An interimUFC Heavyweight Championship bout between former title challengerDerrick Lewis andCiryl Gane headlined the event.[2] The original plan was to feature current championFrancis Ngannou defending his title against Lewis, but the promotion opted to move forward with the interim contest due to the alleged refusal of the champion to defend it in August (despite winning the championship just over four months earlier and claiming he was available for his first defense in September).[3]
AUFC Women's Bantamweight Championship bout between the current championAmanda Nunes (also the currentUFC Women's Featherweight Champion) andThe Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate bantamweight winnerJulianna Peña was expected to take place at the event.[4] However on July 29, the bout was pulled due to Nunestesting positive for COVID-19. The bout was rescheduled forUFC 269.[5]
Johnny Muñoz Jr. and Jamey Simmons were expected to meet in a bantamweight bout atUFC 261, but the latter pulled out due to undisclosed reasons.[6] They were later rescheduled for this event.[7]
A middleweight bout betweenUriah Hall andSean Strickland was expected to take place at this event.[8] However, the pairing was moved to the week prior and headlinedUFC on ESPN: Hall vs. Strickland.[9]
A women's strawweight rematch betweenTecia Torres and formerInvicta FC Strawweight ChampionAngela Hill took place at this event.[10] The pairing met previously atUFC 188 in June 2015, when Torres won by unanimous decision.[11] The rematch was originally scheduled to take place in December 2020 atUFC 256, but Hilltested positive for COVID-19 during the week leading up to the event and was removed from the bout.[12]
A bantamweight bout betweenMiles Johns andAnderson dos Santos took place at this event.[13] The pair was scheduled to meet atUFC on ESPN: Makhachev vs. Moisés, but it was removed just hours before the show due to COVID-19 protocol issues stemming from dos Santos' camp.[14]
