
Ujué (Uxue in Basque) is a town andmunicipality located in the province and autonomous community ofNavarre, northernSpain.
According to legend, the town was founded when a shepherd saw adove entering a hole in the rocks; peering inside he found an image of theVirgin Mary. The name of the town comes fromUxua (dialectal Uxue), theBasque language word for "dove".
The 12th century fortified church ofSanta María de Ujué stands on the highest point of the town; it is a fine example ofRomanesque architecture, withGothic additions. The church is listed as aNational Monument.[1] Interred in the church is the heart ofCharles II of Navarre.[2]
