Collapsing comments at TAFI

Hello,

With a view of keeping discussion on-topic and focused solely towards future courses of action, I haveBOLDLY collapsed a discussion involving you at TAFI. In case you think there are valid pointswith respect to what can be done now that are also collapsed, I request you to re-state only those points outside the collapsed box.

Thanks and regards,TheOriginalSoni (talk)02:37, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

No complaints here.Northamerica1000(talk)06:02, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
  • Sorry but given the circumstances/issues internally within the project and the fact that they are unlikely to change and let us go anywhere with discussions, I'd rather work in other areas of the Wiki. I hope TAFI still continues and gets done what needs to be done.
Good luck,

As part of the second major "outing" controversy to hit the English Wikipedia in less than a year, the Chelsea/Bradley Manning naming dispute was dragged into the spotlight yet again when the English Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee ruled by motion to remove the administrator tools from and ban long-time Wikipedia contributor Phil Sandifer.

The numbers this week are beyond anything that has been seen since this report began. The top view count beats the average by an order of magnitude. Usually the appearance of numbers this big on the list is due to spamming, but in this case it seems they are due to honest interest; more specifically, Google Doodles, which for the first time claimed all five top slots. This column has raised numerous times the power of a Google Doodle to shine light on Wikipedia, but the wattage has never been as high as this.

Editor Retention

Getting back to the main page. I want to do some changes to the main page. Both graphic and content. I will be adding a section to an existing Editor Retention project and moving some content to the "Page two" to clear up space without losing anything. I have also proposed also new WikiProject on the editor retention talk page that would also be a new module for WER main page.

I would like to get input and contributions from a few people but basically want to emulate the EOTW template art and feel by replacing the W with the out reaching hands with the EOTW logo designed for us by Kelvinsong. Probably make new barnstars etc. and not override the old ones. I also wondered if the tabs could be edited for a different appearance?--Mark Miller (talk)22:06, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

HelloUser:Mark Miller: I'll comment at the WER talk page if I have any ideas. Regarding page tabs, for starters, check out the many examples atCategory:WikiProject tab header templates.Northamerica1000(talk)06:06, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
  • One more thing, I'd avoid moving content to the project'sPage 2. Almost nobody ever views the page. Compare these page views:

I feel that the short amount of content on page 2 should bemerged to the project's main page, so I've boldly performed this. Moving more content to page 2 almost guarantees that nobody will view or read it. Note that most, if not all of the recent pages views in November 2013 to page 2 are those that I recently performed. I'll also shorten the project's main page without removing any content there.Northamerica1000(talk)04:13, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

On Wikipedia, It's general practice to perform edits yourself rather than asking others to perform them for you. However, I've added the[1] link to the article. The Huffington Post article above is already used in the article. I didn't add "Alexi Torres, page 124, Ripley's Believe it or Not Special Edition, Craft Craftwork: Fabric of History" because I couldn't verify the source's existence. The other links above are rather promotional, so I didn't add them (SeeWP:EL).Northamerica1000(talk)17:25, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

I remain confident that my diverse skills, contribution experience, strong knowledge of Wikipedia policies and guidelines, egalitarian demeanor and ability to work, communicate and collaborate with other users would naturally transfer to strong administrator abilities. However, I'm presently involved with ample content work in the encyclopedia to fill my contribution time. Al (Allen) Schwartz

Northamerica, I appreciate your desire to improve the references of this and other articles, but it really doesn't help a whole lot just to dump references into the External Links or Further Reading sections. In the future would you consider providing an inline citation when you add a reference? Thanks. --MelanieN (talk)17:21, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

I actually add citations to articles regularly, although in this article I haven't gotten around to it yet. Also, I rarely add reliable sources to External links sections. I wholly disagree with the description of references being "dumped" in this article, and view the addition of references as functional and useful. Here's why:
  • PerWP:FURTHERREADING: "Contents: An optional bulleted list, usually alphabetized, of a reasonable number of editor-recommended publications that would help interested readers learn more about the article subject."
  • Sometimes after an AfD discussion has closed with an article being retained due to the availability of reliable sources, people don't add the sources to the actual article. This increases the likelihood of the article being nominated again for AfD, wasting everyone's time. Unfortunately, many editors don't adhere to the recommendedWP:BEFORE searches prior to nominating articles for deletion, instead simply relying upon sources that are present (or not present) in articles.
  • The added sources provide an opportunity for other editors to expand articles, and to cite content already within them.

