The event was the first that the promotion hosted in Raleigh and first inNorth Carolina sinceUFC on Fox: Jacaré vs. Brunson 2 in January 2018.[2]
A heavyweight bout betweenCurtis Blaydes and formerUFC Heavyweight ChampionJunior dos Santos served as the event headliner.[3]
A bantamweight bout was scheduled between formerUFC Lightweight ChampionFrankie Edgar andCory Sandhagen at the event. However, Edgar was withdrawn from the fight in favour of facingChan Sung Jung in a featherweight bout atUFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. The Korean Zombie after Jung's original opponent, former featherweight title challengerBrian Ortega, pulled out due to a knee injury.[4] In turn, Sandhagen was removed from the card and expected to be rescheduled for a future event after promotion officials deemed that a suitable opponent could not be arranged.[5]
A middleweight bout betweenBevon Lewis and Alen Amedovski was scheduled to take place at the event. However, Amedovski was forced to pull out of the event citing injury and was replaced byDequan Townsend.[6]
A strawweight bout betweenHannah Cifers andBrianna Van Buren was scheduled to take place at the event. However, Van Buren was pulled from the event due to undisclosed reasons and replaced by formerInvicta FC Strawweight ChampionAngela Hill.[7]
Featherweight fightersJosh Emmett andNad Narimani pulled out of their scheduled fights againstArnold Allen andNik Lentz respectively, citing injuries.[8] As a result, Allen and Lentz faced each other at the event.[9]
