Hi. This is with regards tothis deletionI think that the List of 118 titles should stay since the Guinness Book has recently cited this record. Others may be vying for this category as well and referencing it is appropriate. Thank you.—Precedingunsigned comment added by222.127.216.68 (talk)06:39, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

THY Flight 1951

[edit]

And neither do we need to say "rescuers arrived very -quickly- on the scene" either, as this is not true. My uncle was on the plane and was lightly injured, he made it out of the plane himself like many passengers. More than 50 of them were out before any rescue team made it from 2000m afar. He says something like 30minutes, as do the newspapers.—Precedingunsigned comment added by85.99.6.50 (talk)19:49, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

-Yes he did (slightly scratched, but quite ok, also helped some other passengers while there), and I am sorry if I am still nervous after that, emotions are strong in our house now. Thanks for toning the article anyway, oh and for the hangar thing, I think it will appear on the press as of tomorrow, as many passengers complained to the journalists about.

---85.99.6.50 (talk)20:08, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

--Yes, an empty stable indeed, the TV press covered it in the news tonight in Turkey. But why do you think, of all things, a stable??? --85.99.6.50 (talk)23:41, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That seems plausible, and is I think the best explanation until now, should we put it in the article? Anyways, look, there's someone that removed again my sourced information + my sources with "help came very quickly according to eyewitnesses" and gave two sources, one that does not cite at all any "quick" help, and another that does not take into account any "eyewitness". Now what should I do? Get angry?? :( --85.99.6.50 (talk)23:49, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aecis, do you agree with my thesis/antithesis proposal athttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Turkish_Airlines_Flight_1951#Response_time_emergency_services ?If yes, please let me know so I can put it to that new format.--85.99.6.50 (talk)00:41, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here in Turkey, there's that rumor that more people could have been possibly saved with an on-time intervention. Also, thefirst thing about which my uncle and other survivors (that aired on the TV here) all complained was the time of arrival of the rescue teams. So I do not think it is "not of importance". Unless you think it could tarnish the image of the Dutch 112, but that is another matter. --85.99.6.50 (talk)00:58, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, you are right on this one. It's better to wait for things to decantate a little with time.-85.99.6.50 (talk)01:22, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article of the month - 2008 Chinese Grand Prix, newGood Article

The2008 Chinese Grand Prix (formally theV Sinopec Chinese Grand Prix) was aFormula One motor race held on October 19, 2008 at theShanghai International Circuit,Shanghai,China. It was the 17th and penultimate race of the2008 Formula One season. The race, contested over 56 laps, was won byLewis Hamilton for theMcLaren team after starting frompole position.Ferrari driverFelipe Massa finished second, andKimi Räikkönen was third in the other Ferrari.

Hamilton, the eventualDrivers' Champion, led the Championship going into the race, and started frompole position alongside Räikkönen. Second in the Drivers' Championship, Massa began from third, next toFernando Alonso ofRenault. The first three drivers retained their positions into the first corner, but Alonso was passed by Hamilton's McLaren teammateHeikki Kovalainen. However, Alonso was able to regain the place midway through the first lap. Over the course of the race, Hamilton extended a considerable lead over the two Ferraris. Massa passed Räikkönen with seven laps remaining, to improve his chances of surpassing Hamilton'spoints tally atthe final race in Brazil.

The result extended Ferrari's lead over McLaren in theConstructors' Championship from seven to 11 points. Third-placed in the Drivers' Championship,Robert Kubica's sixth place at the Grand Prix eliminated his hopes of winning the Championship, and reduced his lead over fourth-placed Räikkönen to six points.

Article of the month -2008 German Grand Prix, current Good Article Candidate.

The2008 German Grand Prix (formally theLXVIII Großer Preis Santander von Deutschland) was aFormula One motor race held on July 20, 2008 at theHockenheimring,Hockenheim,Germany. It was the 10th race of the2008 Formula One season. The race, contested over 67 laps, was won byLewis Hamilton for theMcLaren team after starting frompole position.Nelson Piquet, Jr. finished second in aRenault car, withFelipe Massa third in aFerrari.

Hamilton maintained his startline advantage and led until he made his first pit stop on lap 18. As other cars made their pit stops, Hamilton regained the lead on lap 22. On lap 36Timo Glock crashed, and the race was neutralized by the deployment of thesafety car. Hamilton, on a two-stop strategy, did not stop to get more fuel during this period, while all the cars around him did. Thus when he did eventually stop on lap 50, he rejoined the race in fifth. In the closing stages of the race, Hamilton overtook first his team-mateHeikki Kovalainen, then Massa, and finally Piquet, to take the lead again on lap 60, which he maintained to win the race.

