Hello, Parsecboy. You have new messages atUgaria's talk page.
You canremove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
I was so reckless in editing pages that I was a fool to realize that I was doing so without going to external sources. If NavSource is on the external sources for ship awards, I would have been likely to edit, but with caution. I like to add ribbons because I want people to visually see for themselves what awards the ships had been. But I am sorry for editing too much. I'm not asking you at this time to unblock me, but please read this statement.Ugaria (talk)23:05, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tag bombing

[edit]

Hi, sorry for tag bombing your new article, I was just looking at new articles in recent changes, and noticed that yours didn't have any sources, so I naturally gave it the unreferenced tag. Apologies about that.RedactedHumanoid (talk)20:06, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I understand what you're doing, but some editors find it grating to have tags applied when they're in the middle of editing a page (since it can cause edit conflicts). I also don't see a lot of value in simply tagging articles for the sake of tagging them; I'd just as soon solve the problem if I can.Parsecboy (talk)20:09, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I'll keep this in mind. Thanks. I'm still somewhat new to Wikipedia policies, so I'll be a bit more careful in the future. Have a nice day (or night).RedactedHumanoid (talk)20:14, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and yeah, I had seen on your userpage you started editing just last year - I'm not a whole lot from 20 years (so I probably ought to keep in mind that not everyone has been around even half that long). Sfn error in SMS Habsburg (1865)

[edit]

Hi, inthis edit toSMS Habsburg (1865) you add {{sfn|Ziegler|pp=16–17, 21}}. Unfortunately this causes ano-target error. There are three Ziegler sources listed in the article, Ziegler 1870, Ziegler 1871, and Ziegler 1872. If you could fix the error it would be appreciated.DuncanHill (talk)18:10, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, fair enough. It was done in good faith. I didn't see how I was making it less precise or harder to edit. I have been chided by many admins in the past on leaving refs stacked like that.Boo Boo (talk)18:33, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

From my talk page - "I didn't see how it hurt. Had been taken to task for leaving refs stacked like that. It was done in good faith, and I've never been criticized for putting it in this style. When I edit pages, it is the style I was told to use by admins. The parentheses are to make it more conforming to Chicago MoS. The version I saw on Google Books said it was published by Basic Books, an imprint of Perseus Books Group (and thePerseus Books Group page doesn't list a Perseus Press as a current or former imprint). TheWorldcat entry for the bookdoes list the publisher as Perseus Press, but I've known Worldcat to be sketchy on details (and you'll note they misspelled the author's first name!)Parsecboy (talk)18:46, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

See also section should not contain "red links" perMOS:NOTSEEALSO.French cruiser Linois is aset index article i.e. the same as a list article (not a disambiguation article which has other rules). Set index article should have references like other list articles.
SMS Sperber (1888) is not ambiguity title because it has a disambiguater. The example in theWP:NOHAT hasWater (wuxing) as an example which should not have a hatnote to water because "Here, the hatnote can be removed. A reader who is following links within Wikipedia is unlikely to end up at Water (wuxing) if they were looking for other meanings of water, since water does not redirect there.".

Good American Speech / Mid-Atlantic accent

[edit]

Hello, I saw your name at Recently Active Administrators. I'm wondering if you could help a dispute atTalk:Mid-Atlantic accent: the most recent two sections, for reference. On the talk page the last couple months, editors decided to makeMid-Atlantic accent into a dab page and then split most of the page's content into a new articleGood American Speech. However, this new dissenting user reverted all that and insists that we need a full RM to (re)perform these actions, while three of us are trying to show the user why this is not the case. I'm no expert on WP policy. Can you be of any help? Thanks.Wolfdog (talk)15:26, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ottoman battleships

[edit]

Someone on Reddit flagged that the total number of planned ships inReşadiye-class battleship is in conflict withList of battleships of the Ottoman Empire. Given the second paragraph atReşadiye-class battleship#Ships, I'm going to guess the list should be changed to say that there were two planned ships (not three)?Ed [talk] [OMT]05:05, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the statement in that list is cited to a fairly low quality book. Oddly, the author of the list ignored Langensiepen et. al. who also state it was only 2. I can correct it later today.Parsecboy (talk)10:23, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Roon-class cruisers

