TheUniversity of Constantine 1 (inArabic:جامعة قسنطينة 1), formerly known asUniversity of Frères Mentouri Constantine 1, is apublic university located inConstantine, Algeria. Designed by Brazilian architectOscar Niemeyer,[1] the university was established in 1969.[2][3]
The University is located in the city ofConstantine, on the road connectingMohamed Boudiaf Airport to the city center. With an area of 544,660 m², spread over 13 campuses, 6 faculties, and 38 departments, it offers more than 98 specializations.
The University of Mentouri Constantine was established byDecree No. 69-54 issued on June 17, 1969,[4] during the reign of the late PresidentHouari Boumediene. This is an important date for the university, as it gained its independence after having been a university center affiliated with theUniversity of Algiers, whose mission was limited to teaching a limited number of disciplines such as literature and law.
The project of the university was commissioned by PresidentHouari Boumedienne, who remained in power from 1965 to 1978, and coordinated by theMinister of Higher Education and Scientific ResearchSeddik Benyahia (1971-1977).[5]
The university was designed according to the plans of Brazilian architectOscar Niemeyer (who was in contact with the Ecotec design office headed by Mr. Mehnaoui Abdelhamid) and built by the Ecotec company,The university consists of more than 6 buildings:[5][6]
