Die Fliege

We moved from2024 to2025, with new calendar pictures and new music. The topic of Bach's chorale cantatas will keep me busy until 25 March, and then I want to focus on performances more generally, in history and in my experience. You can follow my daily stories,{{User Gerda Arendt/Top}}, often with an image and something to listen to: let's stay inspired and connected. --Gerda Arendt (talk)05:57, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ongoing efforts regard locations that played a role in my life, recent deaths, music heard and sung, composers, gardens. Watch my user page for articles, done in collaboration. Compare2024 for the amazing number of users who began and expanded articles. Thanks also to reviewers, and I do plan to review more and write less, and in writing, focus more on quality than the little daily article.

2025 calender pics and musical eventsbegin here, and the 2025 diary of my own pictures of places, songs, food, flowers ishere, - just watch those lists if you are interested.

My talk goes like this: on top there's the"story" related to the day. Below are three or more boxes, often one for people remembered and others for musical experiences, performing or listening. In these boxes, topics related to the top story and topics featured on the Main page appear bold. Right here you see theimage of the month with songs of the month, typically related tofriends who gave them to me, on their birthdays or when meeting them. I archive from time. --Gerda Arendt (talk)06:25, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

YourGA nomination ofLiebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8

[edit]

The articleLiebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8 you nominated as agood article has been placed on hold. The article is close to meeting thegood article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. SeeTalk:Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8 andTalk:Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8/GA1 for issues which need to be addressed.Message delivered byChristieBot, on behalf ofAza24 --Aza24 (talk)00:24, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Aza24, thank you for the thorough review. I understand that in order to make Bach's chorale cantatas a good topic, this cantata - as part of it - has to be a good article, and I am willing to put work into it to make it so. However, right now I'm working simultaneously on several others with the same goal, and they require less work. I see me getting to serious changes for BWV 8 after the others, which will be in February. (The only one written later, BWV 1, is already a FA.) I'll make small changes now, perhaps today, but will then have to ask if the nom should remain open for longer or be closed and started over when I'm ready. Y'all: any help with this one and the others - making changes or reviewing - is welcome, see above,#calling for collaboration. --Gerda Arendt (talk)08:06, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

7 March 2025, Ravel’s 150th anniversary

[edit]

Hi! I’ve seen you around a couple of times from some discussions that you have had with others and noticed that you love classical music! I’d thought that I would share with you my love forMaurice Ravel (my number one favorite composer for several years). I listened to several concerts this year dedicated to his 150th anniversary: pieces includedLa valse,Boléro,Introduction and Allegro, etc., all very wonderful pieces.Tfess up?or down?01:01, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I thought of it and brought him to the main page at least by mentioning his name. I will write my story about one of his pieces,Trois Chansons (Ravel), created on 7 March 2019. (I had meant to use the Introduction and Allegro, in which I was involved a bit in 2011.) I want to create a new article on the occasion,Tout est lumière. Nice to meet you and your love! --Gerda Arendt (talk)06:32, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for responding! Trois Chansons? I’ll need to check that out, haha. And I’ve seen you around on user talk pages sharing some works of music, etc., so that was how I found out about you. Very sweet of you! (I was into Wikipedia editing for only 5-6 years so I’m a little bit of a newbie.)Tfess up?or down?14:22, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead, check out. When I came across the Trois Chansons I was intrigued by his response to war: write something light, in your tradition, strengthening identity. I always list the articles I look at on my user page, - feel free to add and correct. - Below: almost too much of a good thing, a conductor and five other composers to be celeebrated ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)14:44, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again Gerda, I wanted to go back to this little discussion that we had about Ravel about 8 months prior. I'm currently taking a musicology class, and the professor touched base on medieval and Renaissance music (composers such as Josquin des Prez, Hildegard, and Machaut), including chansons. For one of the assignments, I had to go and find a vocal work that I loved. I revisited and chose Trois Chansons solely because of this discussion that we had and discovered the full magic that Ravel put in this composition. (I always seem to have that habit - I don't discover the full magic of a piece until much later!) In fact I loved it so much that I would randomly belt out some of the words in that song in my room; my favorite is "Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis" because of the reference to the French flag and because of its more solemn nature, words, and key that the chanson is in (F minor is one of my most favorite keys, and I feel blessed that Ravel wrote this chanson in that key). I thank you deeply for planting the seed for introducing me to this composition. Merci!
"Mon ami z'il est a la guerre..."Tfess up?or down?23:25, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for a profound note, and I'm happy I left this on my talk, while most gets archived soon. Merci! --Gerda Arendt (talk)07:24, 2 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt:This page lists the most edited pages on the English Wikipedia. With 20,839 edits, your user pageUser:Gerda Arendt is currently the most edited user page that is not a sub page (likeUser:AmandaNP/UAA/Time) or a redirect. Youbroke that record, previously held byUser:Orenburg1, a while back, during the week from 9-16 August, 2023. However, I only now got around to updating the list onWP:Wikipedia records, which is when I noticed the change.Renerpho (talk)09:15, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder how I "broke a record" that was at 18,xxx, making only a few edits each day and now at 20.xxx - however, I don't care much about records anyway. I'm happy that 99% of edits are article-related. --Gerda Arendt (talk)09:23, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you to you andMartin for your edits onStuart Burrows. I happened to have the BBC News page open at the time they published the article on his death, and I was surprised to be in time to be the person to update the article. It's just being familar with the sometimes strange language of FA land. For years here, I didn't even know what "featured article" should mean, and when I understood, I thought it's misnamed ;) - best you write one, but I recommend take an less complex topic for the first one. Cellist Christoph Richter

