TheUnzha (Russian:Унжа) is a river in theVologda andKostroma oblasts ofRussia. It is atributary of theVolga, which it enters at theGorky Reservoir. It is 426 kilometres (265 mi) long, and itsbasin covers 27,800 square kilometres (10,700 mi2).[1] The Unzha begins at theconfluence of the riversKema and theLundonga. It flows into the UnzhenskyCove of the Gorky Reservoir.
The Unzha freezes up between October and December and stays under the ice until April or May. The main tributaries are theViga,Neya, and theMezha. The towns ofKologriv,Manturovo andMakaryev are along the Unzha River.[citation needed]
