1980 United States census

[edit]

The US census pages for 1990, 2000, and 2010 all have a subheading on "Reapportionment" which very nicely gives the changes in Congressional seats as a result of the census. This is missing for 1980 (I have not checked earlier census entries) and that is a failing. Could someone knowledgeable please add this information (in the same format as for, e.g., 1990) for 1980 (and earlier if those are missing)?Jtelser (talk)03:11, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A cup of tea for you!

[edit]
Thanks for your amazing suggestions! I stay up late editing, and work really, really hard to do a good job on these, but unfortunately, thanks mostly to the stifling efforts of ONE editor. I will likely have to quit that project. I simply will be threatened with a block if I continue, so I will likely have to stop. People are very protective of the towns and cities in their watchlists... even if I am only trying to attain consensus. Happy to discuss further though tomorrow! Going to sleep for now.Th78blue (They/Them/Their •talk)07:36, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly encourage you to continue. I've been where you are and have been very frustrated by single editors who "defend their territory". Just move on and go do your work somewhere else. If adding the dates is what's causing frustration, just keep editing without adding the dates. Don't let one editor ruin something you are enjoying. I'll take a look at your work in the days to come and see if this editor is oversteping. If they threaten you with a block simply forGood Faith edits, then I will come to your defense. --Dkriegls(talk to me!)08:34, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Your words of encouragement have swayed me into action and I am back at it. This time I am still adding the dates (as that is my personal favorite thing to do, and I DO feel that it IS considered a value add by many, just not this one editor). Thanks for your feedback and support. It makes the encyclopedia a more enjoyable place to be and to learn about the world. Also, I can't fault this one editor all that much, they have made me a better editor by pushing me to ensure that I am only adding well sourced/cited birth dates etc.Th78blue (They/Them/Their •talk)15:54, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Another opportunity for consensus

[edit]

Hello Dkriegls,

I am actively working towards another instance of consensus building. Boy is it difficult! Anyway, would love your input on one where I am asking the community to support a measure to allow for me (and anyone) to add a single like of white space after each header in a section or sub-section of all articles. That makes it a lot easier for me to see/read/edit articles that are of interest to me (mostly notable people lists and towns and cities across the USA and the globe), and while doing this I usually look for typos and other minor grammatical errors across pages. The consensus building is currently ongoing here, if you'd like to voice your comment:Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#Spacing RfC. Thank you.Th78blue (talk)18:59, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll take a look!Dkriegls(talk to me!)21:52, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I apologize but I actually teach my computer coding students not to add excessive spacing in line code (for a variety of reasons). Now, I'm my teaching to industry standards but this is Wikipedia; where many non-coders engage with the code. So, to that end, my position is neutral on the matter and I choose not to comment either for or against. I do empathize with your position but I hope you understand.Dkriegls(talk to me!)23:31, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rejuvenate WikiProject Skepticism

[edit]

Hello - my name is Susan Gerbic (Sgerbic) and I'm writing to you because at some point you joinedWikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism. This might have been months ago - or even years ago. With the best of intentions the project was created years ago, and sadly like many WikiProjects has started to go dormant. A group of us are attempting to revitalize the Skepticism project, already we have begun to clean up the main page and I've just redone the participant page. No one is in charge of this project, it is member directed, which might have been the reason it almost went dormant. We are attempting to bring back conversations on thetalk page and have two subprojects as well, in the hopes that it might spark involvement and a way of getting to know each other better. One was created several years ago but is very well organized and a lot of progress was made,Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skeptical organisations in Europe. The other I created a couple weeks ago, it is very simple and has a silly nameWikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skepticism Stub Sub-Project Project (SSSPP). This sub-project runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022. We are attempting to rewrite skepticism stubs and add them to this list. As you can see we have already made progress.

