For colors, etc. I try to followWikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps. For sources - if you have GIS software you can go use[1] for the rivers and[2] for boundaries. If you don't have GIS try using the Online Map Creation at[3] and then cleaning up the map in a graphics program like Photoshop.
