McMurdo Dry Valleys

[edit]

Hi. Sorry I didn't check the talk page. The might be a drier place than the Atacama Desert, but for sure McMurdo Dry Valleys are not the case. Is there any reason to suspect thatthis reference is wrong? Because 100 mm per year is far, far, far more than what some areas of Atacama receive --Jbaranao (talk)15:21, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well, very very interesting. In that case: a) It would be good if you could explain that in the article of the valleys, and b) I will add, if you agree, a phrase in the Atacama article in the vein of "an extremely local area of the McMurdo Dry Valleys" --Jbaranao (talk)16:06, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I do alright, thanks. And I also looked at the external resources cited. I think it makes sense and connotes the meaning intended as such. I did mention I agree with you that the way the dispute was framed up initially was not the best most professional way to go. I'm sorry you had to deal with that at the outset.Right cite (talk)21:08, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Building Holy Roman Empire categories

[edit]

I am in the process of trying to build Holy Roman Empire categories. I am currently under an edit restriction that makes it so I cannot edit anything found to be related to a topic "broadly defined". That topic broadly defined makes it unallowed to edit a large number of artists and musicians, especially those who worked before 1800, because a lot of them have at least some works that fall under that topic, even though the vast majority of their works do not. I am not sure we need the 18th-century German musicians , 18th-century German writers, 18th-century German artists and related categories at all. Here is where it gets interesting. Both the Habsburg Monarchy and the Kingdom of Prussia in 1780 crossed the boundary of the Holy Roman Empire, having areas both in and out of the Holy Roman Empire. In East Prussia, far beyond the limits of the empire most people considered themselves German. In the Habsburg Monarchy, you had many ethnic Germans far into Transylvania and in areas that are today in Serbia among other places. You also had the Duchy of Schleswig, beyond the limits of the empire, although it appears that the rate of speaking German there rose a lot after 1800, and that few there would have considered themselves German in 1780. I am thinking though for now just building the From the Holy Roman Empire cats, and letting other cats stand will be the least controversial move.John Pack Lambert (talk)17:36, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Princesses

[edit]

With how many people in the Holy Roman Empire held the title prince/princess, and how there territories were often much smaller than Dukes, Counts or Electors, I am wondering if in that case this is more a categorization by shared name, than anything else. Maybe we should sort Holy Roman Empire title holders not grouped by specific title, just as general nobility, and not worry about what their actually title was. What do you think? I think some of these prince/princess categories come from the idea that this is the title for children of a king, who is clearly an independent monarch. However there were lots of places, or various levels of independence, that were called principalities. A large number of them were statelets in the Holy Roman Empire.John Pack Lambert (talk)18:24, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related totheArab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated ascontentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics anddoesnot imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to ascontentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by theArbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipediaadministrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should editcarefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topicsprocedures, you may ask them at thearbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topichere. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the{{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Your crusade against an old and standard name for TUB

[edit]

Re your comment "there is nothing called technical university of berlin...thats just an invetions by google translator" (Special:Diff/1276071881): please see sources such as "Institutes of the agricultural faculty at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg" (Kemmer, 1952,doi:10.5555/19530300002{{doi}}: Checkdoi value (help)), "A Look at German Technical Education" (Hartley, 1964,doi:10.1177/002072096400200218), "German Technical Education—Further Notes" (Mohr, 1965,doi:10.1177/002072096500200416), "Innovations in Fluid Mechanics Education at the Technical University of Berlin" (Schade & Fernholz, 1982,doi:10.1115/82-GT-315), "Berlin as a Center of Science and Technology: Challenge and Necessity" (Starnick, 1989,doi:10.1007/978-1-4899-6715-2_21), etc., which all use this name long ago, before automatic translation was usable.

For that matter, it is easy to find instances of the same name on the web site of TU Berlin itself:[1][2][3][4][5] etc.

