I am not sure whether discussion with you will be productive.

You began the edit war by undoing what I have spent at least 20 hours over the past fortnight preparing simply because your opinion differs from mine. Please check the page views, you are the first to visit this page to express that there is to much information.

I am wondering whether you have the courtesy to respect the effort I have put in, and accept my opinion that the data I have included is what I believe is relevant information. Do you have the capacity to be gracious in the way that I was in not getting into an edit war with you over the 2003 Tonga tour page?

As I write it is just past 1am where I am in Townsville. I have been up for 22 hours now after travelling from Cronulla to attend the first two matches of the championships. After getting into a terrific conversation with locals in a pub - just two slow beers for me over three hours - I return to my accommodation intending to update the page, to find the page I started a fortnight ago changed in line with your own opinion.

My approach on updates is to update the spreadsheets and then transpose that data into the wiki tables. The mends I have drawn on the RLP, as I acknowledged. The women's is from the database (although its in Excel) that I have built since begin research into Women's internationals in May 2020. That is three and a half years worth of effort. All my additions to the various Women's international team pages are referenced.

Your change to the page does cause me stress. This is perhaps most about the lack of respect, exacerbated by your failure to consult when we have collaborated in the past.

Well, I need to sleep now. Very tired. Hopefully this gives you time to think. Is enforcing your opinion more important to you than being nice.

The original concern is not mine but I admit to being the first one to edit as a result of those concerns, after the discussion I linked to had been open for several days and when all the comments were of the opinion that the tables, as formatted, are not optimal.

I have no problem admitting that I am of the school that "less is more" and that I do not like duplication of content simply for the sake of it. Just because we can doesn't mean we must or should.

So my question here is how does it assist the casual reader to know a player's entire international career and how many games they have played for their current domestic club in an article about a specific tournament? If I want to know that then I click through to the article on that player where that information is relevant and is hopefully there.

How does it help my understanding of the Pacific Bowl to know that James Tedesco has played 136 matches for Sydney Roosters or that he has also appeared for Italy? IMO not a jot. If I'm interested in his career then I look at the article about him.

My other concerns are stylistic and ancillary to the above but for the sake of completeness if domestic career information is going to be included in a table then it ought to be all of it, not just NRL appearances with any other competition relegated to a collapsed table.

Of course, I acknowledge the effort that went into compiling the data in the first place and it's data that needed compiling. It's simply I think it is in the wrong place.

I'm sorry if you think there was a failure to consult but there was a discussion started (not by me) at a central forum and after a week in which no opinions to the contrary were given, I acted on what I thought was the emerging consensus. Hi, thanks for your work on compiling the squads for the 2024 Pacific Championships. A decision was made last year on the WikiProject page that these tables shouldn't be used as they are too information heavy, bias to the NRL, and the amount of shorthand makes it near impossible for a casual reader to understand. As I pointed out last year, it is disingenuous to claim that a decision was made in the forum when just one other person actively agrees with your opinion. The number of page views to the 2023 page in October and November 2023 suggests than plenty of readers appreciated the additional information.

There is in inherent bias towards the NRL in the Pacific Championships given the number of players selected from NRL clubs. The only additional information that I have added is to include the number of NRL matches (for current club and in total).

Where the number of players selected from English/French clubs justifies it, I have included a Super League column. For instance, in Fiji's squad. And for others, like NZ, I have included a note.

The number of first tier club matches at a high level does have relevance, as collectively it indicates the experience and playing standard of the squads.

Once the tournament has concluded, it will have much less relevance, and could be removed them, but for now it is only two columns.

For similar reasons I have included the other representative matches column.

As I have used tooltips for acronyms and abbreviations, most readers not already familiar with similar shorthand used throughout Rugby League past and present media will understand/ To your point, however, I will add a key for the benefit of the casual reader.

One thing, I do acknowledge is that whilst the format I have used presents well on a laptop PC or tablet screen, when viewed on a smart phone it does necessitate turning from portrait to landscape for best viewing. But the same is true for the current layout of the 2023 squads page.

This leads me to the idea of having two pages that are both offered from the 2024 RLPC page:

1. ...squad statistics - which uses the format I have developed

2. ...squad lists - which simply lists the players' name and club

The 2nd version to cater for the smart phone viewer and casual viewer.

At the conclusion of the tournament we can look at the page views of the respective pages, and see whether the readers prefer the minimal information, or appreciate the additional information that I have spent many hours compiling.

That way we have an objective measurement, rather than the subjective option, where your opinion differs from mine.

If you object to having two pages, then an alternative is to use an external reference from the main 2024 RLPC page to the NRL and or League Unlimited squad pages that simply list the players names and clubs.

Thats simply not true, from re reading last year's discussion there were 5 out of the 6 users who participated that agreed the table needed to be trimmed.

Two pages isn't really an option as Wikipedia shouldn't have multiple pages on the same thing. Wikipedia shouldn't also be listing statistics that are tangental to the main purpose of the article in this case domestic appearance and points, other representation, etc (seeWP:INDISCRIMINATE).

Thank you for adding all those citations to the sources section of the article. However, the player register table is still not directly sourced. If, for example, I wanted to verify the player register facts of Natalie Gilmour, I would have to sift through all the refs in the sources section, which makes life difficult for the reader. The table needs either (a) a citation next to each item or (b) a citation or citations at the end of each line. That task might also show up where citations are missing, perhaps alerting other editors to help - so it's all to a good purpose. Thank you.

