Guideline and policy news

  • Following arequest for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped atWikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • Therequest for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed withwide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supportspartial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template:{{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title.[1]

Arbitration

  • Following arecent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administratorsthat checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Reverse order for U.S. Thoroughbred horse races

[edit]

Would you please stop reversing the order of U.S. Thoroughbred horse races. ASAP I will put together the info on this subject and post it toWikipedia talk:WikiProject Horse racing for review so that we can present it to the Wikipedia "rules committee." Just so you are aware, no United States racetrack or racing association posts race history from oldest to newest. That practice ended c. 1910 and it was done for a very real reason. Thanks for your cooperation.Stretchrunner (talk)11:38, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A request

[edit]

Hello RJFJR. Thanks for your work formatting bare urls. I have a request - when you've run refill like you didhere and it has fixed all of the bare urls please remember to remove the{{Bare URLs}} template. It will help keep other editors from coming to the article and running the tool only to find that everything has already been fixed. Of course, it is proper to leave it if it hasn't fixed all of the refs. I know that refill2 sometimes removes the template but other times it doesn't so that can be confusing. Its not a big deal but at the moment I'm cleaning up the backlog of articles that was created while refill was not working and checking on the ones you've already fixed slows things down. Any help you can give will be appreciated. Thanks again and enjoy your weekend.MarnetteD|Talk18:48, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why refill only sometimes removes the linkrot template. My current theory is that there are several different templates linkrot, bare-url, etc that all look very similar and refill is only programmed to remove one or some of them but not all. But since I'm not sure if that is the reason I get nervous about removing the template if refill declines to. I'll have too keep track of which it is removing and which leaving and see if I can find a pattern for when I should expect to manually remove the template. Thank you for caring enough to comment.RJFJR (talk)19:19, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply R. I've taken the liberty of moving it to your talk page to keep things in one place. I've never figured the pattern out either :-) Sometimes I think it is which template is used as you mention and other times I wonder if it is where it is placed on the page. My suggestion would be to look at the ref section when you are done. If all the links are formatted then you can remove the template. If there are any bare urls left you can leave it and somebody else will be along to fix those that need the extra attention. Cheers.MarnetteD|Talk19:38, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. I just ran refill2 on more than a dozen articles that were tagged with{{linkrot}} and it removed the tag every time. Always nice when scrolling time is saved :-) That fits with your theory so I thought I'd let ya know about it. Cheers.MarnetteD|Talk08:36, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just adding to the thanks for your work on that article and so many more R. One thing to be aware of though - the{{more footnotes}} template (and its cousin{{no footnotes}}) is used when there are several items in the sources and/or external links sections that need to be moved into the article as inline references. The YG article only had one item in the EL's and no items listed as sources so the template you needed to use was{{refimprove}}. I know it may seem a little counter-intuitive but, if you read the full message that the templates leave on the page I think it'll make sense. Thanks again for all your work and enjoy your Sunday.MarnetteD|Talk22:34, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Table to prose

[edit]

If I haven't said already thank you for your work turning ugly tables into nice readable prose.

I tag short tables that should be prose, knowing and expecting that I will probably eventually have to come back around to the same article and do it myself (and that could be months or years). So every time I see your work it is a relief and an unexpected pleasure.

Refs in headings

[edit]

In the entry for the artist Alison Dunhill, I've just seen that you moved a ref out of a subheading on 17th October (sorry, I put it back before I saw it was your deliberate revision). I guess this is a standard practice, but as the ref in this case is the authority for the whole list (of the artists' major solo exhibitions) in this section, I thought it looked ugly and also confusing for the ref to sit on its own separate line beneath the list. Personally I think it works better for the reader in the subheading where it now is, but perhaps you disagree. Maybe it isn't necessary to reference the list anyway, in which case we could just delete the ref which is to the artist's own website? I'd much appreciate your views.— Precedingunsigned comment added byBozhyemoi (talkcontribs)17:56, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bozhyemoi: The Manual of Style, atMOS:HEAD contains "Section headings should:...Not contain citations or footnotes." While that is a 'should' and not a 'must' it is part of the MOS. When I move references out of headings before a list I put the reference at the end of the list, on its own line, to indicate it is a reference for the entire list. I believe the reason for avoiding references in headings is because it makes it impossible or at least difficult to have a link go to that particular section. It may also cause problems for text-to-speech readers used by some readers. Let me know if you have a more visually pleasing way of moving the references out of the headings. One possibility would be to add a start sentence that describes how the reference cites the list and put the reference on that sentence.RJFJR (talk)20:02, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
RJFJR: Thanks for explaining and I agree that it's best to follow the MOS wherever possible. Your suggestion sounds good to me so I've added an end sentence (in italics) and moved the ref there. I think that looks ok and avoids confusion, but do let me know if you disagree.

