Background

[edit]

The long expected bout betweenYoshihiro Akiyama andWanderlei Silva[4] did not take place at this event. Instead, Silva facedMichael Bisping.[5]

A bout betweenNate Marquardt andChael Sonnen which was expected to take place on this card was moved toUFC 109.[6] A bout betweenKeith Jardine andRich Franklin had been discussed,[7] but Jardine eventually fought the Ultimate Fighter 8 winnerRyan Bader.

Chris Lytle was expected to faceDong Hyun Kim,[8] but Kim was forced off the card with an injury.[9]Brian Foster stepped in to fight Lytle.

A bout betweenElvis Sinosic andChris Haseman was due to be the first ever all-Australian bout to take place in the UFC.[10] However, a shoulder injury forced Sinosic out of the fight on 18 February, and bout was pulled from the card as a result.[11]Additionally,Ben Rothwell was sidelined by an illness, leading to Australian veteranAnthony Perosh stepping in to faceMirko Cro Cop.[11]

Tickets for the event sold out on the first day they were available to the general public.[12] It was, at the time, the second fastest sellout of an event in the history of the UFC, behindUFC 83 (which was the first ever UFC event in Canada).[10] This record was later broken byUFC 127, the second event to be held in Australia. UFC 110 aired live on Australian free-to-air sports channelONE HD.[13]
