What again?

I'm a long term user (first edit 2006) and have been an admin on or off since 2007. When we first started there was so much idealism and we really had no strong policies about inclusion except a desire to have some level of sourcing. As time moved on we became more structured and around the time I became an admin in 2007 we were grappling with the concept of collapsing non notable articles into lists which I was at the forefront of as a regular afd closer and constant presence at DRV. I had a lot of patience once and for that reason was regular DRV closer for a long time after GR Berry left the project. Sadly, my patience was degraded over time and getting involved in the PORNBIO wars pretty much washed out a lot of the good faith that policy and courtesy quite rightly requires us to show. This was again a major change in our approach to content and one of the first SNGs that was deprecated in favour of a more rigid approach to proper sourcing. Since then our content in this area has become much better and we are seeing similar struggles now in the sports arena where SNGs are slowly giving way to GNG level standards.

I have always taken a very legalistic approach to closing discussions that I recognise does not fit well to the current community standard, where low participation level allowing more brigading of votes or allowing more non-policy based arguments. For this reason I'm not really closing discussions but will still happily review old closes. Otherwise I mostly review and nominate unsuitable content as aBLP is a serious matter and needs to be properly sourced.

i am willing to userfy deleted articles for improvement as long as there is a reasonable likelihood that they can be saved. If you are challenging a deletion, do you havethree good sources?

Useful Links:

Please don't leave talkback templates as I always watchlist pages when I edit and I'm perfectly capable of looking for a reply myself.
please stay in the top three tiers

Declaration: I recently logged into my daughter's account to upload and post some images to her sandbox for her university course. For privacy reasons I will not be publicly disclosing her account but will do so privately to any admin in good standing. This was a one time thing and there is no intention for me to edit further using her account. By the way uploading images on mobile is needlessly difficult event for a user who has been around since 2006....SpartazHumbug!15:55, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! For full disclosure upfront, I'm a PAR employee. I submitted a brief write up requesting for a review of PAR Technology's page deletion from a few years ago. I have detailed reasoning based on new information here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2024_June_13

Can you please have a look and let me know if this is something we can discuss? Many thanks!LeLiPAR (talk)13:57, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in thisanonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on itsMeta page and view itsprivacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Contestingspeedy deletion nomination ofRamakrishna Mission Boys' Home High School, Rahara

[edit]

A tag has been placed onRamakrishna Mission Boys' Home High School, Rahara requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. I have contested the deletion because this is a well-known school, far more notable than other articles on schools like Taki Ramakrishna Mission High School, Ramakrishna Mission Siksha Mandir, Sarisha. It has won the Best School Award from the Government of West Bengal in 2019, 2021 and 2024 respectively. If this page is nominated for deletion, then the same should be done with the above pages as well. Therefore, I strongly believe that the page should bekept as a stub and modified gradually.Indian English Literature (talk)09:10, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request for draft restoration: Cesare Catania

[edit]

Hello Spartaz,

I am Sabrina, working in the press office for the artist Cesare Catania (declaring Conflict of Interest).

I understand that the article was deleted after an AfD discussion. However, since then, significant new independent coverage has become available. Here are some examples:

Given these new sources and his confirmed participation in the Venice Biennale Arte 2024 and Florence Biennale 2025, I kindly ask if it would be possible to restore the article into Draft space (User sandbox). This would allow us to completely rewrite the article in a neutral encyclopedic style, strictly supported by reliable independent references.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. --Pressart1979 (talk)09:05, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have done this on condition that the draft is reviewed via the articles for creation process by an independent editor. If it reads like puffery and lacks an encyclopaedic tone it's highly likely to get rejected for that reason aloneSpartazHumbug!10:35, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Spartaz. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Hello, I hope you are doing well. You stated atthe ANI discussion andtheir talk page that you intended to block them for a week, but instead you only seemed to block them for 72 hours (3 days). Not sure if that was a mistake, but I thought that I would alert you to that possible error. Thanks, –PharyngealImplosive7(talk)18:57, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I was about to mention the same thing. I am guessing it was a mouse selection error. In any case, I think that the reasonable approach now is to leave it alone and give them the benefit of the possible error. Either way, they have been sanctioned.Robert McClenon (talk)19:20, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll also note that their user page claimsUser:20 Mega Rolls TV as an alternate account. I suggest it be blocked before they get themselves into more trouble.EducatedRedneck (talk)19:25, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification on the Annamalai DRV close

