Tyler Jake Denton (born 6 September 1995) is an English professionalfootballer who plays as aleft-back forNational League clubScunthorpe United.

A formerEngland U17 international, he can also play as amidfielder. He turned professional atLeeds United in 2014 and joinedPort Vale onloan for the first half of the 2017–18 season. He joinedPeterborough United on loan for the 2018–19 season and was sold toStevenage in July 2019. From Stevenage, he moved toChesterfield in October 2020 andKing's Lynn Town in January 2021. He joined Scunthorpe United in July 2023 and was named in the 2023–24National League North Team of the Year. He helped the club to win promotion via the play-offs in 2025.

Club career

Leeds United

Denton started his career atLeeds United in 2003 and graduated through theacademy, turning professional in the summer of 2014,[4] before being appointed as the under-21captain for the2015–16 season.[5] Under newmanagerGarry Monk, Denton was called into Leeds first-team squad for theirfriendlies for the2016–17 pre-season and was givensquad number 33.[6] He made his first-team debut on 23 August, when he started at left-back in anEFL Cup fixture againstLuton Town; he scored the only goal of the game and was subsequently named in the competition's team of the second round.[7][8] Three days later he signed a new three-yearcontract.[9] On 9 January 2017, Denton made his next appearance for Leeds when he started in their 2–1FA Cup win atCambridge United.[10] He made his third appearance in the next round of the competition 20 days later, as Leeds were eliminated bynon-League sideSutton United.[11] He signed a new three-year contract in August 2017.[12]

Port Vale loan

On 7 August 2017, Denton joinedEFL League Two sidePort Vale onloan for the2017–18 season, with a recall clause option in January.[13] The loan was authorized by Leeds managerThomas Christiansen after he securedCameron Borthwick-Jackson on a season-long loan.[14] He was a first-team regular underMichael Brown, before losing his place in October under new managerNeil Aspin.[15] He was recalled toElland Road on 3 January 2018 due to family reasons.[16] Prior to joining Peterborough, Denton was subject of a loan offer from ItalianSerie B SideBrescia, owned by previous Leeds ownerMassimo Cellino.[17]

Peterborough loan

On 6 July 2018, Denton joinedLeague One sidePeterborough United on loan for the2018–19 season.[18] ManagerSteve Evans had briefly been Leeds manager shortly after Denton had turned professional.[19] His debut for the "Posh" came on 14 August, in a 2–0 defeat toEFL Championship sideQueens Park Rangers in theEFL Cup.[20] He made his first league appearance on 27 October, in a 2–1 win overBurton Albion.[21] The form ofColin Daniel andDaniel Lafferty meant that he was limited to 14 appearances during the2018–19 season and chairmanDarragh MacAnthony tweeted that "[he] needs to improve massively if to ever break into Leeds team".[22][23]

Stevenage

Denton joined League Two clubStevenage on 11 July 2019, signing for an undisclosed fee.[24] He missed the start of the season due to injury and was only able to feature in one game before managerDino Maamria was sacked and replaced byGraham Westley.[25] He played 19 games for "Boro" in the2019–20 season as the club wererelegated after finishing bottom of theEnglish Football League and was released by new managerAlex Revell in June 2020.[26]

Chesterfield

On 10 October 2020, Denton signed withNational League sideChesterfield after training with the "Spireties"; managerJohn Pemberton said he had "been recruited to help the balance of the team [as] we needed a left-sided player to share the workload".[27] However,James Rowe replaced Pemberton as manager the following month and Denton did not start a game under Rowe, who also signed left-backsJoel Taylor andAlex Whittle.[28]

King's Lynn Town

On 18 January 2021, Denton signed for fellow National League sideKing's Lynn Town after his release from Chesterfield.[29] He scored his first goal for the club on 27 February, in a 2–2 draw withWeymouth at The Walks.[30] He played 28 games for the "Linnets" in the second half of the2020–21 season, though admitted that the team were playing for little more than personal pride after relegation was cancelled due to the leagues below abandoning their seasons.[31][32] He played 28 games as King's Lynn were relegated at the end of the2021–22 season and had his contract extended by managerTommy Widdrington.[33][34] He made 37 appearances in the2022–23 campaign, including in the 4–1 defeat toKidderminster Harriers in the semi-finals of theNational League North play-offs.[31][35] Upon Denton's departure from the club, owner Stephen Cleeve said that the player's travel time from his home inYork was a factor in his decision to leave King's Lynn.[36]

Scunthorpe United

On 16 May 2023, he was announced as a player at newly relegated National League North clubScunthorpe United, with a contract to start on 1 July.[37] He played 44 of United's 46 league games in the2023–24 season, helping Scunthorpe to qualify for the play-offs with a second-place finish.[31] However, he did not feature in the semi-final defeat toBoston United atGlanford Park.[38] He was named in the National League North Team of the Year, alongside teammatesJacob Butterfield andDanny Whitehall.[39] He made 42 league appearances in the2024–25 season as Scunthrope again qualified for the play-offs.[31] He went on to start in the play-off final as promotion was secured with a 2–1 win overChester.[40]

International career

In 2011, Denton made his debut forEngland U17 against theFaroe Islands.[5]
