Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

[edit]

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be foundhere. If you have not yet signed up, you canadd your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to theWikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implementedseveral changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receivetournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are:Cwmhiraeth (talk ·contribs ·email),Epicgenius (talk ·contribs ·email),Frostly (talk ·contribs ·email),Guerillero (talk ·contribs ·email) andLee Vilenski (talk ·contribs ·email). [edit]

But my edit desc is: "first non exclusive was beautiful katamari. That's X360. That was... 10 years ago? 15? This game is for the people".

You being the editor that created that page doesn't give you a privilege to undo works of others, even if you don't like the edit. the edit is valid. The game was developed for PS2 for 2 games, and it says so in their entry, but saying the entire series is for it is plain wrong. please readWP:OWN.85.250.17.30 (talk)09:49, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

List of Crystal Dynamics video games 2: Electric Boogaloo

[edit]

Heyo, you may or may not remeber thatwe briefly talked about what to do withList of Crystal Dynamics video games some time back. While the main article is now a GA, the listicle remains in very poor shape. Since I currently do not (and likely won't soon) have the time for big rewriting projects, are you still interested in taking this one on? Regards,IceWelder []21:41, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@IceWelder: Probably not, to be honest. I made it more clear last year what games they had been a publisher for in the 90s, and I just replaced one odd ref, but I don't think I've ever played any of their games so I'm not that invested in the list. I'd be willing to swap it over from the current template structure to something more likeList of Blizzard Entertainment games if you want, but I'm not interested at the moment in tracking down refs for exact release dates and collections/compilations releases which would be the next, lengthy step to bring it in line with that list. --PresN01:41, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, I figured this would be the case. Thanks anyway! Perhaps I'll slog through it eventually. If the article is irreperable, though, I will retain a redirect as a last-resort option.IceWelder []17:24, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Donald Mustard

[edit]

Hi PresN, I noticed that you work on many gaming-related articles, includingInfinity Blade. I have created a draft about Donald Mustard, video game industry veteran and creative director behind theInfinity Blade trilogy. Since I work forAGBO, where Mustard is now a partner, I'm not publishing the article directly. Would you please review the draft in my userspace (User:SarahCaruso/Donald Mustard), editing as you see fit, and move it to mainspace? I'd appreciate it, thanks!SarahCaruso (talk)21:12, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@SarahCaruso: Hi, unfortunately I'm not comfortable moving the article to mainspace; the way it's written right now is like an advertisement for Mustard, with puffed up phrases like "led the game to its iconic status within pop culture". It manages simultaneously to not give details on what he actually did in the games he had a direct hand in, but also ascribe everything in Fortnite to him, and I can't trust the sources you used to back that up- you said "He also initiated the creation of live events in the game", which first of all is awful corporate-speak, but the source you used never says he did that, just that he was the CCO of Epic and that also Fortnite "became known for cultural crossovers". So, in order to feel comfortable moving it to mainspace, I'd have to rewrite half of it and check every source, and that's too much. Mustard is notable enough for an article, but I don't think this is the one. --PresN13:52, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for your feedback, PresN. I've noted your points and will rethink the approach to the draft and rewrite accordingly, to the best of my ability. I hope you'll be willing to take another look once I'm finished.
To relate to some of your comments, I ran into two challenges when creating the draft and wonder if you may have any guidance: First, much of the details of Mustard's specific roles in the games can only be found in RS in interviews, which I intentionally avoided as I know it's frowned upon to reference too many non-independent sources. Would you suggest including some and noting in the text that it's a personal account (e.g., "According to Mustard...")? And second, many of the articles about Mustard tend to take a hagiographic tone, so I tried to walk a fine line of avoiding excessive praise while keeping as close as possible to what's expressed in the sources. I realize that I need to work harder to avoid the puffed up tone even if the RS frames him that way.
Regarding the sentence in the draft about his creation of live events, I want to point out that theAxios reference does cover this ("Mustard also led work on building dramatic, live events in Fortnite that all players would witness at the same time"). I feel it's important to note this because, while I accept your point about "corporate-speak," I put a lot of effort into checking that all the content passes verification, and I want to make sure you and others here recognize that I'm editing in good faith.
I'd appreciate any input and will be back in touch once I've updated the draft. Thanks again.SarahCaruso (talk)19:10, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@SarahCaruso: Alright, I felt bad about it because he reallyshould have an article and you did a very good job of one overall, and I appreciate that you tried to tone it down (and that articles about himare pretty hagiographic, as you say), so I did some editing on it and moved it to mainspace. What you proposed about sourcing his specific roles to interviews and attributing it to him in the text is perfectly fine; I've watchlisted the article so if you have any proposals just put them on the talk page and I'll add them in without you having to wait around forever. --PresN02:20, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, PresN! I appreciate your time and continued guidance. I will post any future suggestions at the article's talk page.SarahCaruso (talk)01:46, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ángel (The King of Fighters)

