Tvrtko Jakovina (born 2 March 1972) is aCroatian historian. Jakovina is a full time professor at the Department of History at theFaculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of theUniversity of Zagreb.[2][3]
Tvrtko Jakovina was born in the eastern Croatian town ofPožega where he finished elementary school andhigh school, and also completed his compulsory military service.[4]
He studied history at the University of Zagreb from 1991 to 1996. Jakovina was the founder and first honorary member of the Croatian branch ofInternational Students of History Association.[4] As an exchange student he attended courses atUniversity of Kansas,USIA andBoston College.[4] He completed his postgraduate studies atKatholieke Universiteit Leuven.[4] During the 2000/01 academic year, he was aFulbright Visiting Scholar atGeorgetown University inWashington D.C.[4] Since then, he has also attendedLondon School of Economics and Political Science and seminars on theHolocaust inIsrael.[4] He defended his PhD thesis at the University of Zagreb in 2002, receiving, after the publication, the annual prize for young scientists in the fields of history and humanities.[5]
Jakovina has presented many public lectures and attended many forums in Croatia and abroad.[6] He has co-authored a history textbook for senior high school students[4] and has authored hundreds of articles published in daily newspapers such asJutarnji list andVjesnik.[4] Due to his publicly expressed attitudes on the importance of objectivity in historical studies, he has often been attacked byCroatian radical right-wingers.[7] In his work, he is mostly interested in the history of the 20th century,American history, theCold War, theNon-Aligned Movement, and the policy ofdetente.[8][9] His books received state prizes in 2004 and 2014, while he also receivedKiklop book prize in 2013.[10] Jakovina is a coordinator of the postgraduate Diplomacy study program of the Faculty of Political Science and theMinistry of Foreign and European Affairs.[10]
Tvrtko Jakovina is a prominent public critic of the violent right-wingCroatian nationalism, historical revisionism ofWorld War II oriented towards unscientific positive reinterpretations of the Nazi puppet stateIndependent State of Croatia and absent or unscientific recognition ofUstaše genocide againstSerbs,Jews,Roma and other crimes against their opponents.[11][12][13]
Jakovina has signed the CIVICO Europa initiative againstautocratic policies in the fight againstCOVID-19 pandemic in Hungary.[14] The initiative was signed by 73 European personalities includingJean-Claude Juncker,Carl Bildt,Slavoj Žižek and from Croatia alongside Jakovina alsoMiljenko Jergović,Vesna Pusić,Seid Serdarević andŽeljko Trkanjec.[14]