[edit]

I foundhttps://www.reddit.com/r/WarshipPorn/comments/pnj3td/the_two_roonclass_armoured_cruisers_sms_yorck_and/ - it isnot well documented, but given Yorck sunk in 1914, we can probably limit the time frame sufficiently, at least getting us a{{PD-US-1923-abroad}}. Of course, it's possible one of your books has more documentation. What d'ye think?Adam Cuerden(talk)Has about 8.9% of allFPs.22:11, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We can narrow down when the photo was taken to between 1907 and 1909 (and it was likely taken in 1907, since it appears the fleet did not go to Norway for it's usual summer cruises in 1908 and 1909, instead opting to take longer cruises into the Atlantic). But the question that matters more is when was it first published, since that's how we determine US copyright. I've not seen this photo before, and it's basically impossible to track down the original publication in situations like this. I did a quick search for postcards, since you can get lucky that way, but came up empty-handed. It's a shame, since it's a nice scan.Parsecboy (talk)09:38, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But it occurs to me that the historian Dirk Nottelmann has been publishing articles inWarship International over the last several years, tracing the development of German cruisers of the period, and his latest article (in the Dec 2024 issue) was on one of the design studies that precededSMS Fürst Bismarck, and his articles are always liberally illustrated. It may take some time for him to get to theRoons, but he may include that photo, which could give us some leads on its source.Parsecboy (talk)18:41, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We can hope, then. I'm half-wondering if I should presume publication and upload lest linkrot happens, but.... maybe not.Adam Cuerden(talk)Has about 8.9% of allFPs.10:15, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We'll be into PD-old-assumed territory for the European copyright aspect in 2 years at a minimum (given that I'm reasonably sure it was taken in 1907). But we'd still need to nail down US copyright.
The person who uploaded it appears to still be active on Reddit - maybe they know more?Parsecboy (talk)11:58, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Could you take a photo of the other side of the rifle as well? If you still have the rifle that is. I was asking since many articles about guns have views from both sides (like for exampleKarabiner 98k) so I thought it would be great if the article about the Vz. 24 also had that.Alin2808 (talk)12:29, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You have reverted my edits on excuse that my edits are based on self-published source. I see you deleted everything: you didn't edit my improvements or talk to me. I am considered an expert on my subjects. Wikipedia advises allowance for expert sources, whether self-published or not, and to talk to the author rather than revert everything. "When you find a passage in an article that is biased, inaccurate, or unsourced the best practice is to improve it if you can rather than deleting salvageable text." Histmerge

[edit]

Hi, thanks for merging the history betweenMid-Atlantic accent andGood American Speech. However, it looks like your effort might have been botched. Now the dab page hasalmost no history, and the article hasmixed history (notice the wildly fluctuating byte counts). Can you look into it again?Nardog (talk)09:10, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I can split those edits out. It'll take a bit of deleting/moving pages around. The problem is, the edits to the dab page were done to the "proper" article, so they got moved over when I merged the histories. But it makes more sense to apply them to the "new" dab page.Parsecboy (talk)12:01, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

