If you have any interest in editing Wikipedia by smartphone, I encourage you to read my essay,Smartphone editing. Thank you.

Welcome to my talk pageI use the nameCullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click"New section" or"Add topic" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Hello and welcome to my talk page. If you want to start a new conversation, please click"New section" at the top of this page. I keep the comments that follow from July and August of 2009 readily visible, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome here on Wikipedia when I first started editing.Cullen328Let's discuss it 17:38, 6 November 2011 (UTC

Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk)03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work onJules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.  Will Beback talk 06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in theWikicommons.File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.  Will Beback talk 21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example,User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.  Will Beback talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk)11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work onAllen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I thinkPeter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk)02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments onNorman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat.Jim Heaphy (talk)02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question fromIdh1116 (18:03, 17 January 2026)

[edit]

Hello, this is Ian Harris in all honesty I had rarely ever looked at my Wikipedia page. But I found out that several of my students have been looking at it. And there were a lot of discrepancies. So I filled it in with a bit of information about my competitive background. Everything I listed was 100% accurate… --Idh1116 (talk)18:03, 17 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,Idh1116. You added content that is not verified by any of the references to reliable sources in the article. Wikipedia has a policy ofVerifiability. Providing references to reliable, published sources is how we verify that any content is "100% accurate". You say that you are the subject of the article. That means that you have aconflict of interest. Instead of trying to edit this article directly, you should make formal, well-referencededit requests atTalk: Ian Harris (tennis). If you let me know when you have done so, I will update the article for you.Cullen328 (talk)18:45, 17 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Question fromJZDOGGYBOY (00:21, 20 January 2026)

[edit]

How to make one of those areas in pages where you press a button and it pops up a new section in the article.

for example, on the page for the united states, if you scroll down there is a button labeled history that if you push shows some new text --JZDOGGYBOY (talk)00:21, 20 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,JZDOGGYBOY. I assume that you are reading Wikipedia on the mobile site, and that you are referring to hidden sections of the article following the lead section. The desktop site does not hide sections. When using the source editor (which is what I use, you create a new section by placing two square brackets before your section name, two square brackets after, and then publish your edit. You can find much more detailed instructions atWP:SECTION.Cullen328 (talk)01:26, 20 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile editing

[edit]

I think you are probably one of most famous advocates for mobile editing on the project. I think your insights atWikipedia:Village pump (WMF)#Community-WMF relations would be incredibly valuable if you're free to offer them.Clovermoss🍀(talk)02:01, 22 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,Clovermoss. "Famous" perhaps among a small group of people. I will have to think about your request. My engagement with and respect for the WMF has declined steadily over the years. They seem to be very good at raising and squandering money. I have repeatedly offered my assessments of the shortcomings in how editors working on smartphones are treated and in my opinion, things are still bad and actually getting worse. I wrote my essay over ten years ago and things are no better. I no longer have any hope that the WMF will make any substantive improvements.Cullen328 (talk)05:20, 22 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Even just saying what you just did would be meaningful, if you don't feel up to more. You've tried in the past and haven't been listened to and that in itself is something that is important to tell people.Clovermoss🍀(talk)06:46, 22 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi Jim. Hope you have been well. I wanted to ask you a question about if you think these communities qualify for their own articles on Wikipedia, as I saw that the article of Lombard, California, was deleted some time ago.

According to theFlorida HomeTownLocator, the populated place of Mendoza inHillsborough County is located at the house with the address of 11811 N 51st Street in theTemple Terrace city limits. Based on this information, it appears to be a populated place associated with a specific address within the city limits of Temple Terrace. While it is not explicitly labeled as aneighborhood orsubdivision, its location and classification suggest it could function as a small locality or community within Temple Terrace. It might not have formal boundaries like a designated subdivision but could still be recognized as a distinct area. Its unique identification might stem from historical or administrative reasons rather than being a planned residential area.

Based on the description fromPuerto Rico HomeTownLocator, the populated place of Mendoza inNaguabo municipality, positioned at aroadway median onPuerto Rico Highway 53, does not align with the typical characteristics of a neighborhood or subdivision. Instead, it is more of a designated geographical point, possibly serving as a landmark or administrative feature. Its location in a roadway median suggests it may not include residential or organized community structures that are common in neighborhoods or subdivisions.

Mendoza (historical) is a former populated place inSutter County, California. It is classified as a "historical" feature, meaning it no longer exists as an active community. The site is located nearLive Oak, California, and falls within theZIP Code delivery area of 95953. I have noticed that many communities designated as historical on the GNIS are calledghost towns here on Wikipedia.

The one inMissouri is no longer on theGeographic Names Information System's website or on HomeTownLocator, but because it was identified as a locale, this means that it was a geographic place in Missouri at which there is or was human activity. This definition does not include populated places such as cities or towns, but rather encompasses locations where human activity has occurred, such as camps, farms, or other dispersed sites.

