Thank you today forAl-Musta'li, "about the ninth Fatimid caliph, whose rise to the throne in 1094 was due to the machinations of the powerful vizier al-Afdal Shahanshah, and caused a major rift in the Isma'ili branch of Shi'a Islam. Al-Musta'li remained under the thumb of his vizier for the duration of his relatively short caliphate, and his reign is mostly a record of al-Afdal's actions. The article is a pendant to Nizar ibn al-Mustansir, al-Musta'li's elder brother, who was likely the legitimate successor." --Gerda Arendt (talk)06:22, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question aboutChronicle of Monemvasia

[edit]

Hello. It is mentioned here that "...as well as the Taktika composed by Emperor Leo III the Isaurian (r. 717–741) between 733–746. " Is it theTactica of Emperor Leo VI the Wise, or another book with the same name? Thank you. Vikarna10:08, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HiVikarna! This is a puzzling reference. I don't have access to the source used, but I would assume that this is indeed what is meant. There are no Taktika of Leo III, but IIRC there was an opinion that Leo III was the author of the Taktika before being identified as Leo VI; I am still surprised that a work as late as 1970 would still cling to this view.Constantine10:26, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Year

[edit]

Dear Cplakidas, I am writing to inform you that I have -finally- proceeded with the penultimate step towards the FA review for the Battle of Meligalas article that you artfully translated into English, an A-Class review for the military history project. I have my fingers crossed that all goes well and I would be eager to see you intervening in the review if you feel such a need -- and I hope you won't mind me inquiring about the luck of the other article I had suggested that you translate on Pavlos Melas. This comes with my best wishes for the New Year 2025,Ashmedai 119 (talk)09:07, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Cplakidas, I just wanted to remind you of my query regarding the outcome of your effort to translate into English the Greek Wikipedia's article on Pavlos Melas. As it happens (judging from the A-Class review of the article on the Meligalas battle), assessments/reviews take quite a longer time than I was expecting and I am beginning to feel a bit anxious about whether it would be possible to go through this process by October 2025, the anniversary of Melas's death. Regardless, I hope that all is going well and I send you my wishes for καλή Σαρακοστή!Ashmedai 119 (talk)17:10, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
HiAshmedai 119! I intend to finish work on translation in the next couple of weeks, followed by an immediate GA nomination and then the next steps.Constantine17:59, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great news! Looking forward to the nomination,Ashmedai 119 (talk)18:35, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
HiAshmedai 119! I have finished thetranslation. I will do a couple of read-throughs before moving it to mainspace, but I have found at least one source that is no longer available. Can you please have a look? Thanks!Constantine22:53, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for this! And my apologies for the delay of my response -- which is due to health-related problems. I quickly skimmed the article and noticed a couple of passages where I think that the translation is not entirely faithful to the message that the original Greek intended to convey and I will try to edit them in the near future explaining the reasons for my edits. But these are rather minor phrasing issues and it seems to me that moving it to mainspace should not wait until then, especially as I am not sure at all about my own availability in the coming days. Many thanks once again for engaging with this.Ashmedai 119 (talk)23:16, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again

[edit]

Thank you for your input on the articleGreek constitutional crisis of 1985 and the assessment. I was wondering your thoughts on what may be missing regarding the text to get it to GA and, eventually, FA status.

If you remember, I asked you aboutNoemvriana a couple of years ago. I have not forgotten your advice; it is just that it was difficult to get these two books (I am not in Greece), which I will get next month. So, at some point, I will push this article to a better status. I have already updated the references with theTemplate:sfn, which I find to be an improvement in keeping track of the citations. I am also going to revisitEleftherios Venizelos, as there are too many "citation needed" requests.

Thank you again, and happy editing.A.Cython (talk)21:00, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiA.Cython! I was very pleasantly surprised to see this article, which is a very important (and curiously overlooked) topic. My two cents here, as this is not my main area of expertise, but I have I think a (partially first-hand) fairly good overview of:
  • There are several parts that are unreferenced; fixing this is an absolute minimum for GA or beyond.
  • Some mention of Karamanlis' role in the 1950s and 1960s is necessary, as well as the anti-communist para-state that he could not/did not rein in, and whose most notable expression were the 1961 elections and the murder of Lambrakis, and which led to the junta. This is necessary to make the reader understand where the "clash of two worlds" comes from; the fanatical animus of the left did not spring just from Papandreou's electioneering. Karamanlis was anathema to a large portion of Greek society, Papandreou simply exploited that.
  • More as a general comment, I would take care not to present any side here as having a legal or moral upper hand. Legal niceties aside, Karamanlis tailored the presidency to his own needs to be 'in control' when he could no longer be PM due to the electoral losses of New Democracy, and when Tsatsos was president, Karamanlis was entirely in charge (Tsatsos was not the personality to gainsay Karamanlis). Papandreou's blatant violation of constitutional norms had ample precedent in Karamanlis' and Mitsotakis' (and many others', as you point out) actions in the pre-junta period, and although of course this does not justify anything, it is indicative of the quality of Greece's democratic norms till then. Changing the electoral law right before elections is something which, IIRC, was first used by the ostensibly liberal and republican (i.e., 'good guys') Venizelists in the 1920s, and of course New Democracy too have not shied away from doing it too, when it suited them, quite recently in fact.
  • I would point out that the subsequent presidential elections were very much a consensus-seeking affair, with the unwritten rule even that the ruling party would propose someone from the opposite political sphere (which was, again, broken by New Democracy recently for party-political purposes).

Will be very happy to review, if (when) it goes to FA (I think I disqualified myself from GA reviewer by my edits and this discussion ;)).Constantine21:34, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your input. This is very useful, and I agree with your points as well. I will see how to implement them. I am not an expert either; I follow what the books say. My understanding is that there was a key difference between Karamanlis's strong state, governed by restraint, and Papandreou's strong state exploitation for political domination. For example, compare how Karamanlis tried a smooth transition of power to Papandreou in 1981, even calming down the generals, versus how Papandreou handled the situation by ordering his ministersnot to cooperate with the transition of power after the June 1989 elections. But I agree eventually, the opposition ended up copying Andreas' tactics.
Much of the reason for the article came from the recent nearly complete re-write ofAndreas Papandreou (lost three months of my life, I am still wondering why I did it), which has reached almost 15000 words... so I am creating articles to move some of what I wrote about him and reduce the word count.A.Cython (talk)21:57, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I also suspect that I might have to rely on newspaper reports to support with citations (in general I prefer books)... or search Greek books (which I do not have easy access to) to expand in some of these directions, especially how the political parties tackled the issue after 1989.A.Cython (talk)22:02, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know a reference that mentions that Chaka Bey took Smyrna, much of the Aegean coastlands of Asia Minor and the islands lying off shore in his rebellion against the Byzantine Empire in 1088–91. I think this information is too detailed to be let uncitated.

TFA

Thank you today forAl-Muti, introduced (in 2022) as "about the 23rd Abbasid caliph, who ruled as a puppet of the Buyids. His tenure is generally held to represent the nadir of the caliphate's prestige and power, but the very powerlessness of the office allowed it to regain some stability and end the constant infighting of the Abbasid princes for supremacy. I rewrote the article effectively from scratch during 2021, and it passed GA in May 2021. Al-Muti and his time are not well covered in literature, but I am confident the article is the most complete English-language treatment of the subject in existence"! - Happy new year, in case you look here. --Gerda Arendt (talk)14:08, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