The victory was Hamilton's second consecutive win, having won the precedingBritish Grand Prix atSilverstone. The win put him ahead of his two main rivals in theDrivers' Championship,Kimi Räikkönen (who finished sixth) and Massa of Ferrari, who were on equal points with him before the race. After the race he was four points ahead of Räikkönen, and seven ahead of Massa. In theConstructors' Championship, McLaren drew closer to the two teams ahead of them,BMW Sauber and Ferrari. Ferrari still led by 15 points from McLaren, and 12 from BMW, whose drivers –Nick Heidfeld andRobert Kubica – finished fourth and seventh respectively.

Article of the month -2008 Turkish Grand Prix, newGood Article

The2008 Turkish Grand Prix (formally theIV Petrol Ofisi Turkish Grand Prix) was aFormula One motor race held on May 11, 2008 at theIstanbul Racing Circuit,Istanbul,Turkey. It was the fifth race of the2008 Formula One season. The race, contested over 58 laps, was won byFelipe Massa for theFerrari team after starting frompole position.Lewis Hamilton finished second in aMcLaren, withKimi Räikkönen third in the second Ferrari.

Massa claimed pole, with teammate Räikkönen fourth, the two Ferrari cars sandwiching the McLarens ofHeikki Kovalainen and Hamilton. At the first corner Räikkönen clipped Kovalainen's rear tyre and gave him a puncture. The safety car was deployed on the first lap, after a collision, but only remained out for one lap. During the course of the race, Hamilton, intending to make one more pit stop than both Ferrari drivers, was faster than Massa due to carrying a lighter fuel load and overtook him on lap 24. After Hamilton had made his third pit stop, he rejoined in second behind Massa but in front of the Championship leader, Räikkönen. Massa won the race, with Hamilton 3.779 seconds behind, and Räikkönen a further half-second behind. The twoBMW Sauber cars ofRobert Kubica andNick Heidfeld took fourth and fifth.

In the week running up to the grand prix, theSuper Aguri team had withdrawn from Formula One, due to financial problems, leaving the sport with only ten teams. Massa's victory was his third consecutive pole position and victory inTurkey, having also won the race from pole in2006 and2007. This was alsoRubens Barrichello's 257th Grand Prix start, breakingRiccardo Patrese's previous record of 256. Due to the race result, Räikkönen's lead in theDrivers' Championship was lowered to seven points. Massa rose to second from fourth, whilst Hamilton dropped to third, both drivers tying on 28 points but separated by Massa's two wins thus far to Hamilton's one. In theConstructors' Championship, Ferrari increased their lead to 22 points ahead of BMW Sauber, with McLaren a further two points behind in third.

And there were lots of lesbian bands at the time, and we always got booked with them, so we just thought the Pixies were another, like maybe they were like angry divorcees or somthing that formed a band.'" -Kristin Hersh

Article of the month -2008 Monaco Grand Prix, newFeatured Article

The2008 Monaco Grand Prix (formally theLXVI Grand Prix de Monaco) was aFormula One motor race held on May 25, 2008 at theCircuit de Monaco; contested over 76 laps, it was the sixth race of the2008 Formula One season. The race was won by the season's eventualDrivers' Champion,Lewis Hamilton, for theMcLaren team.BMW Sauber driverRobert Kubica finished second, andFelipe Massa, who started frompole position, was third in aFerrari.

Conditions were wet at the start of the race. Massa maintained his lead into the first corner, but his teammateKimi Räikkönen was passed for second by Hamilton, who had started in third position on thegrid. Hamilton suffered a puncturedtyre on lap six, forcing him to make apit stop from which he re-entered the race in fifth place. As the track dried and his rivals made their own pit stops Hamilton became the race leader, a position he held until the end of the race. Kubica's strategy allowed him to pass Massa during their second pit stops, after the latter's Ferrari was forced to change from wet to dry tyres. Räikkönen dropped back from fifth position to ninth after colliding withAdrian Sutil'sForce India late in the race. Sutil had started from 18th on the grid and was in fourth position before the incident, which allowedRed Bull driverMark Webber to finish fourth, ahead ofToro Rosso driverSebastian Vettel in fifth.

