Uelzen (German pronunciation:[ˈʏltsn̩]) is adistrict (Landkreis) inLower Saxony,Germany. It is bounded by (from the south and clockwise) the districts ofGifhorn,Celle,Heidekreis,Lüneburg andLüchow-Dannenberg, and by the state ofSaxony-Anhalt (district ofAltmarkkreis Salzwedel). The district capital is the town ofUelzen.

History

From theMiddle Ages on the region was part of the duchy ofBrunswick-Lüneburg and itssuccessor states.

Geography

The district comprises the eastern part of theLüneburg Heath (Lüneburger Heide). TheIlmenau river has its source in the district. From here it runs northwards to the town ofLüneburg. The countryside is flat and sparsely populated.