[edit]

With help from KungFuman I managed to create an article forÁngel (The King of Fighters). Sadly, I am having problems with my monitor and the old one I am using can't let me upload nonfree images in Wikipedia for some reason. If possible, could you upload the infobox image for the character? This might be the best image for the character since it's a concept art made by the most famous SNK artist, Eisuke Ogura, and can easily be found in the wiki or an artbook. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk)18:21, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tintor2: Not clear on how a monitor could affect uploading non-free images? But done in any case. --PresN19:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. You see, two weeks ago my monitor was nearly burning and I sent it to repair. When I found the older monitor, I found that for some reason Wikipedia doesn't allow me to upload images for some reason so I also asked in Discord a user to upload a picture of Ryu Hayabusa as I was trying to expand on his notability.Tintor2 (talk)20:58, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receivetournament points at the end of each round. Unlike theround points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seenhere. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it onWikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome onWikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. @TzarN64: I did some accessibility fixes on the table since I'm well-versed in them, but I'm not going to work on the list beyond that. It's going to be a massive amount of work to find sources for the release dates for ~800 games in 4 regions, and I'm not particularly interested in the Wii U. --PresN02:05, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Election box candidate no party no change

[edit]

Hello, I noticed that youchanged a part of{{Election box candidate no party no change}} to include a missing rowscope. I'm not sure if this is what is causing a massive change in the template, but I've noticed that the election box now doesn't match with other types of election boxes, as it now has a dark grey and bolded part instead of having a lighter grey and non-bolded part with the rest of it. Compare these two:

Begin no party no change
CandidateVotes%
Firstname Lastname0000.00
Firstname Lastname0000.00
Total votes0000.00
Begin no change
PartyCandidateVotes%
IndependentFirstname Lastname0000.00
IndependentFirstname Lastname0000.00
Total votes0000.00

I'm not sure if this was the intended result, but I personally don't think it should be different for these two. Especially since the "winning candidate" isn't differentiated anymore.reppoptalk20:49, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Reppop: Sorry about that, I don't think I realized how many variations of election boxes there were last night. I've added a bit more to ensure there's no visual change; I don't think that's ideal but it's way better than a mishmash of visual styles. --PresN22:13, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It being centered is still bothering me since it still visually doesn't match with the other election box, I think you should also fix that to be flush left.reppoptalk22:54, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Reppop: Done. Really obnoxious that wikimedia applies extra styles to row headers, and also different ones depending on if it's the "first" cell in the row. --PresN23:02, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Could you take a look at your other changes for the other election box templates? I noticed onthis page that{{Election box candidate with party link no change}} is now centered, and doesn't match with the other templates above.reppoptalk18:24, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Reppop: Fixed- the template pages had them as left-aligned, but the article didn't. Now forced left. --PresN19:57, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review request

[edit]

Hey PresN. I hope whatever you're doing is going great. Perhaps this message will be a little corny, but with your experience with FA indie games, I think it'd be great to send this to you.

For over a year now, by the time I had only garnered a couple hundred edits, I've been working on the articleRain World, an indie game very special to me, as it's now my favorite video game of all time. I've never played Outer Wilds and don't know much about it, but I can tell from the passionate introductory paragraph in your FAC for the game, it is likely I feel very similar feelings to Rain World.

Though I've been making gradual edits on the page for a while, around January 2025, I had read your FAC for Outer Wilds, then Super Meat Boy, Tunic, and Doom 1993. I think your work on those articles had inspired me, because I started reading up on FA articles and essays about the criteria. I hadn't edited Rain World in a while at that point, but I started having some ambitions. I have been reworking the article for over a month now. I've done my best to find the most sourcing I can and making great prose. I don't want to say the article isready for FAC in case I manage to jinx myself (especially considering I havenever nominated even a GA before), yet I have already asked a few other editors to look over it, and they haven't brought many objections so far.

Now, I'm starting to have hopes that this will appear on the main page one day as my first high-quality work on an article. I've opened up a peer reviewhere for further comments and it has yet to receive feedback. Considering the absolutelybaffling amounts of FA's and FAL's you've written, I think your advice would help me out a lot. Of course, if you don't want you, you don't have to review this.

