Aims

After discussion atWikipedia talk:WikiProject Yorkshire in April 2008.

Specific aims for the project are:-

  • To complete tagging and assessment of all Yorkshire related articles (See below)
  • To recruit more active editors (See Member News)
  • To bring our top level articleYorkshire up toFeatured article status
  • To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at leastGood article status
  • To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive (See this month's feature below)
  • To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members

and apropos of the above a2010 New Year article improvement drive/collaboration is being organised.

Priority Articles

Thetop priority articles that have been identified to date are as follows -

The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

2011 Census

TheOffice for National Statistics have now published the detailed information from the2011 Census for wards and parishes. The data can be searched for on their web sitehere. Would be good to get the information added to all of the relevant articles but this is a big job. If the article already has the 2001 census figures then it may be worth retaining these, in the text of the article, for comparison purposes.

WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project

The February 2013 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no further suggestions from the project talk page.

Please nominate future articles for improvement atWikipedia talk:WikiProject Yorkshire.

Please bear in mind...

The project is subscribed to aclean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.

  • Monitoring is essential
Use thewatchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
  • Moves
Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR.

List of companies in the nuclear sector

Hi, Gilderien. Yourrecent edit of theList of companies in the nuclear sector is somehow misleading. First, it was not only disambiguation but also re-arrangement and taking account the size, also removal of some information, Second, removal of 1,375 bites is certainly not a minor edit (except in the case of vandalism). Could you please clarify what was actually removed? Thank you.Beagel (talk)14:14, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

I was using the tool DAB solver, through which I marked it as a minor edit as there was no actual content removed, as perWP:MINOR, only changing a link and some of the template syntax (this can be verified easily as both revisions contain exactly 3,458 words of content). These changes were automatically applied by the application in order to update it to the HTML5 specifications, and only affect the rendering and ease of editing of content, and not the content itself and thus was a minor edit. So to answer your question directly, nothing was removed, only rearranged and syntax updated. Thanks for bringing this to my attention though, as making me consider how I am marking my edits cannot be a bad thing.--GilderienChat|List of good deeds14:31, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. The issue was that the edit history shows that the size of the article was decreased by 1,375 bites and due to re-arrangements it was very hard to say if this was due to formatting or removal of the content. Thank you for clarifying this.Beagel (talk)14:39, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. ColoradoSturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. LondonMiyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South WalesCasliber (submissions), due in no small part toCanis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission withAlaskaKeilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, acurious contribution has been offered byBritish EmpireThe C of E (submissions): did you know that there is aShit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees theWikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid thewomen's history WikiProject to coincide withWomen's History Month andInternational Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has ato-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is anan effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the reviewonly. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it onWikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome onWikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email.

  • To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members

and apropos of the above a2010 New Year article improvement drive/collaboration is being organised.

Priority Articles

Thetop priority articles that have been identified to date are as follows -

The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

Interwiki links

There has been a major change this month to the way that interwiki links are handled with the introduction ofWikidata. Wikidata is a central place to record meta-data about an article and the initial phase was rolled out this month to cater for interwiki links. The links in the language area are served from this project and can be edited by use of the "edit links" icon at the bottom of the list. These links in articles are now redundant but if present override the information supplied by wikidata. Check each of the links to ensure that they exist and are correct on wikidata before removing the entry from an article. BOTs are in the process of removing these links from articles but will leave behind missing or conflicting links for someone to investigate and fix appropriately.

Be aware that when moving articles to change the destination for the en interwiki link on wikidata to point to the new article location. The redirect will normally take care of thisbut if the original name is reused for a different article then other wikis will be pointing to an incorrect location.

Wikidate also does not handle section links in the interwiki link so these must remain as part of the article code.

Watchlists have been changed to give an extra option to Show/Hide changes to wikidata entries for articles on the watchlist.