Hello,

If your concern is that you wish to validate the data published in the table then I am happy to meet virtually (via Teams, Zoom, etc.) and take you though my research, and collation of match data.

I've now added further sources to the page to cover more recent years. My attendance at the WODI cricket match at North Sydney Oval got in the way of completing that task yesterday.

To do as you ask would involve a lot of repetition. For Natalie Gilmour, would you want me to provide a citation for each of her 18 matches?

TheRugby League Records (RLR) website has a profile page which lists Natalie's World Cup matches, only. If that was an acceptable reference, it reduces the citations for her row to ten. That's one citation to her RLR profile (for her 9 World Cup matches), plus a citation for each of the nine matches played for England outside a World Cup.

That would then be repeated for each player in the table, apart from those that only played in World Cup matches. To my mind, that would be more confusing to a reader. It would also make a mess of the formatting.

If you do not wish to meet virtually, but desire further explanation, that's okay, I can provide more background via this medium.

Hi John. Thank you for your reply. I'm afraid that meeting virtually would not help, because sports articles and lists on WP are intended for the very large number of sports fans out there, and other interested parties, and it is not set up to provide verification in that way for each of those individuals. That is why we need verification of some sort in the tables. There are several possibilities which should help those readers:

• Move the relevant parts of the sources section into a new box forming the bottom part of the table, leaving (if appropriate) the rest of the sources to remain in the sources section.
• Provide at least a partial citation (i.e. a citation verifying one or more of the facts) somewhere on each row, leaving the sources section as it stands.
• Add a combination of the above ideas into the table, keeping the sources section as it is.

Please note that my request for citations in the table are not about me or my personal wish to see verification. It's about what we need to provide for our readers, i.e. the general public. Within that group, there are people who take our article subjects extremely seriously, including professionals of all kinds. They need to check facts as quickly and as conveniently as possible, and for that they need to know which citations will help them do that. Thank you for recognising that having a citation for every match that a player has played would be confusing.

Unfortunately, the player records for England Women on theRugby League Records website include World Cup matches, plus the two pair of games in 2023 and 2024. Consequently, most are incomplete. So, if a reference is to be included for each player in each row, the record referencing their squad selection for their first match is the best fit. Would you deem that as acceptable?

I intend to retain the direct access tables that are under theRugby League Records andEuropean Rugby League sub-headings. In a bid to do this succinctly, I've used just the flag and the year as the external link. An alternative, is to use two rows for each group of matches, with the country code as the link in the upper row and the year in the lower row. Such as this very rough example:

I had looked atList of England women's national rugby union players (to which I havenot contributed), which has a single reference to an external player archive. But, to your point, cricket lists referenceespncricinfo player pages, andList of Scotland women's international footballers references the SFA website, rather than a third-party website.

To add aRef column without messing up the desired format of displaying one line per row (i.e. minimising text wrap in cells), it would be best to narrow one or two of the existing columns.

The latter page provides an idea to reduce the width of the table, by using the accepted two-letter code for rugby leaguepositions. Unfortunately, thisrlp template doesn't currently offer a flag that when used would display the abbreviation rather than the full name - e.g.LF rather thanLoose forward. So, a key would be needed.

Another way to reduce the width to provide better formatting is to use the name override parameter in therlw template to display the country code PNG rather than the full name Papua New Guinea in theDebut - Opponent column.

So, if you're okay - as a reviewer - with these suggestions, I can implement the changes.

Thank you for going to such a great effort with this. My initial main object here was to try to keep the article stable, without other editors worrying about a citation-free table, then deleting bits or tagging. I can see that you are doing your best here, and that your improvements have certainly benefited the article. Following your improvements, I believe that it would be OK now, if you would

(1) write a note next to "Last updated: 11 January 2025" at the top of the table, saying something like "For sources, see Notes below the table". That should cover it, so long as

(2) the notes look as if they are part of the table, or at least associated with it.

If and when you can do that, then it should be OK to remove the tag at the top of the article. Well done for creating that very useful list, which must have required quite a lot of work to get it together. And thank you for your patience and understanding. The table just now updated to include a reference in each row.

There are two players where I don't have an online (direct or indirect) reference.

There are 3 or 4 where I have referenced their first match in an ERL report with a direct external link, but after seeing how it looks I will revert to a formal reference.

I am also aware that I have duplicate references, but I have a music gig to go to right now, so I will need to fix that tomorrow morning (Sydney time).

The reason that I added comments in the page was in an attempt to reach a new user-editor, @147.161.212.85 who has to date not created an account. Whilst their talk page records comments and suggestions from other editors, it appeared those had not been read. This assumption was based on the repetition by 147.161.212.85 of

1. Making edits without including references; and
2. Formatting errors made that would have been noticed if preview was being used.

In defence of 147.161.212.85, she/he has begun including references, just not for every edit. Specifically, for the page 2026 NRL Women's season and the 'Players released section and the St George Dragons. Hopefully you also read this comment and saw that I received a reply from 147.161.212.85, and I responded asking for a reference to be added to the Instagram post. Some errors were made in the attempt to capture those references, which I was happy to fix.

You may be able to answer this question. If a user is editing without an account, how are they prompted to read their talk page?

I could experiment myself to find out, but if you already know please share.