Oneupsmanship: This painting turned the friendly rivalry betweenEdward Redfield andElmer Schofield into
a feud. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream fromNew Hope, Pennsylvania,
and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury
for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of theCarnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition,Across the
River
was awarded theGold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old
Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it
in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of theDelaware River, from his own front yard!

Guff

[edit]

Hi,

Regarding theINSEEC Business School article, may you please let me know what do you define as "guff"? You added a banner about "puffery and guff", so I assume that you do.

Incidentally, I am quite shocked about the use of "guff". It is insulting regarding French culture. Have you read Montaigne, René Descartes and analyzed their influence on the Grande Ecole system to be able to say that?

This leads to the question: How should I edit this section to get rid of this banner then? Should I therefore describe this Business School as: barren, purely pragmatic and with no history or humanist values? And thus, when you do some anthropological, sociological and philosophical research about a Business School precepts, therefore, it's guff and puffery.

The content which you may qualify as "puffery and guff" is certainly the section about thehonestus clerus, which doesn't infringe any copyrights, and is verifiable. Correct?

To me it seems like there is room for interpretation. Shall there be a section inWikipedia's codex defining "guff", I will be happy to be enlightened.

I will be equally happy to know what are the criteria to get rid of "guff".

Thank you.— Precedingunsigned comment added byOnna Bugeisha 2020 (talkcontribs)08:39, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello I see that you made 3 recommendations to improve the article.

In regards to the History Section. I can break up the history into 4 parts: 1 Early history in Bohemia, 2 Northern Moravia 1390-1520, 3 Southern Moravia 1435 -1755, 4 History after the year 1755.

In regards to Reference. The two books listed cover over 98 % of what is listed in the article. The 2nd book itself has 245 pages of the family's history from 1300 to 2008. I added additional references which in turn expand what was listed. Some of these could be linked to the article but I do not know how. I may need you help ?

In regard the Genealogies: not sure what the concern is ? The links provide information on hundreds of relatives. Many are listed in multi other family genealogies.

If one is willing to search there are thousands of pages on the history of the family. Almost all are in Czech or German. Some are incomplete of incorrect. What is listed is the accurate history. Thanks for your interest in improving the article. Your help is appreciated.--Vlasime (talk)03:04, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RFJR

Why are you doing edits such as these[2],[3]?

I get that you were trying to fill in bare links, but the website to which those links pointed (http://www.leighrayment.com/) has lapsed and has now been taken over by some cybersquatters who appear to be advertising online gambling. I would have thought that even if you knew nothing about the topic,it would be very obvious that a casino is not a valid ref for a parliamentary by-election.

I know that Refill can be a handy tool, butWikipedia:ReFill#Health_warning is very clear that you need to check its results:ReFill is not perfect, and never will be. You are responsible for every edit that ReFill 2 suggests so you must take the time to inspect every citation that this tool creates and fix anything that isn't quite right. Do not make work for other editors to clean up.

In this case, it seems that you did no inspections. Please can you now self-revert all these edits, so that others do not have to clean up after you?

