Game hint lines

[edit]

I came across an article inGamePro about live game counselors and 900 hint lines which has one or two useful pieces of info. The trouble is, I can't seem to find an article on Wikipedia where such information might appropriately go. Any suggestions?--Martin IIIa (talk)20:34, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There's probably enough coverage to convertNintendo Power Line into a broader concept ofVideo Game hint lines, of which the most famous was the Nintendo Power Line:Kotaku,A.V. Club, the line was revived for the NES Mini launch (Engadget,CNet,Polygon),Wikia (unusable as a source but can be used as a base for research), featured in The Wizard, that time when one number was bought by an sex company (N4G,NBC,Wired),Gamasutra,Felicia Day biography,Geek.com,Sierra Hint Line (this is an archive of 1989 Sierra Magazine), Sega, Konami also had their own Hint Lines. · Salvidrim! · 20:55, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Evil Stone moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created,Evil Stone, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations fromreliable, independent sources in order to show it meetsWP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is ofcentral importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft todraftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia'sgeneral notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969TT me13:19, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

I know you've been less active on Wikipedia lately, so I'm not sure if this will mean much to you. But I wanted you to know that I now think the Committee was overly harsh in desysopping you in 2018. If you could see yourself ever back actively and happily adminning, let me know if you'd ever want to talk about the path to becoming a sysop again. Best,KevinL (akaL235·t·c)21:20, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks@L235:, I won't lie, I've been thinking about it recently! I've stayed a bit out of sight of patrolling the admin/community boards but I wouldn't consider myself inactive, I still edit here and there every week. Also, I don't necessarily think the desysopping was unwarranted, although I do miss the gnoming/clerking work I was able to so back then. I'm definitely open to returning to active duty if you think the community will support it!Ben · Salvidrim! 23:11, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If the result of the previous AfD was "delete", surely this article should not exist and its re-creation should be eligible for PROD? –PeeJay11:57, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi@PeeJay:, unfortunately, as per policy, an article subject is **ineligible for PROD if it has even been PRODed or AfD'ed in the past**.WP:PRODNOM. Note that if the new article is substantially identical,CSD#G4 may apply, which an administrator can evaluate by viewing deleted revisions (but considering the decade in-between I doubt that it meets the "substantially similar" threshold of the usual post-AfD recreations).Ben · Salvidrim! 12:27, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Frustratingly, I can't see what the deleted version of the article looks like to compare. Do you know any way to do that? Happy to nominate under CSD#G4 if valid, otherwise I think this would definitely fail an AfD. –PeeJay23:11, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, only admins can view deleted revisions. But considering the decade in-between I doubt that it meets the "substantially similar" threshold of the usual post-AfD recreations anyways.Ben · Salvidrim! 23:33, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

VanishedUserABC

[edit]

Why did you editUser talk: VanishedUserABC[2][3][4]?Horse Eye's Back (talk)15:52, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi, the abovementioned account was for a user whoWP:VANISHed in 2013. Later in 2013, 2015 and again in 2017 there were accidental messages left by automated scripts which had been reverted by Auric and by myself, and then applied page protection to avoid future accidental scripted messages. You can see all that through mthe edit summaries in the revision history.Ben · Salvidrim! 16:08, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why were they reverted? I don't see anything that says posts to the talk pages of vanished users aren't allowed.Horse Eye's Back (talk)16:18, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also note that only two of those comments were left by bots. This one was left by an editor[5].Horse Eye's Back (talk)16:21, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Vanished accounts are vacated by the former operator, there is no point for scripts to erroneously leave accidental messages to an account that does not operate anymore. The specific diff you linked was an automated message from an AfD script (WP:TWINKLE). Generally speaking, all of the pages in the vanished account's userpage are deleted, as was the case here, but generally the main user talk is not deleted (perWP:CVUT), but instead either preserved as it was when the user vanished, and/orblanked, which in this case is the same since the user blanked it themselves before vanishing their account. If you're looking for a hard rule engraved in stone that spells this out in bold authoritative letters, you will not find it, it's a bit of an admin judgement call. If you believe that vanished accounts should continue to see their vacated talkpages get buried under useless automatic messages, you're welcome to start a discussion on the topic to establish where community consensus settles.Ben · Salvidrim! 16:29, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm looking for any rule at all, it doesn't have to be hard and fast. To be clear I am challenging both the reverts and the page lock. I think you have consensus backwards, you made the edit so you would need to get consensus for it if as you say it really is novel (you can also self revert if you don't want to go through that process). We have a consensus on this,WP:TPO, and this doesn't seem to fall under the acceptable editing practices enumerated there. Personally I get a lot of information out of those automatic messages, they are not useless and you should not make that claim again unless you want to state that you personally find them useless but that other people find them useful.Horse Eye's Back (talk)16:41, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome to ask another admin if you believe an admin action is required here. My 2017 was based on my thinking that allowing messages to be left to an inoperative account invited confusion for message-leavers and passersby, as well as was discourteous to the used who went through the vanishing process. In any case, as I'm no longer an admin, I can't implement any change at this point.Ben · Salvidrim! 17:19, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Fascinating twist, its of course obvious in hindsight but it had not occured to me that someone could essentially lock themselves out of an article. I will look/ask around and see what others think is best practice in this area. Thank you for you time and detailed explanations.Horse Eye's Back (talk)17:21, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, yeah it literally happened to my own userspace as well -- my main userpage was FPP'ed, I had to ask to have it to get downgraded to SPP so I could edit it again after I left the admin corps :)Ben · Salvidrim! 17:23, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitration

  • Aftera motion, arbitration enforcement page protections no longer need to be logged in the AELOG. A bot now automatically posts protections atWP:AELOG/P. To facilitate this bot, protection summaries must include a link to the relevant CT page (e.g.[[WP:CT/BLP]]), and you will receive talk page reminders if you forget to specify the contentious topic but otherwise indicate it is an AE action.
