Stone City

[edit]

Thanks for your work on the estate page: some information still wasn't cited, but that was the last sentence. Since we don't need the touristy kind of information that it provided, I simply removed it.

A few things, by the way (forgive me if you already know these!): (1) the intro should have the title of the articlebolded, and it shouldn't have a link. That's why I moved the link to Green himself. (2) Links in the See also section really should only be to things that aren't linked elsewhere in the article. For that reason I removed the links to Green and to Stone City but left the NRHP in Jones County link. (3) It's best to add "United States" to the location, as well as the community and the state, since this is a global encyclopedia.

Please don't take this as patronising: I simply want to help you do better, and anyway I've never worked with you except with Jones County/Stone City matters, so I don't know how much good you're capable of :-)Nyttend (talk)13:36, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you provide a source forFile:Map of Stone City.jpg? Did you make it, or did you get it from somewhere?Nyttend (talk)16:46, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: File:Red Stone.JPG

[edit]

File:Red Stone.JPG is now available onWikimedia Commons asCommons:File:Red Stone.JPG. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:Red Stone.JPG]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. National Register of Historic Places listings in Marshall County, Iowa

[edit]

How do you know that it's on the list? Searching for "church" athttp://nrhp.focus.nps.gov, the official NR database, produces no results, and the same is true of a search for "scientist". If we can prove that a site was listed at one time and has never been removed, we include it even if it's been destroyed; however, we need to be able to prove that it's been listed.Nyttend (talk)12:39, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't trust that website. It presents itself as the official website, but it's not at all, and it's several years out of date. Looking through the database more clearly, it turns out that the church was once listed on the Register, but it was removed more than a decade ago. I'll add a note saying that it was formerly listed; thanks.Nyttend (talk)17:05, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It turns out that there's an article on it —First Church of Christ, Scientist (Marshalltown, Iowa).Nyttend (talk)17:09, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What needs to be done?Nyttend (talk)17:20, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen both parts of this split discussion here and atUser talk:Nyttend. Just to corroborate what Nyttend has said, the www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com website, which i refer to as "NRHP.COM" is a private website mostly echoing the public domain NRIS database. However, its programmer(s) misunderstood some of the database's info, and, among other errors, it routinely shows as NRHP-listed on a given date, any property that was actuallyde-listed or had some other status change on that date. So Nyttend and i and other NRHP editors prefer to use theNRIS tools' NRHP infobox generator interface provided byUser:Elkman. That interface shows "listing code is DR" for this item. DR means "DATE RECEIVED/PENDING NOMINATION" so that indicates it is not NRHP-listed per the database, though, oddly, per key to those codes atwp:NRHPhelp. It should show "RN" for removed from Register, I would think, but anyhow the main thing is that its status is that it is not currently listed.Oops, i was looking at entry for a different Iowa church of this name; the code is in fact RN for this one. Not sure if this helps, just corroborating. --doncram (talk)18:03, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kep: I took about 5 or 6 total, most are crummy, during a drive-thru after Pumpkin Fest at Anamosa. The Mrs. tolerates my hobby, but I don't dare push my luck when she and our son are in the car. Marshalltown edits

[edit]

Hi, I started to patrol all the communities of Iowa in early/mid December, and noticed you adding many contributions to Stone City and Marshalltown. Until today I was in complete agreement with your edits. Today you had added information toMarshalltown, Iowa which is great. One of the changes was to what is now called the Notable people section. You somehow was unaware of the message that was placed beside the header in the Wiki edit code stating:

<!--consensus reached to standardize this heading per WikiProject Cities/US Guideline-->

You can see this atWikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline and read the several discussions starting in Sept 2007 atWikipedia talk:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline. I undid the Notable natives back to Notable people.

In your work with the section Education I refer you to read the officialWikipedia:Manual of Style#Bulleted and numbered lists and/or the easier to understand but unofficialUser:Tony1/Beginners' guide to the Manual of Style which I find very helpful. In the Sister cities section you deleted the sister cities but left the rest. Do you have definitive proof that the information was incorrect and there is no sister cities for Marshalltown? I see you have been active almost daily, therefore I will give it a week before I undo this edits giving you the opportunity to rework these yourself.

I also am taking this opportunity to invite you again to visitWikipedia:WikiProject Iowa/Communities which I and others from Project Iowa are building as a guideline for improving the cities, townships, counties and other communities in the state of Iowa.
--RifeIdeas Talk23:45, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My bad about the sister city deleting, I see you just made them a bulleted list from a prose sentence. Looking at other articles to get ideas is a good idea as long as they are GA (Good Article) or FA (Featured Article) Class. A good example would beGrand Forks, North Dakota, notice the gold star at the top right corner of the article - that is the mark of an FA article. If you read a published book encyclopedia you would rarely see any bulleted lists. I too made (and still make) "mistakes" when it comes to editing but as long as you/we are willing to improve our editing skills Wikipedia will only get better. As far as finding sources for the sister cities newspapers are just fine, of course online "permanent" sources are preferred. Wiki MOS for references can be found atWP:NOTES. I prefer to use the cite templatesWP:CITET which covers using references from the web to video games including newspapers. I have to admit I also changed Notable people to Notable Natives and residents thinking it was better until it was pointed out to me that there was a guideline that had been laid out though consensus of editors who have been working on Wikipedia for a while. In regards to deleting the people not meeting the criteria I say we give people some time to make articles (two months I think) that is why there is a date hidden in the code (2010/12/13) of when I separated out the list. I see you joined Communities, I just wanted to say thank you and ask you if the page is easy to understand? A new set of eyes looking at any article or project can see things that the original writer just does not see (that is why they have copy editors for books). There is more to come as I get the time. Currently I am working on a new section to explain about the coordinates used because we learned we were not doing them correctly in new township articles being made.

Tweak "Mosques in the Ukraine" template?

[edit]

Greetings, your template "Mosques in the Ukraine" has some category encoded that makes every article its in appear inCategory:Islam in the Ukraine. This causes redundancies, asCategory:Mosques in the Ukraine is itself already under said cat. Can you tweak that to allow the mosques themselves to show up just in the "Mosques in the Ukraine" category?MatthewVanitas (talk)17:36, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Google satellite view

[edit]

You can upload Google satellite screenshots to a few Wikimedia websites, including the English Wikipedia, but only a few: Google satellite images are copyrighted and not freely licensed, so you may only upload them under claims of fair use, and most Wikimedia websites do not accept claims of fair use. Moreover, you'll find it extremely hard to find a situation in which you could properly claim fair use of a Google satellite image — I suppose that it would be reasonable to upload such an image for the "Satellite view" section ofGoogle Maps, but any other use would have almost no chance of passing the fair use criteria.Nyttend (talk)03:30, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