The race was Hamilton's second win of the season, his first in Monaco, and the result meant that he led the Drivers' Championship, sevenpoints ahead of Räikkönen and eight ahead of Massa. Ferrari maintained their lead in theConstructors' Championship, 16 points ahead of McLaren and 17 ahead of BMW Sauber, with 12 races of the season remaining.

Article of the month -2008 French Grand Prix, currentGood Article nominee.

The2008 French Grand Prix (formally theXCIII Grand Prix de France) was aFormula One motor race held on June 22, 2008 at theCircuit de Nevers Magny-Cours,France. It was the eighth race of the2008 Formula One season. The race, contested over 70 laps, was won byFelipe Massa for theFerrari team after starting from second position.Kimi Räikkönen, who started frompole position, finished second in the other Ferrari car;Jarno Trulli was third in aToyota.

Räikkönen and Massa both made a clean start.Renault'sFernando Alonso, who started third, was overtaken by Trulli andBMW Sauber driverRobert Kubica. The front three of Räikkönen, Massa and Trulli maintained their positions through the first round ofpit stops. On lap 30, Räikkönen led Massa by six and a half seconds, and Trulli by 30 seconds. Just before half distance, Räikkönen's right exhaust pipe broke, which caused the engine to lose power. Massa, in second place, began lapping quicker than Räikkönen, and he caught and passed him on lap 39. Massa maintained his lead through the second round of pit stops, and won the race; Räikkönen finished almost 18 seconds behind. Trulli fended offMcLaren'sHeikki Kovalainen, who challenged him in the latter stages, to take third.

Massa's win promoted him into the lead of theDrivers' Championship for the first time in his career, overtaking Kubica. Kubica was second, two points behind Massa, while Räikkönen was third. In theConstructors' Championship, Ferrari increased their lead to 17 points ahead of BMW Sauber, McLaren a further 16 points behind in third.

Article of the month -Brabham BT46, currentGood Article, after reassessment.

TheBrabham BT46 was aFormula Oneracing car, designed byGordon Murray for theBrabham team, owned byBernie Ecclestone, for the1978 Formula One season. The car featured several radical design elements, the most obvious of which was the use of flat panel heat exchangers on the bodywork of the car to replace conventional water and oilradiators. The concept did not work in practice and was removed before the car’s race debut, never to be seen again. The cars, powered by aflat-12Alfa Romeo engine, raced competitively with modified nose-mounted radiators for most of the year, driven byNiki Lauda andJohn Watson, winning one race in this form and scoring sufficient points for the team to finish third in the constructors championship.

The "B" variant of the car, also known as the "fan car", was introduced at the1978 Swedish Grand Prix as a counter to the dominant ground effectLotus 79. The BT46B generated an immense level ofdownforce by means of a fan, claimed to be for increased cooling, but which also extracted air from beneath the car. The car only raced once in this configuration in the Formula One World Championship—when Niki Lauda won the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix atAnderstorp. The car was withdrawn before it could race again and the concept was declared illegal by theFIA. The BT46B therefore preserves a 100% winning record.

Nick Heidfeld's record run of 41 consecutive race classifications was ended at the2009 Singapore Grand Prix when he collided withAdrian Sutil.

Article of the month -1995 British Grand Prix, currently listed for aPeer Review.

The1995 British Grand Prix (formally theXLVIII British Grand Prix) was aFormula One motor race held on July 16, 1995 atSilverstone Circuit,Silverstone,Northamptonshire,England. It was the eighth round of the1995 Formula One season. The race, contested over 61 laps, was won byJohnny Herbert for theBenetton team after starting from fifth position.Jean Alesi finished second in aFerrari, withDavid Coulthard third in aWilliams car. Herbert's victory was his first in Formula One, and the Benetton team's fifth of the season.

The race was dominated, however, by the fight between championship protagonistsMichael Schumacher (Benetton) andDamon Hill (Williams). Hill, who started frompole position, retained his lead during the opening stages of the race whilst Schumacher, who started alongside him on the grid, fell behind Alesi in the run to the first corner. Despite being held up behind the slower Ferrari until it pitted, Schumacher used a more favourable one-stop strategy to move ahead of Hill, who made two pit stops for fuel and tyres, on lap 41. Four laps later, Hill attempted to pass Schumacher, but the two collided and were forced to retire from the race. This promoted the battling Herbert and Coulthard into the fight for the lead. Coulthard passed Herbert, but dropped back to third after incurring astop-go penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Article of the month -DAMS GD-01, currentPeer Review nominee

TheDAMS GD-01 was an unracedFormula One car used by theFrenchmotorsport team,Driot-Arnoux Motor Sport (DAMS). The GD-01 was designed and built by a collaboration of DAMS andReynard engineers from 1994 to 1995, and was intended to establish the team—which had achieved considerable success in lower categories—in Formula One, but a continuing lack of finance meant that the team never entered the championship, despite completing construction of the chassis and conducting some testing.

