Wikipedia and copyright

[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Spinifex&Sand! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoidcopyright andplagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate asmall amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with doublequotation marks (") and cite the source using aninline citation. You can read about this atWikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See alsoHelp:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all informationin your own words and structure, in properparaphrase. Following the source's words too closely can createcopyright problems, so it is not permitted here; seeWikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources toverify the information and to demonstrate that the content is notoriginal research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images.Fair use images must meet all ten of thenon-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • Ifyou own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, youmay be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable,to the world, into either thepublic domain (PD) or under asuitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please seeWikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described atWikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See alsoHelp:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must beblocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you.asilvering (talk)06:32, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you asilvering. I am still a relatively new editor, but do want to create good content and so your feedback is appreciated. Thank you for your feedback. I have resubmitted the Agnes Smith page for review. ~~Spinifex&Sand (talk)04:18, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination ofDraft:Agnes Clifford Smith

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to readthe guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using theArticle Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed onDraft:Agnes Clifford Smith requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done undersection G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguouscopyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy fromhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/community.28046921 andhttps://www.wvencyclopedia.org/print/Article/465/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source ofinformation, but not as a source ofsentences. This part is crucial:say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violatorswill beblocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then youmust verify that externally by one of the processes explained atWikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, seeWikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look atWikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a questionhere.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you maycontest the nomination byvisiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line withWikipedia's policies and guidelines.asilvering (talk)06:33, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission atArticles for creation:Agnes Clifford Smith (July 25)

[edit]
Your recent article submission toArticles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by Dusti was:
This submission's references do not show that the subjectqualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not showsignificant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject inpublished, reliable, secondary sources that areindependent of the subject (see theguidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (seetechnical help and learn aboutmistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmitafter they have been resolved.

The comment the reviewer left was:
Seethe notability guideline on creative professionals. I have a soft spot for West Virginia, but I don't think she quite clears the notability guideline. One book that won a few lower-tier awards and only one source that specifically covers the author is not enough.

Jeremy Griffith court case

[edit]

I see you recently editedthis section on the Jeremy Griffith page, about the court case. In case you are not aware, that section was the subject of several lengthy discussions on the Talk pages. Your edits look OK to me (they have certainly made the content easier to understand) but I wanted to let you know it’s probably best to exercise caution when editing any discussion of legal proceedings, especially on a page where a lot of editors have had discussions about how best to present the content. And of course to be mindful of WP:BLP.Cabrils (talk)00:23, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia fromWikiProject Medicine!

[edit]
Welcome to Wikipedia andWikiProject Medicine

Welcome to Wikipedia fromWikiProject Medicine (also known as WPMED).

We're a group of editors who want to improve the quality of medical articles here on Wikipedia. I noticed that you are interested in editing medical articles; it's great to have a new editor on board. In your wiki-voyages, a few things that may be relevant to editing Wikipedia articles are:

  • Thanks for coming aboard! We always appreciate a new editor. Feel free to leave us a message at any timeon our talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is aparticipant list where you can sign up. Pleaseleave a message on the group's talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some help!
  • Sourcing of medical and health-related content on Wikipedia isguided byour medical sourcing guidelines, commonly referred to as MEDRS. These guidelines typically require recentsecondary sources to support information.Primary sources (case studies, case reports, research studies) are rarely used, especially if the primary sources are produced by the organisation or individual who is promoting a claim.
  • The Wikipedia community includes a wide variety of editors with different interests, skills, and knowledge. We all manage to get along through a lot ofdiscussion that happens behind the scenes andthrough the editing policy. If you encounter any problems, you can discuss them on an article's talk page or post a messageon the WPMED talk page.

Feel free to drop a note on my talk page if you have any questions. I wish you all the best, and thank you for your help!
I wanted to leave a note as I had to remove your addition to themyalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome page because it relied on primary sources instead of secondary sources aspolicy for medical topics instructs. I hope this information will be helpful for your future editing!Innisfree987 (talk)07:36, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Innisfree987, thanks for the advice. Just curious why you removed that content, given its mostly based on a Science Daily article, which is a secondary source? The same material is also discussed here in The Guardian:https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/oct/08/scientists-say-they-have-first-blood-test-to-diagnose-chronic-fatigue-syndrome-me.
So I would have thought it would be OK to include those additions??
I am a bit new to editing Medical focussed articles, so I do appreciate your feedback.Spinifex&Sand (talk)00:38, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tag. In this instance, the Science Daily piece appears to be a press release, so that is a primary source, but additionallyWP:MEDPOP recommends against using news articles, so the Guardian isn’t ideal either. We’re looking for secondary sources from scientific authorities, like systematic reviews or major national guidelines. I know this can be somewhat counterintuitive: if you have a few minutes to readWP:MEDRS, it’s well worth the time!Innisfree987 (talk)03:15, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Got it! Thanks @Innisfree987. I will see what I can find.Spinifex&Sand (talk)20:28, 16 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