Thanks for reading. Good luck with your future content.Tarlby(t) (c)05:03, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tarlby: Thanks for the compliments! I'm glad my work inspired yours in some part. I'll take a look at the article/PR. --PresN16:54, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receivetournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

World Figure Skating Championships

[edit]

Good Evening... I'm sorry to bother you. I noticed that you have promoted some articles to FL status tonight. Any chanceWorld Figure Skating Championships will be among them? I just garnered what I believe to be a third support this morning. Thank you so much for your time!Bgsu98(Talk)00:52, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Bgsu98: Still needs a source review, and you said you were going to get to the points that Toadspike raised, so it'll probably get promoted in the next pass through. --PresN03:37, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the response. I address Toadspike's points. I have seen where other articles need a source review; what is involved in that?Bgsu98(Talk)11:34, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bgsu98: Someone goes through and checks that the sources are reliable, that the citations are formatted correctly, and spotchecks a few to make sure that they back up what the list is citing them for. --PresN11:47, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds simple enough. I will try to help out with some of those this evening after work.Bgsu98(Talk)12:28, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Information iconWelcome, and thank you for your attempt to lighten up Wikipedia. However, this is an encyclopedia, and articles are intended to be serious, so please don't make joke edits, as you did toOuter Wilds. Readers looking for accurate information will not find them amusing. If you'd like to experiment with editing, please useyour sandbox instead, where you are given acertain degree of freedom in what you write. Nice Easter egg.MimirIsSmart(talk)09:51, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Extracting parts of free images

[edit]

Hi there. I've been trying to tone down nonfree images of some articles and noticed this free image ofKyo Kusanagi (the character's design has changed several times since his introduction) used to promote a gamehere. I want to extract Shinkiro's illustration (heavily discussed in promotion) in a similar example to what people did with Hideki Kamiya'sfree image but I have no idea how I can do it or if I am capable of to begin with. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk)14:11, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tintor2: Eh, that's a free image only because the cover of the game isn't the central subject of the photo (though that's pretty subjective). Cropping it to just the cover removes that, and you just have an angled photo of a non-free image. --PresN19:07, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Also, there is a doubt I had about Kyo's article. Do you think some parts from reception are worth removing? I tried removing reviews but I can't tell if some sources are kinda useless or pointless. The fact that the article uses 191 references bugs me similar to when I revisedDante from Devil May Cry with another user. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk)21:59, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Tintor2: Ah, I think you misunderstood- there's no way that crop can be a free-use photo on commons. Taking a photograph specifically of a copyrighted artwork doesn't transform it into a non-copyrighted thing.
As to the reception, I don't have an opinion. It's not too long so it wouldn't be my priority to change. I'm baffled as to how that article has 191 references as well- somehow every references is used only once or twice? Like, every single fact is cited to a different source. That feels like bad editing- if there's a good source that covers a bunch of stuff, why would you limit it to one sentence and then base the rest on tweets and weaker sources? I'm more concerned that there's things cited to non-RSs that could have been cited to an RS already used in the article. --PresN22:47, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I removed the image and tried toning down the weakest sources. The only tweet I left involved a related artist who often worked for the series. It's one of the first articles I edited so I'm trying to polish it especially due to recent changes about notability guidelines. CheersTintor2 (talk)23:17, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Followed your advice and toned down references to 180 by using some third party sources in appearances and combining two articles.Tintor2 (talk)03:58, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Explanatory sentence at List of chiropterans

[edit]

Youredit atList of chiropterans really caught my eye. I think a similar sentence should probably be on every list of species. I'm less active on Wikipedia than I once was, but atUser:SchreiberBike/sandbox#Inclusion criteria for List of organisms of Place I've got a list of things I was working on along those lines. If you've got other ideas or would like help implementing them, I'd love to work with you. Keep up the good work. SchreiberBike | ⌨ 22:08, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@SchreiberBike: I agree- I added it to there (and every mammal list I've done) because a reviewer suggested it atthe FLC for List of glirids, as they didn't understand how the parentheses worked, but I also saw someone else ask for the same thing attheir List of insect orders nomination, so I think most readers have no idea why some authorities get parentheses and others don't. --PresN22:34, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Buster Sword

[edit]

After seeing the Master Swords I wondered if I could make for the Buster Sword since there is a bout its creating and marketing. However, when it comes to critical response I cannot find much. I found one or two sources calling it the Best weapon of versión but even when googling articles containing its are just mere mentions. If you find anything notable, could you link it? CheersTintor2 (talk)02:28, 20 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tintor2: I'll keep an eye out, but I really doubt that the sword is notable beyondCloud Strife. --PresN02:37, 20 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. I've been googling for a while but the only notable sources involve marketing, real life copies and few best weapons lists. Not much commentary for a reception section. Question

[edit]

