Tye Kayle Sheridan (born November 11, 1996) is an American actor.[3][4][5] He made his feature film debut inTerrence Malick's experimental drama filmThe Tree of Life (2011) and had his first leading role inJeff Nichols's filmMud (2012).

Sheridan gained wider recognition for playing a youngScott Summers / Cyclops in theX-Men film series (2016–2019) and for his starring role in the science fiction filmReady Player One (2018). His other film roles were in the dramasJoe (2013),The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015),The Card Counter,The Tender Bar (both 2021), andThe Order (2024).

Early life

Sheridan was born inPalestine, Texas.[2] His mother, Stephanie Sheridan owns a beauty salon, and his father, Bryan Sheridan, is a driver forUPS.[6][7] He has a younger sister, Madison. He was enrolled in theElkhart Independent School District until his film career became a priority focus when he was 16 years old, and he receivedtutoring on film sets.[citation needed]

Sheridan made his feature film debut in theTerrence Malick art filmThe Tree of Life (2011), withBrad Pitt,Jessica Chastain, andSean Penn, after an almost year-long casting search involving more than 10,000 children from Texas and Oklahoma.[3] The film premiered at the2011 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to be awarded thePalme d'Or[8] and nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Picture.[9][10]

In 2012, he played the leading role of Ellis inJeff Nichols'Mud oppositeJacob Lofland andMatthew McConaughey. Thecoming-of-agedrama-thriller film premiered at the2012 Cannes Film Festival[11] and Sheridan received aCritics' Choice Award nomination.[12]

Sheridan played Gary Jones in the filmJoe, which starsNicolas Cage playing an ex-con who meets a 15-year-old boy, the eldest child in a homeless family headed by an alcoholic father, and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin.[13] For his role he received theMarcello Mastroianni Award for best upcoming young actor at the70th Venice International Film Festival.[14]

In 2015, Sheridan starred in the three films that premiered at theSundance Film Festival. He co-starred oppositeGregg Turkington andMichael Cera in the dramaEntertainment, played a prisoner in the film adaptation ofThe Stanford Prison Experiment, and appeared inRodrigo Garcia's dramaLast Days in the Desert oppositeEwan McGregor, released May 2016.[15] That year, he also had a supporting role in the film adaptation ofGillian Flynn'sDark Places and the leading role in the horror comedyScouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.[citation needed] Sheridan played the mutantScott Summers/Cyclops in the filmX-Men: Apocalypse (2016), released on May 27, 2016.[16]

In 2017, Sheridan starred in the war dramaThe Yellow Birds (2017), oppositeAlden Ehrenreich,Jack Huston, andJennifer Aniston.[17] Also that year, Sheridan co-starred withKaitlyn Dever inGrass Stains, a film written and directed by Kyle Wilamowski.[18][19] In 2018, Sheridan played Wade Watts, a.k.a. Parzival, the lead character, inSteven Spielberg's science fiction blockbuster filmReady Player One.[20] He then reprised the role of Scott Summers/Cyclops in the 2019 filmDark Phoenix.[21]

In 2020, Sheridan starred alongsideAna de Armas,John Leguizamo andHelen Hunt inMichael Cristofer's crime drama filmThe Night Clerk, which was released on February 21, 2020, bySaban Films[22][23] and he was cast as the lead role in the survival thriller seriesWireless, which premiered on September 13, 2020, onQuibi.[24] In the same year, Sheridan took a voice role in the "Face of the Franchise" mode ofMadden NFL 21.[citation needed] Also the same year, he co-founded AI production tools companyWonder Dynamics with visual effects artist Nikola Todorovic.[25] Autodesk acquired the company in May 2024.[26]

In 2021, Sheridan co-starred in theNeil Burgersci-fi thrillerVoyagers (2021) withColin Farrell,Lily-Rose Depp,Isaac Hempstead Wright, andFionn Whitehead.[27][28] In the same year, Sheridan starred in the crime drama filmThe Card Counter[29] oppositeOscar Isaac,Tiffany Haddish andWillem Dafoe, which premiere at the78th Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2021, and was released on September 10, 2021, byFocus Features.[30][31] Also the same year, Sheridan co-starredBen Affleck,Lily Rabe andChristopher Lloyd in the coming-of-age movieThe Tender Bar directed byGeorge Clooney, in which he played the lead character named JR Maguire.[32]

In 2023, Sheridan starred alongsideSean Penn in the thriller drama filmAsphalt City, based on the 2008 novel, "Black Flies", byShannon Burke, which was released on May 18, 2023.[33][34] The film originally had the Black Flies name, but was changed prior to its US release.

In 2024, Sheridan joined the cast in the crime thriller filmThe Order directed byJustin Kurzel, based on the 1989 non-fiction bookThe Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, which premiered in competition on August 31, 2024 at the81st Venice International Film Festival.[35][36]