Thank you very much for reviewing my page of the Ustvolskaya Piano Sonatas. I understand that there is already a page devoted to Galina Ustvolskaya, which includes information about her life and a list of her works (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galina_Ustvolskaya). However, my vision is to devote an entire page to a deeper discussion & research of her sonatas. Declined Article Application for Actor, Chris Broyles

Hello Northamerica1000,

I'm new to Wikipedia and I'm not sure how to link to the submission. "If you need any assistance, you can ask for help at the Articles for creation help desk, or on the reviewer's talk page. Please remember to link to the submission!" What is the link to my submission supposed to look like? When I click on the link it seems like a blank talk page.

My sandbox is here though:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fancy2635/sandbox

I was hoping we could discuss my recent application for an article on the actor Chris Broyles. He has narratedHow Do They Do It[1] on the Science channel since it's debut in 2007. (The show does have a Wiki entry which is out of date and some of the info inaccurate.) The show is in it's 10th season and is currently on Thursday evenings at 10:00pm on the Science Channel. It also repeats a lot including marathons of many episodes through out the week especially on weekends.

Chris Broyles has narrated over 150 episodes of that show alone. He's done a lot of other work including Colossal Construction on the Science Channel as well as two mini series on the Military Channel (which I'm sure will get filled in later). But being the voice of a current and popluar TV show that has been on the air for 7 years should be enough to make him notable... wouldn't you agree?

There are other "Voice Actors" that have Wikipedia articles that have much less in the way of credits andd their references on some are sketchy rather than official. For instance, the only reference on the following page for Robert Gorman is the voice actor's resume on his own website. (FYI I picked Robert Gorman at random from the Voice Actors list on Wikipedia.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_O%27Gorman

Would it help if I provided more biographical information? I know of a lot more credits for acting and voice over work that he's done. I don't have any articles that have been written about him. But I've noticed on voice actors wiki pages like Robert Gorman above that they don't have any articles either.

Thanks for your time on and help on getting this article published. I look forward to your response.  :-)

HelloUser:Fancy2635: I've moved your submission toWikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Chris Broyles, the preferred location for Articles for creation submissions. Please feel free to continue editing your submission there.
To be published as an article, the submission needs the addition of independent, third-partyreliable sources about the subject toverify information within it and to qualify the person'snotability per Wikipedia's guidelines. Please select the various blue links within my comment here to review various guidelines.
The video file in the entry is aprimary source that is affiliated with the subject, and doesn't qualify the subject's notability. The IMDB source in the article also doesn't establish notability, because much of IMDB is user-generated content (similar to Wikipedia).
What the entry needs to qualify notability are independent reliable sources from books, newspapers, magazines, journals, etc. that preferably providesignificant coverage about the subject. Below are some links that may be useful to locate sources, including customized search criteria.
Please feel free to add more reliable sources to the submission, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia.Northamerica1000(talk)02:22, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

HelloUser:Northamerica1000: Hello again. I appreciate your time and help but I'm a bit perplexed over your response. There is no "video link" in the article per se. That link I provided is the Science Channel's website for "How Do They Do It." He hosts/narrates a show that airs on that channel. The link I provided is a link to the actual channel that is shown on televisions across the US. I can't put a link to a tv set's channel that lets you tune in to the station. The link doesn't send you to his own home page and it doesn't send you to a company that he "works for." As a voice over talent he is an independant contractor and not an employee of the science channel or Discovery Communications. In addition, it's not like I've pointed to a company employee page. The Science channel's website shows clips and snippets from shows that have actually already been broadcast across the country.
Furthermore...if the show itself has a page on Wikipedia...which is proven to be notable by it's existence on Wikipedia...then how is the establshed host/narrator of that show not notable as well?
I understand the "notablitiy" factor is tricky on here but in this case...it seems logical that Chris Broyles is notable because of his credits and shows that have aired all across the country several times a week for the last 6-7 years. But yet a person who starred as an extra but got mentioned in an article is somehow more technically notable and would get their article submission approved? That doesn't seem right at all....
Have things gotten a lot tighter recently? How does "Robert Gorman" have an approived article? "Brooks Moore" for example?— Precedingunsigned comment added byFancy2635 (talkcontribs)16:32, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
HelloFancy2635. NeitherRobert O'Gorman norBrooks Moore is an "approved" article and anyone can see that both articles are tagged as having problems, and therefore are at risk of being deleted. We have nearly 4.4 million articles, many of which, such as the two you point out, have problems. That is not a reason to create new articles with problems. Instead, we work to improve the existing articles about notable topics and delete the articles about non-notable topics. It is your obligation to show that this voice actor is notable by Wikipedia's standards, rather than by your own logic. Tools to assist you have been linked to above. Reliable sources do not provide significant coverage to extras. They sometimes do for host/narrators. Those that receive such coverage are notable. Those that haven't received significant coverage aren't notable. It's that simple.Cullen328Let's discuss it19:21, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

