It bore the traditional nameTheemin (also written asTheemim andBeemin).[10] In 2016, theInternational Astronomical Union organized aWorking Group on Star Names (WGSN)[11] to catalogue and standardize proper names for stars. The WGSN approved the nameTheemin for this star on February 1, 2017, and it is now included in the List of IAU-approved Star Names.[9]
In theAlmagest, Ptolemy called ithē kampē, "the bend in the river;" Arab writers corrupted this tobhmn, later becomingbeemin,beemun in the West. Subsequently, its etymology was incorrectly derived from Hebrew תאומים (te'omim), meaning "twins," producingTheemin.[12][13]