Article of the month -Fittipaldi Automotive, current Good Article Review

Fittipaldi Automotive, sometimes calledCopersucar after its first major sponsor, was the onlyFormula One motor racing team and constructor ever to be based inBrazil. It was formed during 1974 by racing driverWilson Fittipaldi and his younger brother, double world championEmerson, with money from the Brazilian sugar and alcohol cooperativeCopersucar. In 1976 Emerson surprised the motor racing world by leaving the title-winningMcLaren team to drive for the unsuccessful family outfit. Future world championKeke Rosberg took his first podium finish in Formula One with the team.

The team was based inSão Paulo, almost 6,000 miles (10,000 km) away from the centre of the world motor racing industry in the UK, before moving toReading,UK during 1974. It participated in 119 grands prix between 1975 and 1982, entering a total of 156 cars. It achieved 3 podiums and scored 44 championship points.

Article of the month -2008 Hungarian Grand Prix, currentPeer Review candidate.

The2008 Hungarian Grand Prix (formally theXXIII ING Magyar Nagydíj) was aFormula One motor race held on August 3, 2008 at theHungaroring,Budapest,Hungary. It was the eleventh race of the2008 Formula One season. The race, contested over 70 laps, was won byHeikki Kovalainen for theMcLaren team after starting from second position.Timo Glock finished second in aToyota car, withKimi Räikkönen third in aFerrari. It marked Kovalainen's first Formula One victory, which made him the sport's 100th driver to win a World Championship race, and it was also Glock's first podium finish.

Much of the race, however, was dominated by a duel betweenLewis Hamilton andFelipe Massa, who drove for McLaren and Ferrari respectively. Hamilton started frompole position on the starting grid but was beaten into the first corner by Massa, who passed him around the outside. The two championship protagonists commenced a battle for the lead that was resolved when Hamilton suffered apuncture just over half-way through the race, giving Massa a comfortable lead. The Ferrari's engine, however, failed with three laps of the race remaining, allowing Kovalainen to take the win.

Article of the month -List of Formula One drivers, kept atFeatured List status after review

Formula One, abbreviated to F1, is the highest class ofopen-wheeledauto racing defined by theFédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body. The "formula" in the name refers to a set of rules to which all participants and cars must conform. The F1 world championship season consists of a series of races, known asGrands Prix, held usually on purpose-builtcircuits, and in a few cases on closed city streets. Drivers are awarded points based on their position in each race, and the driver who accumulates the most points over each calendar year is crowned that year'sWorld Champion. As of the2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, there have been 820 FIAWorld Championship races since its first event, the1950 British Grand Prix.

Seven-time championMichael Schumacher holds the record for the most championships, while his 91 wins, 154 podium finishes and 68 pole positions are also records.Rubens Barrichello has entered more Grands Prix than anyone else—288 times in total—as well as having made an unsurpassed 284 race starts. TheUnited Kingdom is the most represented nation, having produced a total of 157 different drivers. Eight nations have been represented by just one.Poland became the latest country to be represented by a driver whenRobert Kubica made hisFormula One debut at the2006 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Grand Prix 2, sometimes known as "GP2" and sold in theAmerican market asGrand Prix II, is aracing simulator released byMicroProse in1996. It was made under an official FIA license that featured theFormula One1994 season, with all of the circuits, teams, drivers and cars. The cars were painted with liveries reflecting the races that did not allow tobacco and beer sponsors (i.e.1994 French Grand Prix).

It had 3D texture mapping andSVGA graphics, as well as an early but realistic physicsengine. A large community of GP2 enthusiasts formed quickly and still exists today.Grand Prix 2 is recognized as one of the definitive racing simulations of its era.

Article of the month -2008 Hungarian Grand Prix, currentFeatured Article candidate.