June and July music

[edit]
story ·music ·places

I haveEaster Oratorio on the main page, but of course told the story, which is admittedly complex,on Easter Sunday for the music's 300th anniversary. - Thank you for your support! - Your FAC is #2 in line. --Gerda Arendt (talk)22:24, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Gerda! Nice work, again, on your article - I'm sure it will be promoted soon enough! I am glad to be back in the swing of FAC after a few years off (though now of course I'm kicking myself over having wasted all that time!)Parsecboy (talk)18:20, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! -Stravinsky pictured on his birthday + Vienna pics - but too many who died + I havea "defiant" cantata up for GA --Gerda Arendt (talk)19:20, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Coincidentally, Stravinsky died on my birthday - I remember doing a newspaper project in school on things that had happened on your birthday, and part of it was writing obituaries for famous people who had died that day.
That was an interesting read, and neat to have the except of sheet music and audio sample (and I was quite surprised to figure out that it wasn't an image, but a whole slew of code I don't understand!) Though I will add, it drives home the point that machine-generated content like the audio won't ever replace human performances; there's something soulless and flat about it that's hard to pin down exactly, but doesn't move you the way a live performance does.Parsecboy (talk)20:28, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. - Interesting, that project, - I never looked at who died on my birthday ;) - Which score do you mean, - I forgot. Not Stravinky. - While you are of course invited to check out my recommendations any day, today offers unusuallya great writer of novels, music with light anda place with exquisite food (yes, on my birthday). - The defiant cantata is GA now, one of the fastest between nom and becoming GA. --Gerda Arendt (talk)15:57, 28 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It was a fun project, to see what events had happened on your birthday - I had a few good ones, like the opening of the first modern Olympics, and I share my birthday with a few notables, like Rousseau and (maybe?) Maimonides. I was referring to the audiohere - there's some quality to it (that I bet I could identify if I knew anything about audio engineering!) that marks it as machine generated. Congratulations on the GA! I have a few up myself, such asSMS Iltis (1878) and its successorSMS Iltis (1898).Parsecboy (talk)13:47, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
story ·music ·places
Thank you ;) - I'll go for FA once more and will let you know. - Today is Bastille Day, commemorated by a DYK as my "story" and a visit to the Bastille Opera in "music". I like the interview coming with the story, on the day before the big event, but for pomp and circumstance, the affair with 600 singing children and orchestra, and the singer dressed in the national flag, was also captured on videos, much slower. --Gerda Arendt (talk)16:25, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, I look forward to seeing it at FAC! I'll have to watch the video later (I'm at work at the moment).Parsecboy (talk)19:19, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Three Ukrainian topics were on the main page today, at least at the beginning,RD andDYK, - see my talk. - Perhaps I'll nominate later today. --Gerda Arendt (talk)18:19, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nicely done - I see Igoron 19 July (and was on until early this morning) and Rodin andKateryna in DYK right now. Interesting reads, all of them!Parsecboy (talk)22:47, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for exploring! All were started by others, - I love collaboration. - Three of "my" recent deaths bios are on the main page right now, onemy story today,Gary Karr, and I loved to find his breakthrough concert in 1962 as a video. In my music today I match it with 9 other double bassists, 7 conducted by a person who's birthday is today - coincidence ;) - The FAC is open now, forBWV 79. --Gerda Arendt (talk)19:24, 23 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't mentioned it, but I also noticed you hada flautist in RD as well last week. I tend to edit alone, though I'm in a pretty niche area and there aren't many others working on articles on old warships ;)
I'll make some time to review it!Parsecboy (talk)18:15, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! -Béatrice Uria-Monzon andher story,Julia Hagen and herno story --Gerda Arendt (talk)20:28, 26 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It’s too bad that Julia Hagen didn’t make it on DYK - sometimes that place is pretty legalistic. I haven’t nominated anything there in many years over frustration with the process.Parsecboy (talk)21:40, 26 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps say sohere - OnBach's day of death, I decorated my user pages in memory of his music, andmy story ends on "peace". --Gerda Arendt (talk)10:25, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Bismarck class edits

[edit]

The info on armor penetration comes from “Common Ground on Shifting Sands Standardized Range Tables and Penetration Probabilities” by Bill Jurens published in Warship International available on JSTOR[1]. Sorry if I botched the actual citation part. If you want further info on Bismarcks turtle deck behind the main belt (it was part of the side armor protection scheme) see Koop and Schmolkes book “Battleships of the Bismarck Class”. I already addressed the Nelson Rifling statements: Lundgren and Worth use the muzzle velocity of the Mk II rifling for their tables, Campbell gives the same velocity for Mk II rifling in his book and gives their history (most of the war they had Mk I rifling). Ill add from more reliable sources about Bismarcks armor later instead.76.164.125.53 (talk)07:22, 15 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That is frustrating for sure - Neruda was dismissed because a reviewer had never heard of him, as if they are a universal arbiter of what is and is not commonly known. I suggested another alternative that will hopefully be acceptable to all involved, but we'll see.Parsecboy (talk)16:11, 11 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

gun elevation and depression corrections for the 30.5 cm gun

[edit]

