The main event was a UFC & Pride FC middleweight title unification match betweenUFC middleweight championAnderson Silva andPRIDE FC welterweight championDan Henderson.[3]

A welterweight matchup betweenJon Fitch andAkihiro Gono was originally scheduled, but Gono was forced to withdraw after suffering a hand injury in training.[4] Gono was replaced byChris Wilson.[5] The Fitch/Gono match up was eventually rescheduled forUFC 94.

Diego Sanchez was originally scheduled to facedRoan Carneiro but an undisclosed illness forced out Carneiro.[6]David Bielkheden replaced Carneiro.

At the event, former UFC heavyweight championMark Coleman was inducted into theUFC Hall of Fame.[7]
