I tend to agree with your edit summary on the AfD, but I did want to mention thatWP:ATTACK articles are subject to deletion when there is no previous version to which one can revert.Coretheapple (talk)17:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for sharing that! It's really sad when BLPs are abused for ATTACKs. I may write something about that later. I believe that anything that has to do with Israel and/or Palestine is over-politicized. When you try to de-politicize you also get attacked. I comment on about 95% of the Israel deletion queue that doesn't deal with the Israel-Palestine conflict. When it does, maybe 60%?gidonb (talk)17:52, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The entire area is a mess, and unfortunately due to the high volume of hostility and tendentiousness it tends to drive away editors, leaving only the true believers. Anyway, I was just interested by your edit summary and wanted to note that notability is not always the only criteria in AfDs.Coretheapple (talk)17:54, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Otterbeen

[edit]

Hi Gidonb. Not sure if you got the ping (at the AFD), but based on your ability to find sources for Belgian athleteGeorges Demulder (specifically with BelgicaPress), I was wondering if you could determine if there's any significant coverage forJoseph Otterbeen (at AFD). Thanks.BeanieFan11 (talk)02:45, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I saw the debate, asUser:Habst had tagged me, yet would be more hesitant to decide that Otterbeen was notable. Here, too, I have no access to articles. Let's assume that I accept that one article supports notability based on the title. Consistent with that logic, I would also need to reject the rest as not supporting notability as one can't have it both ways. Then Demulder and Otterbeen have one article. Yet, for Demulder it is more likely that additional notability-supporting sources exist. Soccer is better covered than athletics and Demulder played at the highest level. Look at the stats.User:Habst said that the number of sources for Otterbeen is greater than 150. It isn't.It's 24. That's a third of Demulder. Plus Demulder also played in Portugal.gidonb (talk)03:52, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BeanieFan11, I looked at the article and it is SIGCOV as I assumed. Still, I am unsure that I support keeping. I have supported the deletion without prejudice of such extreme stubs in the past. Also, I was pinged there and addressed here. I will sit this one out for now.gidonb (talk)01:43, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BeanieFan11, Another reason why I did not get into this is that you called upon me as your expert witness. That's a real honor. The debate went well for the keep-sayers and my intervention would not have helped this case. I hope you will consider me again another time!gidonb (talk)12:58, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:List of Belgians

[edit]

You nominatedTalk:List of Belgians for deletion atWP:MFD. It looks like you meant to nominate the list article for deletion. I've procedurally closed the MFD. You will need to nominate the article atWP:AFD. --Whpq (talk)18:12, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. The system suggested that this belongs in MFD, not in AFD. I should have overruled the system.gidonb (talk)21:11, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for your work onRaphaël van Praag, which was created by me. By the way, could you do the same with fellow Dutch refereeTheo van Zwieteren. I would really appreciate it.

Kind regards.Barr Theo (talk)01:30, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiBarr Theo! I can take a look. I did create the article onVolharding Olympia Combinatie, the club whereTheo van Zwieteren played.gidonb (talk)03:23, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Van Zwieteren playing for VOC? That's a surprise. You won't find that in the source given. A referee who's a FIFA member? A referee isn't a Football Association! Nowadays international referees are appointed by FIFA and receive a badge from FIFA, but when Van Zwieteren was a referee, the teams would ask a neutral Football Association to provide a referee.Cattivi (talk)19:56, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
HiCattivi, thanks for bringing a concern to my attention. I have not yet verified the information in the article. When I mentioned "the club whereTheo van Zwieteren played," I was quoting from our article, which is not a reliable source for itself. This quote is just for the discussion here. I will check Delpher to ensure this information is accurate. BTW, the claim was that he was footballer before he became a referee. Not alongside.gidonb (talk)22:25, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
He was (almost) a lifelong member of Sparta. He never played for the first team. It will be hard to prove he was a footballer. When you do a bit of research you will find that he trained the athletes for a while. Sparta was not exclusively a football club. He was also a member of the board.[1] I'm not sure everything in this article is correct. (didn't he move to Hamburg in 1925?), but I don't see any major errors.Cattivi (talk)08:20, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great find,Cattivi! Searching Delpher, I did not find a special connection with VOC. As a referee in Rotterdam, he officiated their games but not more than other clubs in the region. I did see a connection with Sparta, he gets mentioned and depicted in their magazine, and no special positions, so membership would make sense. I also saw that he engaged in field tennis. Sparta engaged in tennis from 1921 to 1944.gidonb (talk)09:59, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And in Germany he was a referee as well[2]. You don't need to be German to be a referee in Germany. Van Praag was a referee in Belgium long before he became a Belgian citizen. Referees are not appointed to lead games of their own club. When they do, it's usually because the scheduled referee didn't show up. (that happened a lot, trains not running, illness, etc.)Cattivi (talk)10:20, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Teddy Scholten and Theo van Zwieteren are related, but they are distant relatives. Jan Swietring born 1762 in Raesfeld is the most recent shared ancestor. Why even mention this?Cattivi (talk)14:35, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see a lot of talking, but no action! All of the sources that are floating around here must be added to Zwieteren's page as soon as possible.
My 0% deletion ratio is at stake! I have created 830 pages, and NONE of them was ever deleted, and I intend to keep it that way!
Kind regards.Barr Theo (talk)00:19, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The article was kept even though you supported draftifying. How is that for a "a lot of talking, but no action"?gidonb (talk)18:42, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Bilateral Iran article forks

You may interested inparticipating in this discussion similar to the Iran-Israel non-political relations Afd from June. We have now a few more forks over Iran-U.S. relations.WikiCleanerMan (talk)22:13, 6 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know,WikiCleanerMan! I might skip this one. I try to focus on AfD items related to Israel and the Netherlands, given my regional expertise. Belgium as well, to some extent. Though I do often react, I do not prioritize Middle Eastern conflict articles, as involvement can lead to long debates and being framed one way or another. Even off Wikipedia.[3] That's also why I'm less likely to broaden my scope in that area. Also, as you correctly point out in the discussion, we have plenty of such texts. When evaluating I look at what can reasonably be kept, even though I would rather have people more motivated to grow and improve content of all times, places, and domains. If anything, I prefer to contribute to more eclectic, and less political topics. I have been looking more at the Judaism queue lately and am also a member of WikiProject Ethiopia, though not very active. Mostly on demand.gidonb (talk)03:40, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Ilana Schlesinger

[edit]

Hi Gidonb,

I was wondering if you'd help me with this BLP of a friend of mine. With anh-index of 26, she isn't exactly aWP:NPROF shoo-in, but with a recent paper published in the NEJM, and the groundbreaking surgical technique she invented cited in over 2,000 papers and winning awards, this may be a marginal case. I've placed a COI notice on the draft Talk page, and touched up the refs and infobox, but I'd really prefer someone who doesn't have a COI take a look at it and see if it's worth translating and improving. Not to mention that you have far more experience than I do at writing BLPs. Any help would be much appreciated!Owen×21:51, 7 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