[edit]

Regarding the Annamalai draft, does the close call for a formal acceptance by an AfC reviewer, or would me "accepting" a version of the draft (by moving it myself) I submitted be fine? A contention was that the AfC process is very conservative (and acceptance apparently requires much more than notability), but it does not actually have the authority to unilaterally block articles as often happens in practice. regards,TryKid[dubiousdiscuss]14:02, 3 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

A regular AFC reviewer who is uninvolved. A random who comes in to accept it just to force the agd will get reverted. Let's not play games eh?SpartazHumbug!16:50, 3 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that close makes any sense then. Multiple participants expressed the view that the draft in whatever form it exists should go to AfD for a clear consensus decision instead of it being up to individual "formal" reviewers to veto it repeatedly.TryKid[dubiousdiscuss]17:57, 3 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
plenty of comments said that it would need a further discussion and even restore voters felt it wasn't ready. My close reflects all of the sentiments including the amount of time that community has already wasted debating this man. We will debate him when a decent draft exists. That's a fair read of the entire discussion.SpartazHumbug!18:19, 3 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Spartaz. Thank you for closingWikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2026 January 18#K. Annamalai (I.P.S). You wrote in the close, "Therefore, once a draft is accepted at AFC, I will restore and relist." REDIRECT - DISAGREE - Jason Orrin Johnson

[edit]