The2008 Hungarian Grand Prix (formally theXXIII ING Magyar Nagydíj) was aFormula One motor race held on August 3, 2008, atHungaroring inMogyoród, nearBudapest,Hungary. It was the 11th race of the2008 Formula One season. Contested over 70 laps, the race was won byHeikki Kovalainen for theMcLaren team, from a second position start.Timo Glock finished second in aToyota car, withKimi Räikkönen third in aFerrari. It marked Kovalainen's first Formula One victory, which made him the sport's 100th driver to win a World Championship race, and Glock's first podium finish.

Much of the race, however, was dominated by a duel betweenLewis Hamilton andFelipe Massa, who drove for McLaren and Ferrari respectively. Hamilton started frompole position on the starting grid but was beaten at the first corner by Massa, who passed him around the outside. The two championship protagonists commenced a battle for the lead that was resolved when Hamilton suffered apuncture just over half-way through the race, giving Massa a comfortable lead. The Ferrari's engine, however, failed with three laps of the race remaining, allowing Kovalainen to take the win.

Article of the month –Ayrton Senna, current B-Class article.

Ayrton Senna da Silva, (pronounced[aˈiɾtõˈsenɐdaˈsiwvɐ];São Paulo, March 21, 1960, –BolognaItaly May 1, 1994) was aBrazilian racing driver and three-timeFormula Oneworld champion. He was killed in a crash while leading the1994 San Marino Grand Prix, and remains the most recent Grand Prix driver to die at the wheel of a Formula One car.

Senna began his motorsport career inkarting and moved up the ranks to win theBritish Formula 3 championship in 1983. Making his Formula One debut withToleman in1984, he moved toLotus-Renault the followingyear, and won six Grands Prix over the next three seasons. In1988 he joined FrenchmanAlain Prost atMcLaren-Honda. Between them, Senna and Prost won fifteen out of the sixteen Grands Prix which took place that season, with Senna winning his firstWorld Championship, a title he would go on to win again in1990 and1991. McLaren's performance declined in1992, as theWilliams-Renault combination began to dominate the sport, although Senna won five races to finish as runner-up in1993. He moved to Williams in1994, but suffered afatal accident at the third race of the season at theAutodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Italy.

Senna is regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula One. In 2009, a poll of 217 current and formerFormula One drivers chose Senna as their greatest Formula One driver, in a survey conducted by British magazineAutosport. He was recognised for his qualifying speed over one lap and from1989 until2006 held the record for mostpole positions. He was among the most talented drivers in extremely rain-affected conditions, as shown by his performances in the1984 Monaco Grand Prix, the1985 Portuguese Grand Prix, and the1993 European Grand Prix. He also holds the record for most victories at the prestigiousMonaco Grand Prix (6) and is the third most successful driver of all time in terms ofrace wins. However, Senna courted controversy throughout his career, particularly during his turbulent rivalry withAlain Prost, which was marked by two championship-deciding collisions at the1989 and1990 Japanese Grands Prix.

Mark Webber became the first driver sinceKimi Räikkönen in2005 to win two consecutive races by leading every lap in the process, when he won theSpanish andMonaco Grands Prix.
Article of the month –Bruce McLaren, current Start-Class article.

Bruce Leslie McLaren (30 August 1937 – 2 June 1970), born inAuckland,New Zealand, was a race-car designer, driver, engineer and inventor.

His name lives on in theMcLaren team which has been one of the most successful inFormula One championship history, with McLaren cars and drivers winning a total of 20 world championships. McLaren cars totally dominatedCanAm sports car racing with 56 wins, a considerable number of them with him behind the wheel, between 1967 and 1972 (and five constructors’ championships), and have won threeIndianapolis 500 races, as well as24 Hours of Le Mans and12 Hours of Sebring.

As a nine year old, McLaren contractedPerthes disease in his hip which left his left leg shorter than the right. He spent two years in traction, but later often had a slight limp.

Les and Ruth McLaren, his parents, owned a service station and workshop inRemuera,Auckland. Bruce spent all of his free hours hanging around the workshop. The McLaren family homestead is located in Ngaruawahia in the Northern Waikato region and still stands today.

Suspension of admin privileges due to inactivity

      [edit]

Following acommunity discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative privileges of users who have been inactive for one year, meaning administrators who have made neither any edits nor any logged actions in over one year. As a result of this discussion, your administrative privileges have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these privileges reinstated, please post to theWikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per there-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts.RL0919 (talk)19:54, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