Hoi, I see that the articles on Derfflinger, Kaiser, König and Helgoland classes contain different data about the gun elevation corrections. According to Schmalenbach all turrets for the 30.5 L/50 gun were modified in the same way : in order to increase elevation from 13.5 to 16 degrees, the depression was decreased from -8 to -5.5 degrees which increased to range from 187 hm to 205 hm. Is it ok to adapt this ?Klutserke (talk)15:09, 5 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ships in categories, countries, and cities

[edit]

Hello, Parsecboy! I see you've proposedgoing to WP:RFD andreverted my edits concerning the category of ships built in Pula. This would make Pula (and Rijeka, too) the only city with duplicated categories (seeCategory:Ships by city of construction). If that's acceptable, then let it remain as is. If there's no need for duplicate categories, feel free to submit theWP:RFD or amend it as you think best. Kind regards,57ud3N7'5 (talk)16:52, 24 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I reverted the changes in part because cut/paste moves are generally prohibited on Wikipedia - if we want to rename the category, it should be moved, not just created anew. It may be worth considerng that are other duplicates, such asCategory:Ships built in Gdańsk andCategory:Ships built in Danzig where the categories are differentiated by era (though I don't know that we need a specifically Austrian/Austro-Hungarian category vs a Yugoslavia/Croatia one). I also don't feel strongly about Pola vs. Pula.Parsecboy (talk)17:58, 24 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for more quality content, and for suggesting a hook forCanto General,my story! --Gerda Arendt (talk)11:45, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Gerda! I'm glad we were able to getCanto General over the finish line!Parsecboy (talk)11:51, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So am I. And with a hook a variant of the one first proposed. Just a day too late, - the composer's day of death was yesterday, but I missed it. The premiere of the piece was 7 September, but I only looked at OTD in case DYK didn't make it. Getting older ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)12:15, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes, we do the best we can - I had wanted to get something as TFA on 31 May 2016, since that was the 100th anniversary of theBattle of Jutland, butthat didn't work out (I can't quite recall why not). I suppose the 110th anniversary is just next year, which would give me time to getHigh Seas Fleet into FA-shape. In a similar vein, you could always shoot for OTD on 4 April, since it would be the 45th anniversary of the expanded work's premiere.Parsecboy (talk)12:30, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. On 5 April, we may have theEaster Oratorio on its 301st anniversary. I wanted it on DYK this year, for 300, but the nom was even longer (I believe) than this one, so too late, and OTD didn't accept it because they think it can only go by calendar date which is nonsense and would have been 1 April. I nominated for FAC in defiance ;) - and it worked. Will try FAC for Christmas for 300 years. - Good luck with your plans! --Gerda Arendt (talk)12:55, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There is a tendency here to be hyper-focused on the letter of the law - obviously, Easter Sunday is more relevant than the specific date in 1725 (and amusingly,on 21 April, I'm assuming it was you who received the opposite answer forBWV 6!) Sometimes all you can do is shrug, I guess. Thanks, and good luck with yours as well!Parsecboy (talk)13:59, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it was me for the next day ;) - the only educated answer. How can we teach people who don't Neruda? Too much - like the Easter answer - depends on us limited individual editors. --Gerda Arendt (talk)14:09, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Some of it is the arrogance of youth, I think - as I've matured, I've become less sure that I know everything ;) All we can do is continue to persevere and try to make what progress we can.Parsecboy (talk)15:28, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's a nice approach. - I enjoya DYK that pictures a person together with achievements in art, - a little miracle, giving hope. --Gerda Arendt (talk)11:53, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats on another DYK, which also made it to ITN (though I missed it at that time)!Parsecboy (talk)20:52, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! OTDArvo Pärt, 90. Did you know that it took me some trouble to get him to the main page?Listen! --Gerda Arendt (talk)13:03, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I knew (to an extent, of course) what it was like to live under the Soviet system, but it's still a little jarring to be reminded, in 2025, what could get you censured by the state. Thanks for another interesting article!Parsecboy (talk)16:30, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and agree. The article was by many, but the push for the main page by me ;) -Today is the birthday of the 16th Thomaskantor after Bach, remembered. --Gerda Arendt (talk)12:09, 20 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My 100th biography to the Main page in 2025 isSiegmund Nimsgern. --Gerda Arendt (talk)16:23, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, 100 articles on the main page this year! That's quite some output!Parsecboy (talk)17:23, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I just counted those among recent deaths, mostly not written from scratch by me but just brought to enough quality. There will be a few more on DYK and a few more OTD. Hoping forJohn Rutter on 24 Sep for his 80th birthday. He is in place for OTD, but I better do something about his article until then ;) - My first step to move the long and mostly unreferenced list of "works" (containing plenty of arrangements also) to a separate article. We began to learn a new piece by him in choir today, new for us that is ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)20:53, 22 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have found that it's frequently more difficult to overhaul an existing article than it is to start from scratch - it wasquite a project to beatRichelieu-class battleship into decent shape. I have had to do similar things in the past with unreferenced material, but I typically move it to the talk page if I can't find a source. Good luck with his article!Parsecboy (talk)09:40, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, and the article made it to the main page. - Isang his major choral works with four choirs, and many of his uplifting anthems,13 DYK? I watched him explain hisMagnificat in person in 1998, and nowsee it on Youtube: he wore the same outfit. --Gerda Arendt (talk)22:45, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Admin attention