I spent an ENORMOUS amount of time on this article to only have editors comment WITHOUT some even actually reading the sources correctly evidenced by the incorrect statements in their comments, so yes, I STRONGLY DISAGREE - One - Some kept incorrectly insisting he had a minor influence-Johnson WAS in fact CO-FOUNDERhttps://www.gamesindustry.biz/frevolution-x-split-controller-system-on-show-at-e3There is also a filing that shows Johnson Launched the Frankfurt Public Company that was later bought by the Swiss corporation that currently appears to own the ip.Also - I was trying to keep this articles to an encyclopaedic standard - Should I be adding a bunch of Glam Press?? There are also a lot of VISUAL images on IMAGE WIRE etc. of Johnson at the GOLDEN GLOBES (2008/2009) showcasing the controllers with dozens of Celebrities including Mary J. Blige, Josh Grobin, Pussycat Dolls, Chelsea Handler, Rumour Willis to name a few and an ACCESS HOLLYWOOD gaming lounge - in addition there at least 6 major Gaming Conventions that images are available from.As Johnson was instrumental in not only CREATING THE COMPANY, but DESIGNING THE PRODUCTS, and PROMOTING THE PRODUCTS - and the PRODUCTS were industry DISRUPTORS, INNOVATIVE, and some COMMERCIALLY SUCCESSFUL - then by extension - this is obviously NOTABLE. I was around in the console wars of 2010's and this was a BIG DEAL in the industry at the time.Corpus xmas (talk)18:38, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I am frustrated - my discourse to this point has been very metered and I had sought to keep all contributions understated and factual, and edited others work on this topic to reflect the same - and Ironically, it has been the thing used to criticize it - I am relatively new here as an editor - but I am not sure I am ok with the subjectivity when I went to great lengths to satisfy the guidelines, only to have them dismissed by opinion.Corpus xmas (talk)18:51, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
While I feel your pain, you were pretty much the only one who wanted to keep the content and as an admin its my role to review the discussion and declare what was decided not take a position on the content itself. If I did that I would have to vote not close.
You put some sources in last minute but the editor who reviewed them said that they did not even mention Johnson. Is that correct?SpartazHumbug!20:01, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I need to see a source that discusses Johnson, which means it can’t be a quote.SpartazHumbug!20:19, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If ign was already in the discussion then its not a mew source to influence the outcome. Its taken as already considered, playstationlife is clearly a press release and in fact quotes johnson. Quotes in press releases do not engage the GNG. So again i want the specific source that discusses Johnson.SpartazHumbug!20:18, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The development of The Product (FragFx)and company was particularly unique in the fact that the focus was only original conceptual periphery innovations, which I find NOTABLE - and not just reproducing or minor modifications existing products as so many companies did - many of which have wiki pages I might add. Anyway, I digress, burned out for now - and will maybe revisit this some time in the future.Corpus xmas (talk)20:02, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
What policy makes that inherently notable?SpartazHumbug!20:08, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Jason Johnson is policy-valid as:
a named designer
in a FragFX article
with sourced attribution
Maybe best represented as WP:CREATOR or INVENTOR (implicit, case-law based)
Wikipedia has long-standing precedent:
Creators, designers, or inventors may be notable if reliable sources explicitly credit them for a notable workCorpus xmas (talk)20:24, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
[[WP:INVENTOR]]is not a link or policy. CREATOR is a general link toWikipedia:Notability (people). Which part of that policy are you engaging?SpartazHumbug!20:34, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Looking back - the whole discussion seemed to be polluted by an early, seemingly personal, and rather disingenuous, criticism of the music by an editor - which is why I basically removed all those elements as I felt they were largely superfluous and refocused the article on what I had experience with, and I felt fit strongly in the WP:GNG guidelinesCorpus xmas (talk)20:10, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Conceptual periphery innovations are not to my knowledge a reason for inherent notability so I repeat my question about the policy basis. The editors in the discussion rejected the sourcing and its not the role of the admin to reject that consensus. The avenue open is whether the late sources in fact did discuss Johnson and I hope you have linked me the sources above.SpartazHumbug!20:14, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed :)Corpus xmas (talk)20:25, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I don't need to die on this hill - It's a significant contribution to a huge social engagement construct in the evolution of Video Gaming - by a small disruptive few individuals who challenged the supremacy of the giants like Sony and Microsoft, and had an impact. It's interesting, and I feel, notable - and felt it deserved a footnote so to speak.Corpus xmas (talk)20:33, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I felt it was really falling on deaf ears as literally only 1 person even commented on the Gaming - and no one demonstrated any knowledge about the industry and totally discounted the impact referenced by some of the top industry publications of the time.Corpus xmas (talk)20:35, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, sometimes the discussion just goes against you.SpartazHumbug!20:38, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point there is no inherent-notability policy for conceptual peripheral innovation.
The only applicable policy basis would be WP:GNG, satisfied by significant independent coverage that discusses Jason Johnson himself in relation to FragFX - which I thought it had.
The sources presented definitely establish the notability of the product, but perhaps not sufficient independent coverage of Johnson as a subject from the point of view from some.
I was arguing from:
industry knowledge
real-world impact
historical disruption
Maybe best to reframe this all is a future look at the initiative as a whole - or dig for more archival sources to bolster the argument re: guidelines - unfortunately, few creators put themselves front and centre - so not sure what I will find.Corpus xmas (talk)20:48, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
AFD has to work with the policies are they are and not as you would wish them to be. There was not a groundswell of support for your position, in fact, quote the opposite,SpartazHumbug!20:51, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I’m sorry that the outcome didn’t go the way you wanted. If you can come back with better sources or a directly policy based argument I can try and help you further.SpartazHumbug!20:36, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It does bother me that I see many other notations of things that seem to have much less technology or cultural impact, but survive because of press "fluff" - but I understand :)Corpus xmas (talk)20:53, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time for your clarifications - still just learning - all good information...moving on :)Corpus xmas (talk)00:43, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just querying your close on the above AfD. It could easily have taken another relist if consensus was unclear, but was it that unclear? Two editors felt it should be kept, but five felt it should be merged or redirected. The AfD was only ever about the PAGEDECIDE question, and the consensus was surely for that outcome. Notably two new merge/redirect !votes were added after the sources were raised and two others were reaffirmed after the first relist too. The close is meant to assess consensus. Wasn't that the consensus?Sirfurboy🏄 (talk)17:36, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

After the redirect there was a reaffirmation of accepting the sources, you and Cunard chatting and a merge/redirect. I don’t see that as supporting a clear consensus. We can’t keep relisting so at some point you have to ask who wins. That wasn’t clear so NC was my conclusion,SpartazHumbug!20:57, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The "Restating my view" was from the above merge and redirect. But again, if it was not clear after just one relist, why not just relist again? I'd be grateful if you would consider doing that.Sirfurboy🏄 (talk)21:16, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not minded too as the last vote was implicitly about the state of the article not the sourcing. Since sourcing doesn't need to be in an article to count towards notability and TNT wasn't really widely discussed I don't see that vote as indicative that a further relist is going to help.SpartazHumbug!23:40, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You mentioned "Not averse to revisiting this if sourcing can be confirmed." Would you be willing to look at the deleted article and send me the links to the sources that were included? Thanks,BeanieFan11 (talk)23:36, 12 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
