both votes are still up, I've already reverted them and I don't think I'm allowed to do so more than I have. What do to?JM (talk)23:50, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JOBTITLES

[edit]

Morning, hope you're well.

President of Chile andPrime Minister of Pakistan are proper name job titles, so should be capitalised accordingly. This was raised atWP:ERRORS as it creates a weird inconsistency when we also havePresident of Ecuador on the same template. I don't see that the former part is relevant, it's still a named job title. Please could you self-revert, as I was responding to a specific point raised at ERRORS and we should present a consistent approach to readers. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk)10:54, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Protection of ITN doc page

[edit]

Hey Stephen, I noticed there's anedit request to theITN template doc page. You had protected it two years ago saying that there'sNo reason for non-admins to edit the ITN template documentation. Given that therehas been vandalism in the past, but still a need to edit it, wouldn't it be sensible to lower the protection to be autoconfirmed?SWinxy (talk)23:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The one edit request in two years has been handled.Stephen01:39, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was here to comment similarly. Perhapsextended confirmed would be sufficient. In the spirit of openess, I can imagine someone that might be inclined to tweak just wouldn't bother if they had to format an edit request. —Bagumba (talk)09:05, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

News: Iranian embassy vs consulate

[edit]

Hi Stephen, re. your change here[1], I'd ask you to read the lengthy discussions atTalk:Israeli_bombing_of_the_Iranian_embassy_in_Damascus. In short, there's no consensus to use the term "consulate", in fact there're strong arguments that the premises werenot a consulate (not on an official list of consulates, not a separate compound, questions re. sourcing, etc.). Therefore, editors have settled on the termembassy per the majority of sources and since the building appeared part of the Iranian Embassy complex. May I expect you to self-revert? Cheers, —kashmīrī TALK09:58, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, you may not expect that. I don’t have time to read all that. The ITN blurb was changed after a discussion at Errors noting that consulate is given in the first sentence of the article.Stephen12:33, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On a friend's birthday - she is pictured on my talk - I have anotherRD death article that needs reviewing,Martti Wallén. --Gerda Arendt (talk)13:05, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pictured on the Main page: Brian'sMozart family grand tour, mystory today, andMozart related to all three items ofmusic on my talk: our 2023 concert, an opera in a theatre where a Mozart premiere took place, and those remembered, the bass andLiana Isakadze, a violinist from Georgia (whose article would be better with more details about her music-making). --Gerda Arendt (talk)10:39, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I remember today Bach's 1724 cantata for this Sunday which is unusual in many respects. The violinist made it to the Main page, but another woman needs attention forRD,Marina Kondratyeva. --Gerda Arendt (talk)19:58, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

She's on the Main page now. Mystory today is - because of the anniversary of the premiere OTD in 1782 - aboutDie Entführung aus dem Serail, opera byMozart, whileyesterday's was - because of the TFA - aboutLes contes d'Hoffmann, opera byOffenbach, - so 3 times Mozart again if you click on "music" ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)12:18, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especiallyView from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's wasa great mezzo, and on Thursdaywe watched a sublime ballerina. If that's not enough my talk offers chamber music from two amazing concerts. --Gerda Arendt (talk)12:01, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Main Page history/2024 July 30b hada baritone,a violinist, a composer anda Bach cantata, - almost too much, and the composer's article,Wolfgang Rihm, improved much over the last days, could still grow. --Gerda Arendt (talk)21:23, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Job title

[edit]

Question onthis. Does it not fall under the first bullet point atMOS:JOBTITLE? I imagine I'm missing something, but I doublechecked MOS and thought the alt had it right. Appreciate any insight you have!Ed [talk] [OMT]04:33, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Because it has a modifier, Incumbent U.S., it's not a title but a job title. At least I think that's where we've landed. Also makes it consistent with the other president on there.Stephen04:56, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. I figured it went the other way because the title was followed by the name. The MOS table should probably have an example that speaks to this scenario... but it's not really that important, I suppose. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!Ed [talk] [OMT]05:12, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

September music

[edit]

Today isSchoenberg's 150th birthday! On display his portrait byEgon Schiele, music fromMoses und Aron, and two DYK hooks, one from 2010 and another from 2014; the latter, about his 40th birthday, appeared on his 140th birthday ;) - Seeplaces for a stunning sunrise, on the dayBruckner's 200th birthday was celebrated (just a few days late). --Gerda Arendt (talk)20:58, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

He got attention, now some forHelmut Bauer (bishop) would be nice because his Requiem (livestream) will be tomorrow. -Today I remember an organist who was pictured on the Main page on his birthday ten years ago, and I found two recent organ concerts to match, - see top of my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk)20:27, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Now it'sLeif Segerstam. Listen to the music inmy story: I put it on DYK 10 years ago (mentioning Ukraine) and heard it today for the first time. That violinist/violist was incredible! Oct 16 OTD

[edit]

I saw that you removed an entry from OTD. On my resolution, the OTD has a huge gap, and one more entry doesn't cause the template to go past the DYK template. Does your version of the Main Page have any gaps in OTD? I'm tempted to revert your edit but I wanted to check in with you first.Z1720 (talk)01:25, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, we only have 3 ITNs, albeit one of them is long so probably the equivalent of 4 ITNs. We've never usually had 6 OTDs in that case. It was very unbalanced in my widescreen view.Stephen02:45, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Main page balance

[edit]

Just letting you know that Iremoved an OTD item just before midnight UTC to achieve main page balance. I know that it's a bit subjective, as it depends on screen size etc, but it looked "perfect" after the OTD removal.Schwede6604:29, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A request...