As a result, I don't think these places qualify for their own Wikipedia articles, as stated on the notability guidelines. What do you think?Colman2000 (talk)05:24, 24 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,Colman2000. Does a place that is not a recognized city or town qualify for a Wikipedia article? In my opinion, that depends entirely on whether or not the place has received significant, in depth coverage in several published, independent reliable sources. I think most experienced editors agree. That being said, I am not interested in seeking out borderline articles about such places to try to have them deleted.Cullen328 (talk)06:57, 24 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Jim. That makes a whole lot of sense. These four places do not have any significant, in-depth coverage in reliable sources (as far as my research went), just as you mentioned, so I agree that they do not qualify for Wikipedia articles. I wasn't even planning to create these; I was just curious. Thank you again, and enjoy the new year.Colman2000 (talk)07:07, 24 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Question fromZioness on the Border (09:21, 25 January 2026)

[edit]

Hi! I am interested in correcting some basic facts which have been written on a page about me (written and posted by someone else - I have no idea who, but for the most part, it is accurate). How can I make the minor changes? (For example - spelling on my name in Hebrew, the number of times I have been abroad on speaking tours since Oct 2023). I cannot give citations aside from my own personal knowledge of facts of my life.

Thank you in advanceAdele Raemeraka: Zioness on the Border --Zioness on the Border (talk)09:21, 25 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,Zioness on the Border. In most cases, the subject of a Wikipedia biography is discouraged from directly editing that article, except in cases of overt vandalism. In your particular case, there is an additional restriction because of your connection with the Israel-Palestine conflict. Editors must be highly experienced and fully aware of the relevant policies and guidelines to be permitted to work on any such article related to that conflict. There is informatiin about that on your user talk page. That being said, we want the article about you to be accurate. The best way for you to offer input is by making a formaledit request atTalk: Adele Raemer. As far as the correct Hebrew transliteration, please provide a link or two there to Hebrew language coverage of you by reliable sources. The same applies to any further factual changes that you want to make. As a matter of policy, we cannot rely on your personal knowledge alone. Links to reliable sources verifying the content are required. I am pinging (alerting)Jay8g, the editor who reverted you. Jay8g, would you be willing to assist this editor/article subject by implementing verifiable factual changes? Thank you.Cullen328 (talk)20:05, 25 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Essay

[edit]

I recently made an relatively shortessay but I'm hesitant to move Wikipedia namespace as I wanna be sure it doesn't "overtly contradict consensus" as outlined inWP:Policy. As a user with extensive experience in regard, I'd really appreciate it if you could help me gauge if it strays too far from consensus to move. If you don't care, feel free to decline to check it out, I would absolutely understand. Thank you! -Otherwise (Talk?)09:50, 28 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Kaycee231, please explain why you think that you are eligible for an encyclopedia biography. Please be aware that ournotability requirements for living people are very stringent. How do you qualify?Cullen328 (talk)21:24, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello,
Thank you for your message. Yes, I believe I am eligible for a Wikipedia biography, and I can provide all the required information and independent sources to verify my notability.
I am a businessperson based in Saudi Arabia, and over the years I have established a strong reputation in my field. My work has been covered by reliable, independent media outlets, and I have been publicly recognized for my professional achievements. I can provide third-party news articles, interviews, profiles, and other sources that meet Wikipedia’s notability guidelines for living people.
I understand that Wikipedia has very strict requirements and that notability must be proven through independent coverage, not self-published material. I am prepared to share all the necessary documentation to demonstrate that I meet these standards.
Please let me know what additional information you need from me.Kaycee231 (talk)18:19, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Kaycee231, are you the CEO of a large corporation? Is there currently a Wikipedia article about your company? Please be aware that self-promotion of any kind is not permitted on Wikipedia. Interviews are not independent sources since they consist of you talking about yourself and your business ventures. Most things called "profiles" are of no value since significant, in-depth coverage is required, not brief profile sketches orlisticles of the "Thirty under 30" variety. It is unlikely that any competent Wikipedia editor will write an article for you unless you have highly exceptional accomplishments and coverage. You will have to write a draft article yourself and submit it through theArticles for Creation process. Begin by studying theNotability guideline for people. Then, study Wikipedia's three core content policies, which follow. It will be very difficult for you to comply with theNeutral point of view since almost all people have a hard time writing neutrally about themselves. No original research will also be a challenge because it requires you to effectively "forget" everything you know about yourself when you write.Verifiability requires that you cannot includeanything that is not verified by a reference to a published reliable source. These policies are applied stringently, especially to editors attempting to write an autobiography. Once you have a deep understanding of these policies, then begin studyingYour first article. Another important resource isReferencing for beginners. I want to caution you about paid editing services. Almost all of these are scams out to take your money. Stay away. You should know that the vast majority - well over 99% - of people who try to write Wikipedia autobiographies fail. This is often a frustrating experience for them and the volunteers who review their work. The rare ones who succeed are indisputably notable people with a high level of self-discipline and it usually takes them many months of work and repeated submissions to get their autobiographies accepted. And when those articles get into the encyclopedia they are often heavily modified by other editors quite quickly. You will have no control over such an article once it gets into Wikipedia.Cullen328 (talk)19:00, 8 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