It may well be that the official position of TUB,in very recent years, is that they want the English translation of their name to be something else, but please don't falsify history to pretend that the name was never used. —David Eppstein (talk)20:23, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@David Eppstein:
So many things.
  • First: I'm not falsifying the story: The TU-Berlin has NEVER ever endorsed such a translationas an institution.Never! Of course, some people within the institution (unaware of naming policies) sometimes freely translate proper names. Like you, I'm also a professor (not in Germany, to make this clear), and we both are very much aware that when you list your affiliation (when submitting papers, such as the ones you referenced above), no check ensures the name you use is accurate. And papers get published that way. The same goes for books, conference contributions, etc. Even nowadays, people keep making that mistake. I was affiliated with TU-Berlin some 15 years ago (for transparency purposes, I let several years pass by before even considering editing anything related to it), and I remember professors reprimanding PhD students for having published papers with the wrong name. Same holds for the current pages you copied: don't you realize, it's nothing more than an automatic translation, that has not been properly checked? from checking them, it's 100% obvious that the German is the original one and that someone ran google translate on top (there are many translation mistakes in them; check them!).
  • Second: It's not recent. The university never considered a translation until the 1990s, when they realized that the name was actually being translated. So, they defined a policy (it took them many, many years), and it was established that the name should be Berlin Institute of Technology (never Technical University of Berlin, as Technical University is considered to be a different kind of higher education institution from what a TU is in Germany; it relates to the degrees it can offer). Some years later, the decided to also drop that and the the name in English was Technische Universität Berlin.
  • Third: if you take a closer look at my changes, people are doing things like [[Technische Universität Berlin|Technical University of Berlin]] or even worse (and much more commonly because more important articles refer to the time period): they are referencing the institution before 1946 as Technical University of Berlin, when it was not even a university (it was aTechnische Hochschule; for English-speakers it probably sounds like the same thing, but it is very different) and before 1920 it was NOT EVEN IN BERLIN (it was the TH Charlottenburg). And why do they do that? because the automatic translator does it that way, and no one is checking.
  • Fourth and last: It's not only about the TU-Berlin. I'm also checking many other institutions that are subject to the same problems with automatic translations. Fyi: the only institution that goes be the name Technical University is the TU Munich (and this applies not only to Germany, but also to Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands). Also I'm sick and tired of seeing old German TH (in Poland, Czechia, Hungary, etc.) being "promoted" to universities, just because an automatic translator does so.SFBB (talk)21:59, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Stop bullshitting me. It is obviously NOT about automatic translations. It is a translation that was obviously widely used. Now they want to not use it. That's ok, but your false claims that it was never used and your ridiculous excuses that this name only happened because of automatic translation are not ok. —David Eppstein (talk)22:26, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@David Eppstein:: you stop bullshitting me and treat me respect, no matter whether you're a sysop or not. Myclaim is that the university hasnever used or endorsed it (external yes...I'm not questioning that at all). You're not gonna find a single official communication of the university from 1946 up until now using that name. And, I alsoclaim that people are using automatic translations that suggest this translation. Just take a look at the articles I corrected today:Stephan Sigrist orPapaplatte, among others. Those are undoubtedly automatic translations from dewiki (just check them...undoubtedly automatic translations). Ok...you want to claim thatUte Schmid (that you created) isn't an automatic translation? well...fair enough, I recognized that the articles deviates a little bit more from the dewiki version, so...sorry....I did not take the time to check everything in so much detail before, before writing my comment...but still you should have paid attention to such issues better.SFBB (talk)23:22, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

An International sports competition is a type of Sports competition, so they should not both be on the same article for the same place.Crowsus (talk)23:03, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Whether you regard West Berlin as a country (you've got a lot of work on to create a category tree there, particularly since all citizens were BRD and in sports terms it was fully integrated with BRD activities) or a city-region, my point boveis valid.Category:International sports competitions hosted in West Berlin is obviously a subcategory ofCategory:Sports competitions in West Berlin.