[edit]

Please could you not repeatedly undo my actions on the main page? Do you think I'm stupid or something? I cited the guidelines for ITN in my edit, there is no provision for using "shown" instead of "pictured" and it's a completely meaningless distinction. "Rendering pictured" is not at all the same as "picture pictured". Honestly, you're a great admin and you do fantastic work, but this sort of thing just annoys other editors and for no tangible gain. It's better for readers if there's consistent terminology.

As a favour to me and in the interests of collegiate editing, please could you self-revert to my version which complies with the instructions, and if you want to pursue the "shown" thing, start a discussion atWT:ITN? Cheers  — Amakuru (talk)12:38, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your closes and WP:CLOSE

[edit]

I noticed that you closedWikipedia:In the news/Candidates#Oasis Live '25 Tour, and after looking back at some of your recent closes, I don't think you're followingWP:CLOSE the way you're supposed to.

  • Discussions with clear consensus do not need to be closed, they can simply be acted upon.
  • Discussions must be kept open so there's sufficient time to discuss. Both of your two closes currently on WP:ITN/C took place within hours of the discussion opening; many time zones didn't even get a chance to weigh in at all.
  • Discussions should not be closed if there is still discussion ongoing and new arguments are being introduced.
  • Closers are expected to discard !votes that are based on "personal opinion only".
  • Closes should not be done solely with a statement that there is not consensus.

Generally speaking, closes need to comply with all of those points to be valid, and I don't believe your recent closes fulfill this.Thebiguglyalien (talk)🛸00:25, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I closed the discussion as there was no way that item was going to get posted, despite the lengthy protestations of the nominator. As per most closes, any editor can re-open the discussion and waste everyone's time before it gets closed again.Stephen03:34, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please reopen the Oasis nomination

[edit]

Hello Stephen. I'd like to ask you to reconsider the closure of the Oasis nomination in light of the evidence I've just posted here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:In_the_news#Please_clarify_your_stance_on_show_business_events

Specifically the Guardian and New York Times pieces, all linked.

The discussion was undoubtedly lost on the numbers, so you were right to close it last night. But it's quite obvious most if not all of it was based on completely bogus grounds that need to be revisited in hindsight.

This is not a UK only event (and it wouldn't be grounds to oppose even if it was). The ITNSIGNIF is well established in the morning after the night before (even though it was obvious before). And the coverage clearly goes far beyond some whacky notions that it's still only UK musical niche or media hype style reporting, or incredibly, a slow news day (seriously?!?!).

This is clearly, obviously, a very significant cultural breakout event, as proven by the links, a mere handful of what's out there. And the event is still current for the purposes of ITN. This is Eras level interest, but with far more justification from a cultural and thus encyclopedic perspective.

If it must still be rejected simply because ITN doesn’t want to post commercial events period, on some frankly ludicrous grounds that Wikipedia could or would make a blind bit of difference commercially to an event as huge as this were it to promote it on the Main Page, that should be made clear in the guidance.

Even if this is not a complete ban, but there is only tolerance here to post truly once in a century events of this nature, ironically those links prove that this might even qualify on those grounds.

There will be other successful Taylor Swift tours. There might never be another Oasis reunion. And even if there was, the reaction/reception would be unrecognisable to this one. Unless of course, there is new material that is also critically acclaimed. And the sources are just as clear that is also incredibly unlikely to ever happen. You can only milk a cash cow this cynically once.

It's not a stretch, per the links, to say that Wikipedia will seemingly only ever get one chance to demonstrate it can recognise the opportunity here to say something significantly educational about UK/music culture to an audience who might not have a clue about the subject via the Main Page. So it shouldn't pass it up for frankly ignorant if not entirely bogus reasons.

If after reconsideration, it is thoroughly rejected on commercial events are banned grounds, or the position of the bar for true breakout significance is firmed up (AI Micheal Jackson molesting Bubbles?) and Oasis reunited are seen to clearly be below it, that would at least make sure people like me, serious journalists, don't waste our time engaging with Wikipedia ever again. Not least becuase we do have a day job and we can get paid for decent intellectual effort.

Sorry to be so emotional/wordy, but this has really annoyed me. I genuinely thought I knew what Wikipedia was for. What it valued, namely time and effort to form an informed opinion on a matter like signficance, something defensible and can be defended. Apparently not.

Thanks in advance, hopefully!Morgajon (talk)10:48, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Note that I have updated the article so that it now qualifies for ITN as updated, pending approval on significance grounds. The work is crap, but that's all I could be motivated to contribute while it seems highly likely Wikipedia views this event as just another insignificant concert and anyone wanting to feature it on the Main Page is therefore a shill or an idiot. I may yet return and do a better job, or my anger at being largely ignored might just fester until Monday and the day job calls me back.Morgajon (talk)12:34, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitration

  • Aftera motion, arbitration enforcement page protections no longer need to be logged in the AELOG. A bot now automatically posts protections atWP:AELOG/P. To facilitate this bot, protection summaries must include a link to the relevant CT page (e.g.[[WP:CT/BLP]]), and you will receive talk page reminders if you forget to specify the contentious topic but otherwise indicate it is an AE action.

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Stephen. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