You rejected this article on the basis of inadequate sources. Do I simply not have enough sources, or is there a problem with the source I have provided?— Precedingunsigned comment added byTravisLW (talkcontribs)02:11, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

HelloUser:TravisLW: The source in the submission, "Portrait and biographical record of Denver and vicinity, Colorado. Chapman Publishing Company. 1898." is acceptable. However, Wikipedia articles require significant coverage in multiple independentreliable sources to qualifytopic notability. Essentially, at the very minimum, two reliable sources that providesignificant coverage about the subject are required. Please feel free to add more reliable sources that preferably provide significant coverage of this subject to the submission, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia.Northamerica1000(talk)02:21, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

submission at Articles for creation: User:Suirauqa/Kuttner's tumor (November 24) declined

Hi NA1K! Thank you for reviewing my submission on Kuttner's tumor. I started writing it because in some random article, "Kuttner's Tumor" appeared in red font (meaning, as you know, no corresponding page). I understand why you rejected it, but the subject page you pointed to is a stub, and the 'chronic' subsection is not well-referenced or complete at all. Now, I could shoehorn my submission into that subsection, but it would look odd - since the other subsections also suffer from a paucity of information. My goal was to highlight on the termKuttner's tumor; so, under the circumstances, what would you recommend? Best,Suirauqa (talk)20:21, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification. I've accepted the submission, which is now located atChronic sclerosing sialadenitis. The article would likely also benefit from content being organized into sections. Additionally, I've created redirects to this article forKüttner's tumor andKuttner's tumor, and added a link to it in theSialadenitis article. Eugène Louis-Marie Jancourt

Hello! A good faith editor accepted a submission in AfC, my problem is that the references aren't supporting the subject's notability like the Oxford links for example that you need to subscribe in order to see the information also some sections are leaved without any reference. I just wanted to know if this can be accepted to be an encyclopedia article.FairyTailRocks (talk)05:02, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

HelloUser:FairyTailRocks: perWP:GNG, "Sourcesdo not have to be available online and do not have to be in English". So, sources do not have to be linked to web pages.
This source in the submission is reliable:William Waterhouse, “Jancourt, Eugène,” in Grove Music Online (Oxford University Press, 2007)
I'm slightly unsure about the dissertation source in terms of reliability: Emilian Badea, “The life and works of Eugène Jancourt (1815-1901): including a translation and Commentary of his Grande method theorique et pratique, Op. 15” (PhD diss., Boston University, 1992), 1. I'd like to think it is, because after all, dissertations are a fundamental part of academia and earning a PhD. They're also reviewed, judged and graded by professors. Therefore, I'm leaning toward the notion that it is reliable.
Regarding theLast FM source, I don't consider Last FM to be reliable, because much of it is user-generated content. Anyone who registers with the site can edit their entries.
Overall, it's rather borderline regarding overall sources in the article lending to the subject meetingWP:BASIC, but the entry appears to squeak by. Hope this helps out.Northamerica1000(talk)13:11, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

could you please explain me how to include a Sinhalese translation of an English article in Wikipedia.— Precedingunsigned comment added byNdjaya2000 (talkcontribs)14:02, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

If you're looking to add a new article to English Wikipedia from another Wikipedia, and if you're comfortable performing the translation, feel free tobe bold and create the new article. Just be sure to first check that the topic qualifies for a standalone article, per English Wikipedia'snotability and contentverification guidelines. Reverting your close on Thornton

Wikipedia:AfD#How_an_AfD_discussion_is_closed says:Questions or concerns about a closure should first be asked on the talk page of the editor who closed the discussion. If that does not resolve the concerns, the closure can be appealed at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Yet User:Steeletrap just undid it and you went along with it. I won't even start on all the reasons this is problematic, especially by this editor. Can you explain why you complied with the editor's demand. Thanks.Carolmooredc (Talkie-Talkie)17:48, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Please take a look at Steeletrap's talk page. I had pinged Northamerica1000 in my note. (And NA may noticed the revert via a notification.) So Steeletrap did not make a "demand". Please drop this. Thanks. –S. Rich (talk)17:51, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
I don't like this pinging that ends up taking things out of the prescribed process, so I'll just leave this as an objection to such pinging :-)Carolmooredc (Talkie-Talkie)17:57, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
I'm aware that it's preferred to discuss first, but User:Steeletrap didn't initiate one. Since I'm not an admin and User:Steeletrap contested my close atWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mark Thornton by reverting it, I respected their wishes, and then relisted the discussion. My close was entirely egalitarian and correct relative to the discussion at the time. I'll reply further at Steeletrap's talk pagehere, to keep the discussion in one place.Northamerica1000(talk)22:10, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Declined Article "Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey"

