Upper Rhenish Circle 1791

TheUpper Rhenish Circle (German:Oberrheinischer Reichskreis) was animperial circle of theHoly Roman Empire established in 1500 on the territory of the formerDuchy of Upper Lorraine and large parts ofRhenish Franconia including theSwabianAlsace region and theBurgundianduchy of Savoy. Many of the circle's states west of theRhine river were annexed byFrance under KingLouis XIV during the 17th century, sealed by the 1678/79Treaties of Nijmegen.
