'Seiju' is described as smaller thanCatlin and faster growing thanHokkaido, distinguished from the latter by its larger leaves.[2]
The species and its cultivars are highly resistant, but not immune, toDutch elm disease, and unaffected by the Elm Leaf BeetleXanthogaleruca luteola.[3]
The tree is commercially available in the United States and Australia where it is popular as abonsai subject.[4] The tree was also listed in the UK until 2002.
