Overview

[edit]

UNICAF was founded by Greek Cypriot entrepreneur Nicos Nicolaou in 2012 and is headquartered inLarnaca,[2] specifically whereLarnaca Airport was located before the airport moved its terminal to new buildings in 2009.[3] Its name is a combination of "UNIC", the official abbreviation for theUniversity of Nicosia, and the first two letters of "Africa". While initially focusing solely on African students, it has expanded its range to offer scholarships to students worldwide, provided they meet certain academic and financial criteria in addition to their country of residence.[4]

UNICAF has established branch campuses and learning centres in African nations such asSouth Africa, the DRC,Egypt,Ghana,Kenya,Malawi,Morocco,Nigeria,Uganda,Zambia, andZimbabwe. Since its inception, it has enrolled more than 60,000 students in its partnership programs.[5] It has set up learning centres which includedigital libraries, computer labs, online access, and generators to help students access its platform.[6] It offers a number ofbachelor's,master's, anddoctorate programs in fields such as business, mass communication, computing, education, health, law, and psychology.[7] It has a physical presence in 12 African countries and a number of branch campuses to accommodate students from Africa and elsewhere.[8][9] The campuses aim to provide student services and face-to-face tutorials to support the online and blended delivery models. Its scholarship program is available to all of its university students who are interested.[8]

UNICAF is accredited by each of the respective regulators and by theBritish Accreditation Council.[10] As of December 2024, it has partnerships with the British universitiesLiverpool John Moores University, theUniversity of East London, and theUniversity of Suffolk.[11]