Thanks. --BrownHairedGirl(talk) • (contribs)20:55, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RJFRl I see that you are editing again, but you have not replied to my message.
You have not gone back to correct previous errors, and instead you are adding misleading refs yo new articles. e.g. on1942 Sheffield Park by-election, your edits[4] have labelled the link solely as "House of Commons", whereas the page linked ishttps://web.archive.org/web/20190428141724/http://www.leighrayment.com/commons.htm ... which is an archive of a hobbyist's page. Your edit cites the website as "web.archive.org", whereas that is just the archiving site, not the publisher. The result is very misleading.
I assume that you intentions are good, but this is just making things worse.
Please can you stop and discuss before continuing? --BrownHairedGirl(talk) • (contribs)21:11, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • A far as I can see, you have now reverted all the problematic edits, inthese contribs.
Thank you for doing that. However, having taken the time to write two explanatory messages to you, I am very disappointed that you chose not to extend to me even the basic courtesy of a brief acknowledgement to either of them.
The result of your silence was that I suspended my other work to spend time watching your edits to check that you did revert them all, and not just some of them. Your silence led e to think that I would probably have escalate this matter. That is an unnecessary drain on my time.
I still have no idea whether you even agree that there was a problem, or whether you just reverted to avoid discussion. I also don't know whether you intend to change your methods to ensure that your further use of Refill doesn't produce more nonsense lie the 84 articles which you mangled here.
That sort of stonewalling is not collaboration. --BrownHairedGirl(talk) • (contribs)22:04, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I was busy reviewing your message, then reviewing and reverting my edits. Sorry if it caused you concern. I am sorry my spot checks for the tool did not spot the difficulty. I am still considering if there is a long term problem with these items, which are now clogging Category:Articles needing cleanup with bareurl notices. (Also, I'm just about to take a break for dinner.) More later.RJFJR (talk)22:11, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, @RJFJR, but I don't buy that.
  1. You did 84 successive near-identical edits adding nonsense. If you were doing spot checks, you'd have seen that.
  2. Mysecond msg to you, asking for a reply, was at 21:11. You replied exactly one hour later, only AFTER you had started on others stuff, and after I a had reverted some of your edits. So your excuse looks like baloney.

This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomedat the talk page.

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an adminwill still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working onbetter tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you canread more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you cansubscribe tothe weekly technical newsletter.

We havetwo suggested ways this identity could work.We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You canlet us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Ordering

[edit]

Hi RJFJR, rethis edit is there a preferred chronology order? Sometimes it's a right pain having to scroll to the bottom of a page to read current information that's in table form.Neils51 (talk)21:50, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Neils51: I usually prefer chronological order for clarity. I think this is usually considered the standard though there is an exception for some elections where it is reverse chronological order. I find it confusing if in reverse chronological order but let me know if you find a statement of policy.RJFJR (talk)23:42, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Platinum Pudding

[edit]

Hallo, you removed the full recipe: was that because it was copyvio, or should the infobox link lead to somewhere to which it has been copied? TBH I didn't notice that the full recipe has been there before when I added a paragraph summarising it. I'm not familiar with the way recipes are dealt with in Wikimedia. Could you please make a link to the recipe if it's somewhere out there in Wikimedia? Thanks.PamD07:46, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Part of it is that I was concerned about copyright. A list can't be copyrighted (though the order of items can be) but narrative description (how the steps are described) can be. But it also looked long and detailed to me and I think someone had tagged it as how-to. Since it had a reference to a link with the recipe I removed it. It now occurs to me I should have made sure there was an external link to the recipe, which I'll go make sure is there.RJFJR (talk)15:01, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on itsMeta page and view itsprivacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Suggestion on Cast

[edit]

HelloRJFJR, I hope you're doing well. I was asked to cite the cast section and that's what was missing in my article creation. So I would like to know the best way to cite the cast list? Suppose if there were multiple references used to source the cast section, can it be done the way you did inAsura. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for your consideration.C1K98V(💬✒️📂)02:59, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If you have multiple references for the whole section then you can putsources: and then the references at the top of the section. (In Asura I was moving the reference out of the heading since we try to avoid putting references there.) Which article are you working on?RJFJR (talk)05:48, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I try to learn and adapt from articles already present on wikipedia. I intend to fix all my past creations. My latest creations arePower of Paanch andShadow Detective. You can also refer toDrawing Closer as I have cited multiple references in the cast section. Sometimes I encounter issues like thisCrrush andMix Up (film) as well. Let me know your thoughts on my creation. ThanksC1K98V(💬✒️📂)06:22, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitration

  • Aftera motion, arbitration enforcement page protections no longer need to be logged in the AELOG. A bot now automatically posts protections atWP:AELOG/P. To facilitate this bot, protection summaries must include a link to the relevant CT page (e.g.[[WP:CT/BLP]]), and you will receive talk page reminders if you forget to specify the contentious topic but otherwise indicate it is an AE action.

References

[edit]

Inthis edit yes, you've upgraded those refs from being bare URLs, but do you really think they are useful refs in that form? They are all newspaper articles, and a useful ref would actually give the newspaper title, article title and date (and probably a "translated title" for those of us who don't read Norwegian). Please take care to provide a reference which actually helps the reader know what the source is. Thanks.PamD08:56, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, RJFJR. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
