Tuna pot,marmitako inBasque Country andmarmita,marmite orsorropotún inCantabria is afishstew that was eaten ontuna fishing boats in theCantabrian Sea.[1] Today it is a simple dish with tuna,potatoes,onions,peppers, andtomatoes.

The originalFrench wordmarmite is a metal pot with lid. This French wordmarmite or theSpanish equivalentmarmita gives name to the dish in the East and Central Coast of Cantabria while theCantabrian wordsorropotún is used in the West Coast.Marmitako inBasque language means 'from the pot'.[citation needed]

History

Tuna pot was eaten by Basque fishermen during fishing season. As they stayed a long time at sea, the food used to go bad, so they ate thetuna they fished with cooked potatoes andchoricero peppers that kept well.