[edit]

Gerda, I noticed that our article onChristoph Richter is about a mayor. German wikipedia hasChristoph Richter (cellist) who is principal cellist of theNDR Symphony Orchestra and appears to havea pretty significant solo career internationally. Thought I might put in a plug to encourage an article since you've written on German cellists previously. Thanks also for the highlight onMárta Kurtág. GA backlog drive

[edit]

Hi Gerda! Thanks for nominating seven articles for GA. I was wondering if you'd be interested in joining theongoing GA backlog drive? The backlog drives are most motivating when we've got the critical mass to make a difference in the backlog, and I noticed you've never reviewed an article, despite your ample experience. Even a single review helps. Thanks :).—Femke 🐦 (talk)07:31, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, but I have not reviewed GAs because I'm not a native speaker and am not confidently review the prose quality. I comment on FACs because there I don't have full responsibility. --Gerda Arendt (talk)07:36, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As a fellow non-native speaker: don't undersell yourself. A non-native speaker might miss some minor mistake somewhere, but you will likely be better at spotting text that's too difficult to understand. For instance, if an article overusesidiomatic language. You can try it out once, and ask for feedback atWikipedia:Good article mentorship if you're not quite confident. Reviews don't have to be perfect.—Femke 🐦 (talk)07:50, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Over night, I had two ideas for expanding, but ... --Gerda Arendt (talk)09:49, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All that's great, but you've consumed many more hours of reviewer time than you given back. There's a reason why the backlog at GAN has nearly doubled in from the 400-500 that it averaged over decades to 900+. If you want timely reviews of your own articles, you should start reviewing those of others. People do notice the balance between nominations and reviews.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk)10:22, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

TFA

[edit]

Today:Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79, "a church cantata by J. S. Bach for Reformation Day, first performed on 31 October 1725. It would be great to have the article in best shape for the anniversary, ideally good enough for TFA that day. The last cantatas to become FA wereWie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1, in 2021, andEaster Oratorio earlier this year. Bach composed two major cantatas for the occasion, the famous one beingEin feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80, featuring the famous hymn, with a rather unclear history of versions and performances, and this one with music Bach would reuse in later masses. A unique feature is that Bach used festive horns and drums not only in the opening, but also in the two chorales, achieving a unity of sound quite different from earlier cantatas." - The wish for TFA came true. Please check what is different forUnser Mund sei voll Lachens, BWV 110, and comment in the peer review. --Gerda Arendt (talk)07:42, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Brass for November

[edit]

This late Autumn I've been listening to hours ofHakan Hardenberger (such ashis variations on a theme from "Norma") and other trumpet players (I've hadKjetil Bjerkestrand'sFanfare on loop some days). For some reason brass instruments inspire the deepest optimism in me, which is something I find I need when winter begins to arrive as it is doing now. Shame I never picked up a brass instrument (I'm a blues guitar and piano player by training). I hope autumn's been a time of profound warmth and joy for you and wish you the same positivity this winter.