[edit]

Hi. I was going to start a discussion on the Administrators' noticeboard page but I really just need someone to take a look at this.User:BiyingTram has just recently started editing in motorcycle racing articles, creating them, but has now twice created mainspace articles while ignoring significantly more developed and active user drafts. This happened withRico Salmela yesterday (draft was mine, it was finished and waiting for review) and just now withHakim Danish (someone else's page but I was working on it). In both cases there was an existing draft clearly visible (red box) and the drafts had far more content and sourcing. I have told them on their talk page to please try to work on the drafts before publishing his own article, but they just dismiss it.

I know it's technically possible to just publish your own article even with an existing draft on the subject, but the ones they are creating are very poorly sourced and contain lots of incorrect information, they just create the article and leave it like that. I would like them to understand what I'm trying to tell them but it just doesn't seem to go that way. It's frustrating to deal with this as I take a lot of time to work on articles/drafts and then someone just comes through and completely ignores it, basically downgrading it. I also know I can merge the existing draft but it's still frustrating.

I would appreciate your input and maybea a formal warning if you agree this pattern is disruptive. Thanks in advance.Fishyblyn (talk)16:14, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fishyblyn - this is sort of a tough situation, since you're correct that they can simply create an article even if there's an existing draft. But Wikipedia is also intended to be acollaborative project, andcommunication is required. On the third hand, we generally give people a fair bit of rope before any sanctions are considered, and two somewhat marginal instances aren't enough of a pattern (and even if it was more than that, I don't know that there's anything sanctionable in what they're doing). If they were creating bad articles (in the sense of hoaxes, purposefully wrong info, etc.) that would be a different story, but it sounds like they're just bad in the sense of quality of sourcing/writing/etc.
Yes, it's annoying that they're ignoring the existing drafts, but I think there's not a lot we can do about it besides merging the draft and moving on. At some point, they might get the hint that the work they're putting in on their version is a waste of time if you just come along behind and overwrite it. Maybe they won't, but as long as you keep creating good content to replace their low-quality stuff, then that's the best we can do. I do appreciate the good work you're doing (which is not something most of us content writers hear enough, I think), so don't let this get to you. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.Parsecboy (talk)16:58, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's fine, thanks for taking your time to reply!Fishyblyn (talk)17:03, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Amazing, thank you for those! - Mystory today is about a mezzo as a thinking person, DYK? (The nomination wasn't by me, which probably helped to a short review.) - Look at the video if you have a few minutes. I never saw her on stage, but (in 2022) the last Carmen production at the Bastille Opéra that she was in, - see music. --