The reason I'm writing to you now is because we would love to have you come back to the project and become involved, either by working on one of the sub-projects, proposing your own (and managing it), or just hanging out on the talk page getting to know the other editors and maybe donate some of your wisdom to some of the conversations. As I said, no one is in charge, so if you have something in mind you would like to see done, please suggest it on the talk page and hopefully others will agree. Please add the project to your watchlist, update your personal user page showing you are a proud member of WikiProject Skepticism. And DIVE in, this is what the work list looks like[1] frightening at first glance, but we have already started chipping away at it.

TheWikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Participants page has gone though a giant change - you may want to update your information. And of course if this project no longer interests you, please remove your name from the participant list, we would hate to see you go, but completely understand.

Thank you for your time, I hope to edit with you in the future.Sgerbic (talk)06:58, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Missed your message

[edit]

Good day! I just now noticed your message to me about the two articles on your parents. Not sure what happened at that time, maybe I was too busy. Also not sure if I could have been of any help. But I do like to say that I am glad you're still around! Setbacks happen on Wikipedia, and editing with a COI, which I do not discourage but practise myself, requires a particularly thick skin. Keep it up! --Pgallert (talk)18:19, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Couples Psych Articles

[edit]

Hello,

I found you through your Don Baucom page. I'm a couples psychology graduate student - I've done some Wikipedia editing in the past, and was hoping to supplement the Couples and Relationship Psychology pages during my time in graduate school. There are a lot of concepts and notable people within the field that are not currently represented on Wikipedia.

As part of my work in graduate school, I was paid to see about getting Wikipedia pages for two of the affiliates of our lab - Howard Markman and Scott Stanley. Both are international experts in this realm, and worked together to develop the most-used relationship education program (PREP). However, neither of them, nor PREP, has a Wikipedia page.

As much as I would love to create and edit pages for these two and the PREP program, there are COI issues involved with my being a graduate researcher in their lab. I've been reading through the COI pages and trying to figure out what options there are. I think these pages would represent a useful inclusion, and satisfy notability requirements. But I want to make sure that I'm proceeding ethically, and at this point I believe that means talking to a senior editor.

Thank you for your time,

Hello. You're invited to participate inThe World Destubathon. We're aiming to destub a lot of articles and also improve longer stale articles. It commenced yesterday on Monday June 16 and will run until Sunday July 13. There is over $3300 going into it, with $500 the top prize and $300 top prize for doing articles on populated places and geography. If you are interested in winning something to save you money in buying books for future content, or just see it as a good editathon opportunity to see a lot of articles improved for subjects which interest you, sign up on the page in the participants section if interested. Even if you can only manage a few articles they would be very much appreciated and help make the content produced as diverse and broad as possible! Feel free to invite others who you think might want to contribute.♦Dr. Blofeld09:32, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

List of People Template Page

[edit]

Can a newbie be bold enough to ask some questions ?

I see the example in the talk pages of Park Ridge, IL for "List of people from (city)". That's a great looking idea that seems to have come from a lot of discussion. I'm going to try and use that. Why isn't that listed as part of the US City guidelines ?

Why do we create these lists for city pages given the existence of "Category : People from (city)" ? I'm thinking that one would insert the category link somehow instead of building a different table, when the person's page should also note their association with a city. I figured if anyone would know, it would be an experienced editor. Thank you again.DarkForest7 (talk)21:37, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That's a great question, and congratulations on getting involved and trying to figure things out. Remember "Be Bold" but also don't get disheartened if you cross some rule you weren't aware and the reverting editor is less the courdial. Use those momembers to motivate you to become increasingly familiar with the labyrinth of guidelines around here.
As for list vs categories (vs navigation templates) they are all subtly different and very purposely not mutually exclusive. This article explains the differences and similarities in depth.
Additionally, for me, the main value of creating these lists of people is that when done right, they are more of an article that can be read and explored, giving the reader some insight into the place, and not just a basic navigation list (which sadly, most are).
I hope this answers your question. All the best. ~~~Dkriegls(talk to me!)06:13, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
