TheUrola is a river and valley inGipuzkoa,Basque Autonomous Community, Spain.
The river is only 55 kilometres in length, and runs from headwaters in theAizkorri Mountains,[1] near the town ofLegazpi to its outflow into theCantabrian Sea at the town ofZumaia on theBay of Biscay . It forms the border between the municipalities ofZumárraga andUrretxu, and further downriver, it passes through the towns ofAzkoitia andAzpeitia.
The wordurola comes from two basque wordsUr andOla, meaning "water" and "factory" respectively referring to the water mills which have stood in the valley since the Middle Ages.