Congratulations to you as well - I believe she also featured on the main page when she passed back in July, right? I recall reading her article then. I'm at the office right now, so I'll have to watch the video later.Parsecboy (talk)19:05, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
She featured when she died, but I made her GA later, so good for a DYK. Someone noticed that the video isn't of the Habanera, butthis one is. I'm in a situation where sound isn't wanted, but images and subtitles told me something ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk)20:20, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I thought. I see what she meant about the "meditative and more dreamy angle". You know, I don't think I've ever been to an opera, but we have an opera house in my city, and it would be good to take the kids (who are 10 and 12) to experience it.Parsecboy (talk)12:22, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - I saw my first opera when I was 15, and on stage (a year later) was a girl that age on her wedding day, - you will need to be careful about what to show the kids. My second opera wasGianni Schicchi, and I am grateful to Brian Boulton for the love he put into that article! - Happy birthday,Margaret Medlyn! (I found the article - not by me - when searching for someone whose birthday is today.) - I took acat pic, presented by Rosiestep today. --Gerda Arendt (talk)16:03, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, and there's also the problem of finding an opera that will hold their interest - the next one on the calendar is an adaptation ofThe Old Man and the Sea, which I suspect may not be all that interesting to them! There's a bit of fine line to walk, so it may take some time before we find a good option for them.Parsecboy (talk)16:59, 7 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Summer offerings outside might be good, or smaller-scale productions. -Happy 50th birthday, Alain Altinoglu!) - I let the video begin with a closeup of the octobass - show your kids ;)Gerda Arendt (talk)19:04, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am proud to have brought two performing women to the main page. Sadly, death kept both from performing more, one sooner, the other much later. If you have little time just listen to the one who died young and see if it touches you (intoday's story, - I don't want to sprinkle youtube links outside my user pages). Latest pics from a day to the opera in Frankfurt, and afterwards (because train service is only once an hour) a lovely stroll along the Main river with illumination and the moon reflected. --Gerda Arendt (talk)19:35, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My latest:Roberta Alexander, -listen. --Gerda Arendt (talk)21:16, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to take a look at that peer review when I have more time to dig into it, but from a first pass, I don't think the oppose on sourcing was all that justified.Parsecboy (talk)11:21, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kaiserliche Marine Question

[edit]

A question which you orSturmvogel 66 may know the answer to, given you've spent a lot of time reading through the various secondary sources which cover the Imperial Navy. In Keith Yates'Flawed Victory (2000), p. 46 he claimed that German rangefinder operators "had to have perfect vision in both eyes and needed long periods of training. They were even ordered to abstain from beer and sex while preparing to go to sea". He proudly did not reference anything in the book, so I'm wondering where the hell he got that detail from. Any ideas? It doesn't appear to be from Sumida, at the time the fire control wizard, and it doesn't seem to be in Seaman Stumpf's diaries. —Simon Harley (Talk).08:17, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've not seen that claim before either. I had a look in Hase'sKiel and Jutland and he makes no mention of any such criteria in Chapter II (and he does specifically refer to the so-called "Bg men" who operated the rangefinders), and if there were such orders, he would have known. On page 129, hedoes state that "[before sweeps] no one drank a drop of alcohol at meals, and that, in spite of the fact that we were none of us despisers of wine, woman, and song. On all cruises in wartime we treated ourselves like sportsmen in training: from the moment of putting to sea until we came back to our moorings we were practically all abstainers." Clearly, this was voluntary behavior, so if Hase is the source for that detail, then Yates is overstating the situation.Parsecboy (talk)12:18, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. I'd forgotten Hase. I just checked Google Books for the German version in Yates' bibliography and there's no mention of "bier" apparently. I'll do the same with the other German works he lists at some point. —Simon Harley (Talk).13:11, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I had wondered if there was a translation issue as well, but it looks fairly straightforward.
It beggars belief that that could be Yates' source, especially when he assures us in the preface "I have invented nothing". I suppose it could be possible though. —Simon Harley (Talk).19:36, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It could simply be a conflation of different sources, or sloppiness. Yates was a chemist by training, after all.
I checked Marder, andin Vol. I he states that "...the instrument required a man with special qualities of eyesight: excellent and identical vision in both eyes". Not quite what Yates states either, but a closer than the bit potentially from Hase.Parsecboy (talk)12:12, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Help with a (hopefully) future A and FA class article