Dear Northamerica1000,

first of all thank you very much for reviewing my article concerning Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey GmbH. Unfortunately you wrote that you couldn't move the article for creation because it would already exist under the name Lufthansa Technik which irritated me a bit. Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey GmbH is an own autonomic company in the sense of the German Commercial Code, which means that they act on their own risk. Lufthansa Technik as the parent company just owns enough voting stock to control the management and operations by influencing or electing its board of directors. But in the legal sense these are two different companies. In this case there are the same circumstances like General Motors and Opel or United Technologies Corporation and Pratt & Whitney in which case the articles of the parent company is strictly distinguished from the subsidary. Maybe you were misled by the keyword "owner" in the infobox which I changed now to "Parent" to make it more appropriate.I would appreaciate it a lot if you would have a look at that subject again. Thanks for your help on getting Wikipedia better and better. I look forward to your response.

Best regards

HelloNorthamerica1000,

Thanks again for your engagement concering my article. As you recognized this article was submitted before by username LTAA1987, which was primary declined because the username seemed to imply that the user is writing on behalf of something other than itself which was not my intention as an independant and fact based wikipedian author. So the previous reviewerAlexf suggested to create a new account which complies with the username policy and resubmit the article again. At the same time he blocked user LTAA1987, so that it was impossible to withdraw the article to get it out of the submission process. Maybe you can help to delete the first draft (Articles for creation/Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey GmbH) created by LTAA1987. After creating the new account I worked on the second reason the article was declined, the reliable sources to qualify the topic's notability. In this context I worked hard on improving the article by adding numerous third-party references to verify the facts. I'm glad about your help to make the article sequentially better and better. If you have further recommendation, please let me know. I would really appreciate if you could help me by adjusting the topic trouble. Thank you very much in advance!CaptainBalu(talk)20:23, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Maybe It's Time for "MAYBEBOL"

The last time that I read this article was in 1980. Who owns the copyright? I will ask the copyright owner for permission to publish the article. Otherwise, I am afraid that a very well-written and poignant article describing the early years of computing will disappear (which is still relevant today - just look at what is going on with ObamaCare's registration.)

And, BTW, there is a lot of material on Wikipedia that is "copyrighted" or originally published from other sources.— Precedingunsigned comment added byIreneW123 (talkcontribs)03:42, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

The submission atWikipedia talk:Articles for creation/MAYBEBOL was deleted as unambiguouscopyright infringement ofhttp://www.cs.cmu.edu/~hgobioff/public/random_stuff/MAYBEOL. Some information about the author is available at the top of the webpage. You'd have to contact them for permission. I'm sorry your submission was declined and deleted, but Wikipedia takes copyrights very seriously due tocopyright law.

(Re:Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Server SAN)

Hello!

I'm yramberg.

You declined an article I submitted for review (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Server_SAN) for lack of notability of the subject matter. I can't argue with this -- the term 'Server SAN' has not been established as a notable concept and is, therefore, reject-able on the grounds you cited. I accept your reasoning.

I do have a question, though: Is 'notability' establish-able only by (reliable, independent, verifiable, etc.) source references that use the specific term? Will the presence of ample discussion of the *topic* suffice? Usage of multitude of terms that are almost synonyms and are covering the same topic, but not exactly under this particular term?

Another: Will this particular entry be acceptable as a section under a different, more general/abstract entry that covers the field under discussion? For example I'm thinking about this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storage_virtualization (but others may also be relevant)

Much thanx!

Typically, to qualify for an article, sources need to be directly about the topic, need to bereliable, and at the very minimum two of them need to providesignificant coverage about the topic to establishnotability. You may want to work on theStorage virtualization article instead, or perhaps onStorage area network. If adding information about Server Sans to these articles, at the very minimum, content needs to beverified by reliable sources (e.g. news articles, periodical coverage, news media, etc.).Northamerica1000(talk)16:25, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Having issues

I'm relatively new to Wikipedia, but have studied its policies and am very fluent with the English language. I am having troubles with the AfC editing bot when I've made a decision on the article. GreetingsUser:Lamercer: It appears you're referring to theAfC Helper Script. I also use the script, but I'm not entirely familiar with its detailed internal workings. It's possible that the script was temporarily down, and hence dysfunctional when you attempted to utilize it. I don't know, so herein I'm pinging the creators of the script (perthis page),User:Timotheus Canens andUser:Mabdul, and leaving talkback messages on their pages (and yours) to this discussion to request guidance regarding this matter.Northamerica1000(talk)05:57, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
Also, it's possible that you may have attempted to accept a submission for an article name in Wikipedia's main namespace that has beensalted with creation protection, which prevents the submission from being published. I've had this occur, and when it does, the script basically doesn't do anything. If this is the case, requesting an admin to unsalt a page will correct the matter.
