Columbine High School massacre

[edit]

"Hey there,

I noticed that you've contributed a significant portion, around 30%, to theColumbine High School massacre, and I must say, it's really well done! I'm genuinely curious about what drew you to this topic and how you went about researching it. Thanks a bunch!"MajesticRZ (talk)18:33, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MajesticRZ: Kind of you to notice. It's a subject I could write a book on, and had to stop short of doing "original research." There is much of the usual story that requires revision. Reading "the 11k," the Jeffco/CNN CD, and playing video games from the time, seem the best way to research it. I think what drew me to the topic is the obvious absurdity of the usual story, and the absurdities being only countered with fanfiction from followers. For one, on the usual story the cafeteria bombs have failed at 11:17, and they move to "plan b" because of it, yet they are saying a bomb is about to explode the entire time in the library from 11:30 to 11:35, contradicting that story. They also toss pipe bombs at the bombs in order to detonate them, not just for fun, and that shows by itself how silly is the usual story. Tossing one was an easy alternative to moving to "plan B".Cake (talk)23:33, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Analytic philosophy

[edit]

I think you should send it toWP:peer review first, as there's more major issues. The biggest is that it's mostly a series of short sub-sections, some only a few sentences long. These should be summarized into bigger sections, such as "early history" or "later history", etc. There's also enough cross-pollination withContinental philosophy that both articles should have a section comparing them to each other, with a lot of the same wording and sourcing.Harizotoh9 (talk)04:10, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to try and flesh them out. I wouldn't oppose a section comparing/contrasting with continental philosophy.Cake (talk)04:14, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is probably enough book chapters and academic papers to make a full article on the subject contrasting the two as it frequently comes up. I'm just that I'm not up to it.Harizotoh9 (talk)08:42, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:1925 Alabama Crimson Tide football team photo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploadingFile:1925 Alabama Crimson Tide football team photo.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim ofnon-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails thefirst non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may haveno free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go tothe file description page and add the text{{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}}below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing<your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. Onthe file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking onthis link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per thenon-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at theMedia copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to thehistory of each individual page for details. Thanks,FastilyBot (talk)10:00, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Lee Nalley (ca 1949).jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploadingFile:Lee Nalley (ca 1949).jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required byWikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available fromWikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as animage copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance withsection F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at themedia copyright questions page. Thank you.Josh Milburn (talk)16:07, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citation question

[edit]

Hey there! I believe you were the first person to use this citation:

Patrick Garbin. "Bob McWhorter: "Everybody's All-American"". p. 6.

I found it onDick Jemison (who apparently was the person to say this quote originally), andseveral other pages, and it looks like you added it to Jemison's page. I'm not sure what you are referring to here. Patrick Garbin didn't seem to write anything with this title, and I can't find that quote ("When you mention football to an Athens fan its definition is Bob McWhorter, and vice-versa.") anywhere.

Do you happen to remember what you were citing when you added these claims? I would love to be able to fill out the citation to avoid this confusion in the future!Chew(VTE)01:38, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Good find. The citation should be Echoes of Georgia Football. Google books doesn't want to show me the page number. What made you look up McWhorter or Jemison? I've looked everywhere for that Southern baseball article Jemison wrote, mentioned in the bibliography. The SABR didn't have it.Cake (talk)08:04, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I looked it up and the book seems to be citing that from an1905Atlanta Constitution article (near the beginning). It probably would be better to use that since you're mentioning the quote.
I found the book on Amazon as well, it seems to bepage 39 in the hard cover.
As for looking them up, I was going through old citations and saw one of these had a CS1 error, so I was going to try and fix it, but didn't know enough about it to figure it out. Glad you still remembered where it came from 😅Chew(VTE)01:26, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Appreciate the help. I saw you also looked atJohnny Maxwell. I tried to get all the old leather helmet All Southerns.Cake (talk)13:28, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

[edit]

I today redirected1873 NYU Violets football team and other 1870s NYU season artiels, which you created, toNYU Violets football, 1873–1889. This is part of a broader effort about which I've opened a discussion atWikipedia talk:WikiProject College football#Multi-season vs. individual season articles. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.Cbl62 (talk)22:30, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The navbox (and assessment, etc) seems to be designed for single season articles, which was part of the motivation to break up those articles previously organized this way. I think that is my only real issue, and editing the navbox might be the easier solution. And I hope there is some cut off. The 1920s NYU articles are short but not like the 1870s where they might always be.Cake (talk)00:19, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you're ok with the merger. I do agree that there needs to be a cutoff. The 1920s saw an explosion in newspaper coverge of college football.Cbl62 (talk)02:06, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I know1928 NYU could be a full article. The standings templates don't seem to be as useful without individual season articles.Cake (talk)03:04, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't have any intention to combine NYU seasons for the 1920s. As I said above, the 1920s saw a big increase in newspaper coverage. As for navbox functionality, they still work to navigate the reader from one specific season to another. For example, on theNYU Violets football, 1873–1889, if you click on any of the years from 1873 to 1889, the redirect takes you to the specific season you click on. Likewise, the standings templates direct the viewer to the specific season requested.Cbl62 (talk)03:47, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reductio ad Absurdum

[edit]

You have made an edit for Reductio ad Absurdum describing it as "is the form of argument that attempts to establish the truth of a proposition by showing that assuming the proposition to be false leads to absurdity or a contradiction".

This is incorrect, according to the citations of that very phrase. The first citation, Brittanica, explicitly states that what you describe is but one single form of reductio ad absurdum - a form known as reductio ad impossibile. This is akin to changing the article for 'vehicle' so that it describes a car - one single form of a vehicle. There are other forms of vehicle, and there are other forms of reductio ad absurdum.~2025-34161-76 (talk)04:36, 17 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well it isn't incorrect, that's what philosophers mean by a reductio argument.Brittanica is not what one should use for a philosophical term. One should use a more proprietary dictionary like the Stanford Encyclopedia. But I appreciate you letting me know the citations need to be brushed up, if one wants to keep the text.Cake (talk)04:43, 17 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
