The card also featured aUFC Lightweight Championship bout betweenThe Ultimate Fighter alumnusKenny Florian and longtimeUFC veteranSean Sherk. It was the firstLightweight Championship bout sinceUFC 41 in 2003, whenB.J. Penn andCaol Uno fought to a draw.

A planned match betweenKeith Jardine and Mike Nickels was cancelled a day before the event when Nickels reaggravated a previous back injury sustained during training. A replacement could not be found on short notice.[4]

Clay Guida made hisUFC debut at this event.
