UFC on ESPN: Ngannou vs. dos Santos (also known asUFC on ESPN 3) was amixed martial arts event produced by theUltimate Fighting Championship that was held on June 29, 2019, atTarget Center inMinneapolis,Minnesota, USA.[2][3]

Background

[edit]

The event was the promotion's third visit to Minneapolis and the first sinceUFC on FX: Browne vs. Bigfoot in October 2012.[3]

A welterweight rematch between the formerUFC Welterweight ChampionsTyron Woodley andRobbie Lawler was expected to be the event headliner.[4] Woodley won the title in their first encounter via first-round knockout in July 2016 atUFC 201.[5] However, it was reported on May 16, 2019, that Woodley had suffered a hand injury and was pulled out of the fight. As a result, Lawler was removed from the card as well.[6] Subsequently, a heavyweight bout between the formerUFC Heavyweight ChampionJunior dos Santos and former title challengerFrancis Ngannou was scheduled as the event headliner instead. The pairing had been scheduled twice before, first atUFC 215 and then atUFC 239, but in both instances the fights were scrapped.[7]

A light heavyweight bout betweenRoman Dolidze andVinicius Moreira was scheduled to take place at the event. However, an unknown reason saw Dolidze pull out of the fight on May 7 and he was replaced byEryk Anders.[8]

A featherweight bout betweenChas Skelly andJordan Griffin was originally scheduled for this event. However, on June 13, Skelly pulled out of the fight citing injury.[9] Griffin was then booked to face promotional newcomer Vince Murdock.[10] On June 27, Murdock announced that he was not medically cleared to compete and the bout was removed from the card.[11] On September 5, 2019, it was reported that Murdock had received a 20-month suspension byUSADA, having tested positive forGW1516, better known asCardarine and often sold on the black market asEndurobol, on a sample collected on July 6, 2019.[12] Later in 2019, Murdock revealed that the reason behind withdrawing from the bout was initially high gradestenosis which was later diagnosed asMoyamoya disease.[13]

A bantamweight bout betweenSergio Pettis andRicardo Ramos was scheduled to take place at this event but, on June 15, it was reported that Pettis had pulled out of the bout for undisclosed reasons and had been replaced by newcomerJourney Newson.[14][10]

A light heavyweight bout betweenJustin Ledet andDalcha Lungiambula was scheduled to take place at this event but, on June 24, it was announced that Ledet was removed from the card.[15] He was replaced by promotional newcomerDequan Townsend.[16]