[edit]

Hello @Parsecboy,
I am presently improving an article onUSCGC Dione and hoping to get it to A and then FA class. I have looked through some past warship reviews of both levels, but was curious to see if you had any advice or thoughts yourself! I've presently put it up for peer review but haven't gotten any takers.
By the way, very impressive record of GAs and FAs! Wish I had that kind of time, haha.
Thanks,PhoenixCaelestis (Talk ·Contributions)18:28, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PhoenixCaelestis - in terms of general advice, I'd have said to look at past reviews, but you did that already! One thing I'd mention on that is, look for some from 2008-2011, before the old-timers likeuser:Sturmvogel 66 and I knew what we were doing - that will help you catch little things like fixing the convert templates to round off trailing ".0", which are easy to overlook. Another easy thing to do is use thisdupe link tool to identify redundant links in the article.
In terms of specific thoughts on the article:
The infobox is pretty bloated in my opinion - for example, pick one speed and leave it at that. Also, there's a tendency to think that because a field exists, it must be filled, when that doesn't necessarily make sense - for example, why is Unita Risch important for readers to see in the box? She's not notable, as far as I can tell. Remember that the box is to provide a summary of important information (like the introduction) so readers can get a sense of the subject at a glance.
I'm sure one question you'll get is why the jump from 1942 to 1945?
There are some copyright questions I have (which can be frustrating and complex) - for example,File:USCGC Dione towing fishing vessel.png I don't think meets the non-free criteria, since the ship during a particular period is a pretty low bar. ForFile:Esso Augusta damaged.jpg, how do we know this is a government photographer? Plenty of civil aviation (such as theCivil Air Patrol, who were volunteers, not government employees) were active.
I'll try to find some time to take a look at the peer review and give more detailed feedback there.Parsecboy (talk)20:49, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There’s no good information that I could find for the ship’s service between 1942 and 1945. The most was an obituary mentioning someone served onDione and performed convoy work in 1943. Also, thanks for the infobox notes - I’ll work on that tomorrow.

Improvements to USS Torsk page

[edit]

What else needs to happen for the status rating of the USSTorsk page to be upgraded past "B"? B seems to be a pretty decent rating but I would like to see the page eventually rated higher. I am not especially familiar with what the "nuts and bolts are" for the process of improving an article/assessing it for a higher rating, but I was thinking you might be.AC9016 (talk)17:26, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article is probably good enough forWP:GA right now, I just haven't had the time to push it through (I have a fairly hefty backlog I've been slowly feeding throughWP:GAN to avoid overwhelming the queue). There are no doubt some sources that could be added, like Rohwer'sChronology of the War at Sea or Blair'sSilent Victory, but I don't think that's strictly necessary for GA.
But for A-class orWP:FA, there are probably insurmountable problems relating to sourcing. In short, enough editors are opposed to heavily sourcing articles from DANFS due to potential bias that we would be unlikely to get the article promoted to those levels. Some citations could be supplemented (but not replaced entirely) with Rohwer, Blair, etc., butTorsk is obscure enough to not receive in-depth coverage (unlikeUSS Wahoo (SS-238), for example). This is particularly a problem for the post-war period.Parsecboy (talk)17:55, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the article onTorsk is in good shape overall; it has has seen numerous small improvements recently from the both of us and DMacks, and that's all helped.Silent Victory and some other written sources are what I'd like to look to next, because it looks to me like we have largely reached the end of what will be available through general online sources. Things like JSTOR may have more, but overall a boat this old will mostly be documented more in printed sources. She is also not the most famous vessel ever, so there are not as many sources covering her as, say, HMSHood or theBismarck.
Yes, I can see that being a problem for advancing theTorsk article past "basic" GA status. I'd still like to try, but the article needs to get its turn in the que for GA status first. It sounds like many articles are going up for GA status. If it will be a decent wait, I can work on gathering printed sources (which will pretty much all be from American/US Navy sources I will admit) and getting more images of the boat uploaded to Wikimedia.
Lastly, you hit the nail on the head.Torsk served well during her 24 years active and 3 reserve, but she is one submarine out of many, not one that Sabaton will be likely to write a song about. And that unfortunately means there will only be so many sources to choose from.
I know there was going to be a book aboutTorsk that the Torsk Volunteers have worked on, but apparently Arcadia Publishing wanted full ownership/rights to all images, documents, etc. and the TVA understandably refused, which meant the book never went to print.AC9016 (talk)18:05, 28 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I could've sworn I had a copy ofSilent Victory, but I couldn't find it last night. But it's pretty readily available, both in libraries and for sale, so it shouldn't be hard to get our hands on it. I do have Rohwer, but that's more useful as a supplement, as it's fairly high level (see how I used it atUSS Wilkes-Barre, as an example).Final Patrol: True Stories of World War II Submarines has a chapter on Torsk, which should go a long way toward replacing DANFS citations. Unfortunately, not all of the pages are visible in Google Books, so that's another one where we'd want to track down a hard copy.
It shouldn't be a problem to nominate the article for GA once we're ready - the reviewers that participate atWP:GAN#WAR are usually pretty quick, I meant mainly that I have a project I've been working on for the last year or so to document all of the gunboats built by Germany (seehere), which is my main priority at the moment.
As something of an aside, I'm glad we were able to move past the initial disagreements. We both want to improve the article, after all, and I'm happy to work with you going forward.Parsecboy (talk)16:57, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

