• Some reviews/interviews described Kittie as riot grrrl or compared them to all female bands (or "women in rock"); this comes up quite a bit but the band didnt cite many of them as influences. in many sources i could pull up morgan say she was mainly influenced by male bands and did not have any female bands or musical idols; despite many comparisons to hole/courtney loveshe has said she isn't inspired by her (though listened to early era hole) and also says in another interview shenever listened to L7 or babes in toyland. i feel it would be redundant to mention these and then be like "but they said this is not the case" (i have noted this) but also worried i might commitfalse balance. what do i do?
• Rather than talk about it in music or critical reception, would it be better to talk about jouranlist descriptions of kittie being sexually provocative with their image and song titles in the aftermath section, whose first paragraph deals with the way jouranlists interpreted kittie (using journalistic comment or band interviews). Reason being: 1. the band denies this and was irked by this,and i am too given the fact they were mostly minors at the time (15-17/16-18) and 2. idk if i understand it but i feel those comparisons in the music section would constitutefalse equivalence given point 1 denials; it is not true so why allude to it there???
• {{s|Note 3: refers to bassist Tanya Candler. In regards toriot grrl: my best advice? Pretend you didn't see it. That's a load of horseshit. I have seen all kinds of things where I'll see a reliable source make an unreasonable musical description or critique, and straight up just skip adding it to Wikipedia. I have seenMichael Stipe call one of hisR.E.M. songsglam metal, and a published author callRHCP'sMother's Milkgrebo.

I like the idea of moving image concerns to aftermath, that's very sound thinking.

Still working on later sections (release and promotion onwards), but I think the first four sections (background, recording, composition and songs) are now in a relatively stable place; give a glance in your own time. outside that, i've some other questions:

• Metal Maidens 1999 mentions the existence of guitarist Sandra and bassist Mel, who were predecessors to Morgan and Candler; other sources allude to this in terms of dates, albeit without those names. How do i go about this without it beingWP:SYNTH
• Spit's liner notes credit the songs to Kittie; however according to SOCAN (perthis: source in article uses different source that says same thing/covers same event) the songs are officially credited to Morgan, Mercedes and Bowman. Am I correct, then, to not include Candler's influences in the second paragraph of composition since it does not appear she contributed to the music? (though she did write the lyrics of "paperdoll"; which is mentioned.) (in other interviews the band says most songs written before Candler joined)
• Contradictions surrounding what time the band finished recording per night; Candler said in Kittie documentary the band finished at no later than 10pm per day, whilst Morgan said that recording sessions would continue into the early mornings before school. Which one, or does it matter?
• Quite a significant claim in Hefflon 2000 is Morgan saying she played bass on three songs ("Raven", "Immortal", and something else). How do I go about presenting that??? The other one about Paperdoll has some light (read:light) corroboration with Marymont 2000, which states the released album "sounds just like the original, except that one new song has been added featuring bassist Talena [Atfield]".
• Songs 2nd para:Kittie also thanks Static-X, Napalm Death, and System of a Down in the liner notes of Spit. Mostly fine with one caveat; Slipknot. This line is based on a quoute from the source cited stating "But, we get it, Kittie don't play in the riot grrrl category. Their thing is metal, and Static-X, System of a Down, Orgy, Slipknot, and Napalm Death are among the main thank-yous in the album's booklet." (original french text:"Mais, on la'compris, les Kittie ne jouent pas dans la categorie riot grrrl. Leur truc, ce'st le metal, et Static-X, System of a Down, Orgy, Slipknot, Napalm Death font partie des principaux remercies dans le livret du skeud." I haven't mentioned Slipknot because 1. The album wasn't even out whenSpit was recorded and 2. band doesn't appear in1999 liner notes (both liners feature the same bands but the 2000 liners have slipknot; im thinking (wont express) this is bc of the tour they did. Am I right to think/do this?
• Does songs 4th para (concerning gender) make sense
• In many, many, many contemporary interviews (i.e. from 2000), the members of Kittie cite Candler's departure as the reason behindSpit being delayed from October 1999 to January 2000, and they also indicate that it was released in January 2000. However, sources since the 2010s contradict this; i.e. in this2018 interview Mercedes says album was released as 5,000 copies in October, quickly sold out and was re-released in January 2000 with proper promotion. Morgan also says in this2014 interview the album had an initial press of 8,000 copies, sold out in first week. I'm not sure what the "first press" is referring to, since it appears on discogs and ebay that most copies of the album copyrighted to 1999 are stickered with "Limited Edition Advance Music"; suggesting they're promotional copies??? I am thus very, very confused. (also: according to sources; promotional copies were sent out in fall 1999, with Morgan saying reviews had been published as early as September.)

i mean, hey. i wrote about them because i personally and emotionally could not accept the possibility of them falling into the ether and dissapearing. i wanted people to know who the fuck they were. so if ppl get into it, i'm glad i guess. i feel like i've done my job, though part of me has felt at times that it isn't good enough and would lead them to disband... especially when i put the "best album" line onThe Weight of the Mask. i was definitely writing what i saw (and it is supported!), but i don't know if stating that cut them off at the pass, and it would kill me if it were the case. i think looking at the articles i can definitely tell 1. my writing limitations, i wasn't good at writing music sections at the time and 2. what drew me to the band; lyrics. either way; depending on how good the sources are i'll expand and copyedit them where relevant.

@MFTP Dan Basically: I'm having a hard time trying to derive meaning from reviews criticizing albums for "lacking substance" or reviews that suggest the album "cannot be taken seriously". examples of this in articles i've written include:

1.From the Outside: i kinda think the reviews after AllMusic are generallyrockist i.e. they didn't like hey violet moving away from rock towards pop; that seems to be the trend when considering the sources (rock sound, kerrang, melodic; all rock publications!!)

2.Sevas Tra andHouse of Secrets (the issues are virtually the same, though moreso in former): critical reviews which basically don't talk about the music and instead misunderstand the lyrics as being nothing beyond the fact they talk about a lot of negative things (the nu metal cliche). Perhaps (delivery, subject) "overwrought" or "overdone" would work in how it is "overly being X" but it feels wrong as it doesn't logically entail from Otep's intention.

3. basically most of theKittie studio albums: i.e. the lead ofIn the Black saying"though others found it unremarkable and lacking in originality." What is "unremarkable" supposed to mean here?? and what/who issupposed to be impressed by it? Like maybe the confusion stemmed from being unable to explain how critics were mixed over Kittie's performances when it feels rather polarised but still.

I have kinda realised that there is a bignormativity issue in these critiques; that they assume somethinghas to be there as opposed to something not working in its context or something like that. I'm well aware of NPOV and that by ideally, in quoting sources like these, it's a general reflection of societial attitudes in the sources' context and it's not my space to call them out on it in the live article. The problem stems from a lack of recognition/awareness; most artists aren'tTaylor Swift in the sense thatcommentators will retrospectively identify criticism of moving towards pop as losing "authenticity" as being rockist (see the article lead) as they simply aren't that big and don't have people paying attention for prolonged periods of time for analysis to come about. So in short:, as I try to write about things: should I simply avoid "lacking substance" stuff and try harder at finding critiques that talk about what IS as opposed to what IS NOT there?