How is mecc.co a only hobbyist fan site when it has a strong connection and has worked with MECC staff members, as seen in their about info.[2]: "This website is a production of the Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange (A.P.P.L.E.) User Group in coordination with the original CEO of MECC, staff", doesn't it lean towards reliability? Despite that, not only mecc.co but the journalCall-A.P.P.L.E also reported 80 million copies of The Oregon Trail.[3]Kazama16 (talk)23:24, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kazama16: The Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange is a hobby group, not a publication with editorial policies. Mecc.co is a hobby site run by Bill Martens, again not a publication with editorial policies. Call-A.P.P.L.E. is a fanzine, not a journal; it's a pdf Bill Martens puts out monthly, not a magazine with independent journalists and editors and fact-checking, much less an academic journal with expert oversight, no matter what the wikipedia article on it says. If the source had been an interview with the original CEO of MECC where the CEO said that the 1985 version ofThe Oregon Trail sold 80 million copies, I'd accept it. I'd think it was pretty far-fetched, but I'd accept it. Even if it was an interview in a hobby blog/fanzine. But that's not what this is- this is one dude out in Seattle, who is friends with a guy who maybe could remember what the sales numbers were, saying offhand in a blog post a number that no one else has ever said for the sales of a game he had nothing to do with and not saying where he got that number from. That's just not a reliable source. --PresN01:28, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject markup advice

[edit]

Hi PresN, many thanks for all the help with everything yesterday! Wanted to double check this with you to make sure before changing anything. Currently I use the markup on WP:Ukraine SIA-Class talkpages:
{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI|1={{WikiProject Disambiguation}}{{WikiProject Ukraine|importance=low}}{{WikiProject Cities}}}}
I based using "SI" on howWP:Military history does it, though I noticed that they add the class param twice: (example fromTalk:Battle of Oslo)
{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI|{{WikiProject Military history|class=SI|Nordic=yes}}}}
For WP:VG, the markup has List-Class for the banner and "SIA" instead of SI for the WP:VG template. I was thinking of having it so WP:Ukraine also uses "SIA" though wondering if you'd have any recommendations or insight about this. Guessing it doesn't make too much a difference but thought it would be good to check in case.DantheAnimator17:34, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also wondering if the |1= markup is necessary since I noticed WP:VG has it but WP:Military history doesn't.DantheAnimator17:35, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
1)@Dantheanimator: I don't think it matters too much about SI vs. SIA, though I've mostly seen it abbreviated SIA so that's what I went with for video games. Note that your Ukraine classmask right now only supports "SIA" as a value; if you want to support other forms you need to add e.g. |SI=SIA or |SETINDEX=SIA.
2) 1= is not necessary; by default for any template the first "unnamed" parameter is considered "1". That's not a wpvg thing to use an explicit |1, I think some people just write template calls oddly.
3) Your markup above doesn't work, which is why you're having to manually addCategory:SIA-Class Ukraine articles. Putting "{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI" is treated exactly the same as if you had put "{{WikiProject banner shell|class=List" - bannershell just treats SI or SIA as synonyms for list, and it passes it through as List to the wikiproject category. The Milhist example is right- you need to have "{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SI|{{WikiProject Ukraine|class=SIA|importance=low}}}}", e.g. give the WikiProject Ukraine specifically the SIA class parameter. SeeTalk:Adamivka for an example. --PresN19:30, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks PresN! Just to confirm, this is the markup I'll use for all the Ukraine SIAs: (using "SIA" instead of SI in the banner just to keep it standardized since it doesn't matter much and would be less confusing for other editors)

{{WikiProject banner shell|class=SIA|{{WikiProject Disambiguation}}{{WikiProject Ukraine|class=SIA|importance=low}}{{WikiProject Cities}}}}

Also all the SIAs I've seen use low-importance ratings instead of NA though wondering if NA would be better maybe?DantheAnimator19:38, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For VG I went with NA-class, though that was partially to distinguish it from Lists; I think either has an argument to be made for it. --PresN20:10, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping to class them as NA for the same reason so that helps. I'll go ahead and modify the markup based on the above, with a NA importance rating. Also, would it be alright if I messaged you in the future if there's other WikiProject technical questions that come up? Not expecting much of any though there's a few more edits to the WP:Ukraine template I thought of and in general your advice and experience is really helpful.DantheAnimator20:24, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free any time, I don't mind! --PresN21:04, 11 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request

[edit]

The edit notice for thelist of best-selling video games has become outdated and hasn't been updated for like 8 years to reflect the current situation. I want to request you to editTemplate:Editnotices/Page/List of best-selling video games since I'm unable to because I lack the rights to do so.

This is my proposed text = "This is a data-based article and should be supported by trustworthy sources to ensure accuracy. Sales estimation sites such asVGChartz andSteam Spy are not considered valid sources for this list, as they do not provide verified sales figures or professional estimates. Care should also be taken when citing secondary sources; if they reference a questionable source or an internet leak rather than the official one or themselves, the credibility of the source in question should be evaluated before inclusion."Kazama16 (talk)21:47, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kazama16: I tweaked the wording a bit, but done. --PresN22:15, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, PresN. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