State of Maryland

[edit]

I don't know whether you were being sarcastic or actually wanted me to do this but I did check. The legal name of the state, used on government stationary and such, is "State of Maryland" but the only articles that actually use the entire legal name of the state are ones for places like Virginia, which is a state but does not call itself that, being instead the Commonwealth of Virginia, officially speaking.

It's not really that big of a deal anyway. So I agree; in the context of the USSTorsk article, there is no need to capitalize "state" in "state of Maryland."AC9016 (talk)17:37, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Parsecboy. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

I have noticed that you are manually converting ship infoboxen. Two of the articles that you converted have ended up inCategory:Pages using infobox ship with unknown parameters. They are:

You might want to wait until the bot can get to any others that you want converted or give me a list of articles and I can convert them using the prospective bot code.

Trappist the monk (talk)01:59, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I see there weretwoproblems withSMS Von der Tann, but I couldn't tell what was wrong withSMS Beowulf, so Iredid the conversion and that seemed to have worked. I assume the template didn't like the fact that I had left the empty parameter behind? This is mainly why I started converting boxes, by the way, to figure out exactly how to use them and what I need to be careful with.Parsecboy (talk)10:26, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Editthis version of SMSBeowulf then clickShow preview. The new infoboxen add messages to the edit preview message box when an unrecognized parameter with assigned value is detected; empty unrecognized parameters are ignored.
|Hide header=yes was the parameter that caused the article to be added toCategory:Pages using infobox ship with unknown parameters. The new form is|hide_header=yes.

Help - I found an AI written page

[edit]

Hi there,

As I was using AV, I saw that the pageUser:IbnWeber/Chechen Volunteer Corps seems to have been written by an LLM, as the editor had left some of the AI responsehere.

However, since it is not a mainspace page, I didn't really know what to do, except leave a somewhat assured message on the user's talk page.

I was wondering if you knew what to do (as I saw you were an admin), maybe I am just being a bit OTT.

Thanks,
Pr0m37h3u$15:32, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, it seems like the editor is creating hoax pages - almost all of their contributions so far have been to seemingly fictional paramilitary units (User:IbnWeber/The Chechen Crescent,User:IbnWeber/26th "Basayev" Regiment, andUser:IbnWeber/Chechen Volunteer Corps) and all refer to the "PNF/Protactive Notorious Fighters", which is apparentlysome faction in a Roblox game. There's nothing inherently wrong with them playing around in their userspace, but we ought to keep an eye on any attempts to insert this stuff into article space.Parsecboy (talk)17:20, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
