U with diaeresis (Ӱ ӱ; italics:Ӱ ӱ) is a letter of theCyrillic script,[1] derived from theCyrillic letter U (У у У у).
U with diaeresis is used in the alphabets of theAltai,Khakas,Khanty,Mari andShor languages, where it represents theclose front rounded vowel/y/, the pronunciation of theLatin letter U with umlaut (Ü ü) in German. It is also used in theKomi-Yodzyak language.
The Cyrillic U with diaeresis was formally used in theRusyn language[2] and used in the Cyrillization ofAlbanian.
It is also used in theRussian language in loanwords.[3]
