Junior dos Santos fought Shane Carwin in the main event ofUFC 131.

Brock Lesnar was originally scheduled to faceJunior dos Santos after their coaching stint onThe Ultimate Fighter 13, but due to a recurring illness, Lesnar was replaced byShane Carwin.[4] Originally, a matchup between Carwin,[5] andJon Olav Einemo was scheduled for this event. Einemo remained on the card and facedDave Herman, who was pulled from a matchup withJoey Beltran as a result. Beltran was matched up withAaron Rosa.

Court McGee was scheduled to fight Jesse Bongfeldt, but was forced to pull out due to a tornMCL while training and was replaced byChris Weidman[6][7]

Rani Yahya was scheduled faceDustin Poirier at this event, but withdrew due to injury on 3 May 2011 and was replaced by UFC newcomerJason Young.[8]

Anthony Perosh was expected to faceKrzysztof Soszynski at this event, but Perosh was forced from the bout with an injury and replaced byIgor Pokrajac.[9] However, Pokrajac was forced to pull out of the bout due to injuries just days before the event and was replaced byMike Massenzio.[10] The Soszynski/Pokrajac bout was later rescheduled forUFC 140, where Pokrajac won by knockout.

On 17 May a torn muscle forcedMac Danzig out of his bout withDonald Cerrone.[11] Promotional newcomerVagner Rocha replaced Danzig.[12]

UFC newcomerDave Herman was originally slated to faceRob Broughton at this event, but Broughton was later replaced byJoey Beltran, who was later replaced withJohn Olav Einemo since Carwin replaced an injured Lesnar.[13]

UFC 131 featured two preliminary fights live onSpike TV,[14] and the remainder of the preliminary bouts streamed onFacebook[15] andYouTube.[16]
