UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Harris was a plannedmixed martial arts event produced by theUltimate Fighting Championship originally planned to take place on April 11, 2020 atModa Center inPortland, Oregon, United States.[1] Due to theCOVID-19 pandemic, the event was eventually postponed.[2]
The event was expected to be the third that the organization hosted in Portland, followingUFC 102 in August 2009 andUFC Fight Night: Lineker vs. Dodson in October 2016.[1]
A heavyweight bout between the former2010 K-1 World Grand Prix Champion,Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion andUFC Heavyweight Championship challengerAlistair Overeem andWalt Harris was expected to serve as the event headliner.[1] The pairing had previously been scheduled to headlineUFC on ESPN: Overeem vs. Rozenstruik on December 7, 2019 but Harris pulled out of the fight in early November, citing the disappearance anddeath of his stepdaughter in her home state ofAlabama.[3][4]
A middleweight bout between Abu Azaitar andAlessio Di Chirico was scheduled for the event.[5] However, Azaitar was pulled from the event for an undisclosed reason and replaced byMarkus Perez.[6]
A middleweight bout betweenDerek Brunson andEdmen Shahbazyan was initially scheduled forUFC 248.[7] However, it was announced on February 20 that the bout had been rescheduled and would serve as the co-headliner for this event.[8]
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,OregongovernorKate Brown issued an order restricting mass gatherings and sporting events on March 12, thus the UFC decided to move the event toLas Vegas where it would take placebehind closed doors at theUFC APEX facility.[9] UFC presidentDana White then announced on March 15 that this event would have to be moved once again as theNevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) decided to provisionally ban events until March 25, when a new meeting would discuss future plans in what could jeopardize this event's realization.[10] On March 16, it was confirmed that the event was postponed after a letter from White to employees was shared with the public.[2] This was the first time that the promotion was forced to cancel events due tovis major. The UFC also cancelled two events scheduled forMarch 21 and28.[11] White assured on March 24 that all cancelled fights will be rescheduled for future events.[12]