Someone looking for online opera clubs/podcasts in English or German for their elderly mother

[edit]

Hey Gerda, I don't think you're on Mastodon, but do you (or any of your talk page stalkers) have any quick links/tips/ideas I could pass on relating tothis post looking for opera resources, per the subject line? I've mentioned that I've asked you there; hope that's OK. Thanks!Graham87 (talk)07:54, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The best person to ask for opera resources is4meter4. I write about people more than operas, and look atGroßes Sängerlexikon andBayreuth Festival (which is copied from the other but also has their individual performances). TheMetropolitan Opera has an excellent archive. You might look at a given singer (Jessye Norman,Donald McIntyre), and operas (Jahrhundertring) and look at sources there. - I'm travelling, no time today, haven't even written my story yet ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)08:12, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, kk, fair enough.Graham87 (talk)— Precedingundated comment added08:37, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There are many excellent complete operas on video on youtube. --Gerda Arendt (talk)08:51, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that there are! I'll mention that if no-one else has.Graham87 (talk)11:03, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Graham87: Since I was pinged, I have a few suggestions. First, I would suggest starting with a local opera company. If the person's goal is to help their mother remain socially connected, I would try and take her to a local opera production(s). They may also have a boosters club with activities for fundraising around opera, or a lecture series, and/or other social activities for opera lovers throughout the year. Most opera companies have a community outreach and/or education director and they could actually call and speak with this person. I would imagine this person would have a treasure trove of resources for the local community and events planned because that is their job! This could provide resources for learning about and engaging with opera and provide a social outlet for their mom locally that would be very enriching. Second, many opera companies like the Royal Opera House and the Met have live operas filmed for the big screen. If finances are tight and distance is an issue, these can often provide access to opera through your local movie theatre. It's not as great as going to a truly live performance but it is better than watching one at home on a small screen, and could be a special event to share with friends and family. Third, some opera companies have "opera clubs" where people get together and go to the opera and then discuss it, etc. For an opera lover this could be appealing. (Without knowing where this person lives I can't be more specific). Additionally, many universities have opera departments. University opera productions could be another way to connect with the art form locally. These are general ideas. If I were speaking with this person more directly I might have more useful info if I knew A. Where they lived B. What sort of interests their mother had. Opera is a wide area and I could get very specific if I knew what sorts of composers, operas, singers, etc. this person wanted to explore. YouTube is of course a great place to explore. There are so many wonderful full length opera recordings (I suggest watching ones with English or German subtitles). There are also documentaries such as[1],[2],[3],[4],[5] etc. Best wishes.4meter4 (talk)15:01, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@4meter4: Wow, thanks very much for your detailed message; all great suggestions!Graham87 (talk)15:49, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Graham87: You are welcome. I'm not a podcast kind of guy, but here is a list of opera related podcasts:https://podcast.feedspot.com/opera_podcasts/ Best.4meter4 (talk)16:07, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@4meter4: Cool; will pass that on also. The OP responded withheartfelt thanks. Should I try to get you two in contact, somehow?Graham87 (talk)16:15, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
He said the podcast link alone will keep them satisfied for a while, so there's no need for a followup for now.Graham87 (talk)16:36, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow, from the podcast list, I noticed that there was a mention of the Australian early opera companyPinchgut Opera, whoseYoutube channel has just added a lot of interesting full-length concerts, including Monteverdi's Vespers. I hope these links work outside Australia; on a quick check, they should.Graham87 (talk)16:33, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, both. The youtubes work in Germany, I tookMembra Jesu Nostri for a sample, - too tired for more. --Gerda Arendt (talk)23:22, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear. That was a lovely concert; I remember hearing it on ABC Classic. I was doing similar sampling earlier with theMesse de minuit pour Noël.Graham87 (talk)12:07, 21 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

BWV 1178 & 1179

[edit]

Hi Gerda! I don't think we've met yet, but I've noticed your wonderful musical contributions (especially Bach-related). You probably already know, but recently two new pieceswere added to theBWV. Have you taken a listen yet? As a mostly casual listener to Bach & Baroque pieces in general, I find the worksfascinating, but was wondering if you had any insights here :). All the best,Staraction (talk |contribs)05:16, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

not yet, there was this long opera (see a bit above), but I will --Gerda Arendt (talk)06:50, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Gerda is here a similiar module outdated like the veraltet Baustein in de,wiki?Symposiarch (talk)11:07, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I don't know the German one. I looked upTemplate:Dated (assuming that might be it but it isn't) and found there that we have three different templates here. Pick. Thank you for the thanks formy story with the gorgeous pic, smiling so many times looking at the details. Frightful condition of Template:Baroque music

[edit]

Can I ask you to spend a few minutes cleaning upTemplate:Baroque music? I saw some names being added recently and I was thinking that these composers were not primarily known for the galant style.

This area of music is not my forte, pun intended.Binksternet (talk)05:28, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nice pun ;) - I confess that I never looked at that template. It's very, very detailed, and if that's the idea, the recent additions fit. I even added an item. Perhaps consultAza24 or project Classical music, who may know better. --Gerda Arendt (talk)08:37, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
